What CD Are You Listening to ?

Had an exploratory spell recently, listening to stuff with potential reappraisal in mind. Dug out Prehistoric Sounds by The Saints. Still can't get on with this album at all. On the upside, the CD reissue tacks on a handful of blistering live tracks recorded in April 1977 at Paddington Town Hall. Radio Birdman on the same bill, according to the sleeve notes.

Some titles delivered more joy. Sleater-Kinney "The Woods", Spoon "Transference", The Cult "Dreamtime", Type O Negative "Dead Again". All of which are far better than I realized first time round.

I saw the Saints (and their off-shoots Laughing Clowns) quite a few times in Sydney but can't remember if I saw them at Paddo Town Hall. I remember going to see a few bands there with the crowd of skinheads going a bit beserk. At one stage they ripped a big Union Jack flag off the wall and proceeded to rip it up and make themselves bandannas, pretty funny. Unfortunately I can't remember who was playing, just the flag thing. Drugs and alcohol not good for the short term memory.
Saw a few bands across the road at Paddo RSL too, The Celibate Rifles, TISM, The Reels etc, not a bad venue.
Radio Birdman deserved a lot more recognition than they got in Aus, so much talent in their line-ups.
Ed Kuepper is doing the rounds at the moment, might be worth a look in.

Listened to Diorama -Silverchair for the first time in many years.

Absolutely hated it when it first came out but it's actually a pretty good listen.

Low Life, killer Sydney punk band. I think they really capture the essence of working class Australian culture.

Low Life - Rbb - A western Sydney anthem if there ever was one

Low Life - Warrior - “Joey Johns for tea, Eye-liner bleeds, A.V.O.’s to beat”, a punk song with a rugby league reference… what more could you want?

Low Life - Friends - Great song, and the icing on the cake is the sarcastic line during the outro: “Mario Falcon with the cutout pass, Sterlo scores in the corner, try tiiiime”. Once again, punk rock with a rugby league reference… great stuff

5th run @Vic Mackey

Ive had 2 so far. Hasnt grabbed me like the first 3. The 3 singles, Look to Windward and Even in Arcadia are my stand outs. Found a couple of real fillers imo. To me the first three albums all had mind blowing unique moments. Songs would take you on unexpected twists and turns like no one else. This one, I dont know, feels a bit more basic. Even the heavy riffs just feel like basic tune downs and then repeat for 3 mins.

I do feel this would be an incredibly hard album to make, TBMTE is potentially the album of a generation. Ive never seen a band explode like these guys have in the past 2 years, the expectation and pressure they would be under would be immense, plus signing with a major record label would have taken a bit of control away from them. Its not a bad record at all, if it wasnt Sleep Token and someone told me to listen to it id be like 'yeah this is cool,' but I expected a bit more. Maybe harsh on them as producing four elite albums in a row is basically un heard of.

Interested to see which songs from this come into their set list.

What are your thoughts?

I really like the album, they have def opened their arms to a wider audience. A bit more commercial than previous albums.

Deftones are my fav band, and honestly, for eclectic music tastes, I love these guys. They are carrying on from Deftones. There is inspo from DnB here, lofi, and electronic. I accept them for what they are. Enjoyable album, start to finish.

It feels like what post metal should sound like.

Look to Windward 8/10
Emergence 7.5/10
Past Self 8/10
Dangerous 6/10
Even in Arcadia 9/10
(I love this the most)
Provider 7/10
Damocles 5/10
Gethsemane 7.5/10
Infinite Baths 7/10
Caramel 7/10

Have you heard the rumours that theyre going to release another 10 song album later this year? Would make sense to me. Even in Arcadia will be confirmed as number 1 tomorrow which is absolutely incredible for a band who 2 and a half years ago had 250k listeners on spotify and was playing gigs at 500 max capacity venues.

I love Deftones too, have you checked out Loathe? Theyre the closet Ive come to a modern Deftones. Their 2020 album 'I let it in and it took everything' is amazing.

Lesser known but this Canadian Band Never Easy is straight from the Deftones play book
