Van Halen is an American rock band formed in the early 1970s. The band's first studio album, Van Halen, released in 1978 is widely regarded as a milestone in rock music. With this first release, the band established itself as a leader in the emerging and commercially successful U.S. hard rock and heavy metal genres of the 1980s. In particular, the band's guitarist, Eddie Van Halen, quickly gained widespread fame for his technical prowess and musical sensibility. Almost overnight, he was touted as one of the most innovative and influential American rock and roll guitarists[1].
From 1978 to 1998 the band released 11 studio albums (all of which broke the Top 20 spot of the Billboard 200 music charts[2]). The band has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide[3] and has received several Grammy nominations[4]. Van Halen is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records with the most number one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock List[5]. According to the Recording Industry Association of America Van Halen is #19 on the list of Top Selling Artists of all time (having sold more than 56 million albums in the U.S.)[6]. Van Halen is one of six rock groups that have had 2 albums sell more than 10 million copies in the U.S. (the others being: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Def Leppard, The Eagles and U2).
In addition to being recognized for their artistic contributions, commercial success and popularity, the band is known for drama surrounding the lead singer spot. Although the core instrumentalists and backing vocals have remained constant (Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony), the band has recorded studio albums with three different lead vocalists: David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone. Each vocalist has departed (at least once) under cloudy circumstances. Following their 2004 concert tour the band is currently on hiatus; once again they have a vacancy in the lead singer position and an uncertain future. :(

 Found these guys, I use to love them in my early 20's

Stryper is a Christian metal band from Orange County, California, USA. Formed in 1983, they are considered pioneers in the mainstream popularization of Christian rock music. Stryper enjoyed great success during the late 1980s before breaking up in the early 1990s, but the band reunited in 2003 and are attempting a comeback in the Christian music world.
The name "Stryper" derives from a Bible verse, Isaiah 53:5:
"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."(1)
The scriptural reference is also part of Stryper's logo on most of their releases. In addition, the band's name has been said to stand for:
"Salvation Through Redemption, Yielding Peace, Encouragement, and Righteousness."

SLOAN

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloan_(band)

Sloan is a power pop quartet from Halifax, Nova Scotia. The band was formed in 1991 when Chris Murphy and Andrew Scott met at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in Halifax; Patrick Pentland and Jay Ferguson joined soon after. In 1992 the band created their own record label, Murderecords, for themselves and other Halifax area bands, and released the Peppermint EP. Later in 1992 they released their full-length album Smeared on Geffen Records.

TEENAGE FANCLUB

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Fanclub

Teenage Fanclub are revered by power-pop fans for their devotion to chiming, Byrds-esque guitars and harmony vocals. They are also known affectionately as "The Fannies" and "The Bellshill Beach Boys"

Songwriting duties are shared between the three permanent members of the group:

Norman Blake,
Raymond McGinley, and
Gerard Love.

In concert, they usually alternate between the three songwriters (whom all sing lead vocals on their own songs). Despite the prevalence of harmonies on the album versions of songs, only Blake sings harmony in concert.

There have been a succession of drummers, including:

Francis MacDonald (a prime-mover in the C86 scene, later of the BMX Bandits), the drummer in the original lineup, and in a later period
Brendan O’Hare (later of the Telstar Ponies and Mogwai), and
Paul Quinn, who was later replaced by the returning Francis MacDonald.
Keyboardist Finlay MacDonald (no relation to Francis MacDonald) has also been a member.

GUIDED BY VOICES

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guided_By_Voices

Guided by Voices (often abbreviated as GBV) was an extremely prolific lo-fi/indie-rock band from Dayton, Ohio. As an integral part of the American independent rock scene from 1986 until 2004, they turned out a number of albums which showcased their propensity for short, catchy indie tunes.

Over the years the band saw many personnel changes, but always maintained the presence of principal singer/songwriter Robert Pollard, a former schoolteacher. Pollard was an avid rock fan, and Guided by Voices' work always reflected his steadfast devotion to the Beatles, post-British Invasion garage rock, psychedelic, prog-rock, as well as punk and post-punk.

Guided by Voices also garnered much attention for its prolificacy, with a seemingly endless stream of releases. Most songs are in the two-minute range, but many are even shorter; often they end abruptly or are intertwined with odd and homemade sound effects. While Guided by Voices progressed over time from an aspiring bar band, to willfully scuzzy basement obscurantists, to a relatively professional riff-pop machine in the latter half of the 90s, the constants throughout were Pollard's seemingly instinctual grasp of the pop form, his digestion of reams of rock history, and his gift for melodic invention.

That is very impressive, and to be in such company as Floyd and Zep to sell more then 10 million albums twice is amazing.

Ratt is an American glam metal band that enjoyed significant commercial success during the 1980s. The band is most notable for their 1984 smash hit single, "Round and Round." They have developed a sizable cult following in recent years and have acquired respect from within the music industry as talented musicians, pop-savvy songwriters, and intrepid pioneers of the Southern California music scene.

The band has sold an estimated 10 million records in the U.S. while worldwide album sales are approximated at over 18 million.[1] A further sign of their success (and recent acceptance as legends within their field) was when VH1 recognized them as #79 on their 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.[1]

Ratt's music was influenced by 1970s hard rock and glam rock bands such as Aerosmith, Sweet, Led Zeppelin and KISS. They fused this with heavy metal influences from the likes of Van Halen and Judas Priest.

Though they later incoporated more of a blues sound into their music, the band was one of the first glam metal style groups that appeared in the early 1980s in California.

Their image bore similarities to that of Aerosmith and the New York Dolls.

Led Zeppelin were an English rock band consisting of Jimmy Page (guitar), Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica), John Bonham (drums), and John Paul Jones (bass guitar, mandolin and keyboards).

Formed in 1968, Led Zeppelin were consistent innovators who never lost mainstream appeal. While the band is best known as a pioneering force in hard rock and heavy metal, they also included elements of blues, rockabilly, bluegrass, reggae, soul, funk, Celtic, Indian, Arabic, folk, pop, and flamenco in their music.

Over 25 years after deciding to disband in response to drummer John Bonham's death in 1980, Led Zeppelin continue to be held in high regard for their artistic achievements, commercial success and influential role in the history of 20th Century popular music. The BBC has described them as "one of the most influential bands of the rock era."[1] As of 2006, the group has sold more than 300 million albums worldwide,[2] including 109.5 million in the United States.[3

Pixies (frequently referred to as The Pixies) are an American alternative rock music group formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1986.[1] The group disbanded in 1993 but reunited in 2004. Black Francis a.k.a. Frank Black (vocals, rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal a.k.a Mrs John Murphy (bass guitar, vocals), and David Lovering (drums) have been the group's continual members. Pixies found only modest success in their home country, but were significantly more successful in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe.

The group is frequently posited as the immediate forbearer of the alternative rock boom of the early 1990s, though they disbanded before reaping any of the benefits this might have brought them. Avowed fan Kurt Cobain's acknowledgement of the debt Nirvana owed to the Pixies, along with similar tributes by other alternative bands, ensured that the Pixies' legacy grew substantially in the years following their demise.

I prefer UnCyclopedia; here's an example:

Nirvana

Nirvana is a hugely successful Pixies tribute band (of the genre of polka) lead by singer/songwriter Kurt Cobain, who famously attempted suicide the early 1990s by marrying Courtney Love. Following the failed suicide attempt, the group bounced back with a string of successful singles in addition to providing the theme song for the hit NBC sitcom 2 And A Half Men.

The group continues to tour, record and produce commercial jingles. Most recently, they appeared on Saturday Night Live mocking their previously anti-mainstream demeanor, though the broadcast had to be cut short when all three members attempted to rape Chris Farley.

Nirvana performed under various monickers before settling on Marcy Playground, and later Nirvana. Past names include The Melvins, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, and briefly "Cheap Trick being molested by Black Sabbath while The Jam watches and fingers members of The Velvet Underground while he watches Jefferson Airplane have an oral sex orgy with the Grateful Dead".

While critics dismissed the band's early efforts as "kind of boring. Turn it off.", opinion shifted when the band hired an actual producer. While the sound remained boring, it was now louder and on the radio, prompting critics to declare Kurt Cobain the James Earl Jones of his Generation.

In 1995, lead drummer Stanley Kubrick left to persue a career writing Frank Black songs. Sometimes he would occasionally write a Kim Deal song.

Necro

Ron Braunstein (born 1976) known better by his stage name, Necro, is an indie death rap, hardcore hip hop rapper from Brooklyn, New York known in the hip hop community for his exceptionally explicit lyrics. His music is often labeled as part of the horrorcore genre of hip hop. Necro, however, has stated that he doesn't consider his music as part of this genre. He has even claimed to have invented the term "death rap" to further distance himself from being associated with horrorcore music.[1] He is also the brother of rapper Ill Bill.

Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath is an English Heavy metal band, who were pioneers of Heavy Metal. The band was originally comprised of Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Terence "Geezer" Butler (bass), and Bill Ward (drums).

One of the definitive heavy metal bands, Black Sabbath remains a dominant influence in the genre they helped originate.[1] VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock ranked them second, behind Led Zeppelin. [2]

Wu-Tang Clan

Wu-Tang Clan is an American hip hop group from Staten Island, New York City.

The group was originally composed of nine MCs until the Wu-Tang recruited Cappadonna and the number of clansmen went up to ten. Cappadonna made his debut in 1995 on Only Built for Cuban Linx and became officialized as a Wu-Tang member in 1998. However the number of members reduced to nine with the death of co-founder Ol' Dirty Bastard in 2004. In 1993 the group released its debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Since then, all nine members (Cappadonna wasn't a member at the time) have released solo albums, and the group has spawned many affiliate artists. This was leader RZA's plan from the beginning: to become an empire in the rap industry by saturation of affiliated artists.

Though their style has evolved considerably over the years, the group is fundamentally known for The RZA's pioneering, gritty sample-based production and unique emceeing distinguished by heavy use of local slang and Five Percenter terminology, themes of inner-city life, and references to Hong Kong action cinema and Samurai films.

Rammstein

Rammstein is a German band that was formed in 1994. The musical style, which they call Tanz-Metall ("Dance metal")[citation needed], incorporates elements of metal, industrial rock and electronic music, and are considered in their native country to be part of the NDH-movement[citation needed]. Their songs are performed almost exclusively in German. They have sold over 10 million records worldwide

Robbin Crosby (August 4, 1959 – June 6, 2002), born Robbinson Lantz Crosby and nicknamed "The King" was the former lead guitarist in the glam metal band Ratt, who had several platinum albums in the U.S. in the mid to late 1980s.

Robbin Crosby's guitar playing was largely influenced by guitar hero Jimi Hendrix. Ironically, many have Crosby side by side with Hendrix atop their list of all-time greatest rock guitarists. He joined Ratt in 1982 as the co-lead guitarist alongside noted shredder Warren DeMartini.

The hulking blond guitarist was quite a sight on stage with his Jackson King V guitars, the style he preferred. He would also put a red rose on the end of his guitar because, "I thought the chicks would dig it". He requested six red roses on the item list of the tour rider.

He joined Ratt in 1982 and made a major songwriting contribution to the band, penning many of Ratt's hits including "Round and Round", "I'm Insane", "Back for More" and "Lay it Down". However co-lead guitarist Warren DeMartini played more lead guitar in the band and wrote and recorded most of the guitar solos and riffs which eventually made Ratt one the biggest rock acts in the mid-1980's and it launched Robbin into depression and then started his drug addiction in order to deal with that depression.

Eventually he bought a nice house in the Los Angeles area in which he proudly displayed his platnum albums, he bought a few cars including a 1979 Ferrari Dino. He dated Tawny Kitaen and Apollonia Kotero and eventually married Playboy Playmate Laurie Carr in 1987. They had no children. He had a reputation for the "rock and roll lifestyle" during Ratt's heyday, and he was a habitual heroin user for some time, allegedly it was Nikki Sixx who introduced him to the drug in Ratt's earlier days.

Interviewers in the 80's almost always mentioned that Robbin was a sweet person and a true gentleman who gave thoughful interviews. Things rarely mentioned about his peers in the business. There's footage on Ratt:The Video that shows the rest of the members running through crowds to the limo giving a wave on the way but Robbin would take the time to shake his fans hands, sign autographs and accept gifts which showed that he truly loved his fans.

In 2001, Robbin Crosby publicly admitted that he had full-blown AIDS. He had been in and out of the hospital for eight years dealing with back problems and health issues associated with the virus. He was also drinking heavily to deal with the pain. He probably contracted HIV sometime in the late 1980s through a tainted needle while taking heroin, which was confirmed in the summer of 1994.

Crosby died in Los Angeles on June 6, 2002, two months prior to his 43rd birthday. Most credible reports state that he died of a heart attack brought on by AIDS complications. At the time of his death Crosby had also changed physically, due to a pancreatic condition that changed his metabolism, the once handsome blonde guitarist had gained quite a bit of weight since his '80s glam heyday. He was quoted as saying in an interview just before his death:

"Apparently my pancreas has given up and I'm not metabolizing food the way I should. It's real frustrating.... I have a roommate that probably weighs 150 lbs. and he eats a lot more than I do. It's not like I'm a pig or a slob."

According to an autopsy report after his death, Crosby weighed over 400 pounds.[1]

Robbin's remains were cremated.

Disturbed

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disturbed
Disturbed is a band from Chicago, Illinois. It was formed in 1996 when musicians Dan Donegan, Steve "Fuzz" Kmak, and Mike Wengren hired singer David Draiman in Chicago, Illinois. Although generally regarded as part of the nu-metal genre by the industry, some fans and the band alike are of the opinion that Disturbed is actually a hard rock band.

In its early years, Disturbed recorded two separate demo EPs which it then sent out to different record companies. The band sent two to show the record companies that it was dedicated to its music and that the first EP wasn't a fluke. The band broke out in 1999 with its single "Stupify" and subsequent album The Sickness. The album launched the band into stardom. It also released a completely revamped cover version of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin's theme music for the WWE, called "Glass Shatters." After participating in Ozzy Osbourne's Ozzfest tour in 2001, the band started the Music as a Weapon Tour.

Fuzz founded Disturbed in 1997 with guitarist Dan Donegan and Mike Wengren. He left the band in early 2003; as singer David Draiman puts it "when Kmak was in the band, Disturbed wasn't totally clicking — personally or musically". The band tells fans that he left for personal reasons. He was replaced with John Moyer.

In September 2002, Disturbed's second album Believe debuted at #1, and in 2003, the band participated again in the Ozzfest tour.
The group recently toured with 10 Years and Ill Niño in support of its third album Ten Thousand Fists, released worldwide on September 20th, 2005. It debuted at #1 in the U.S. In addition to Ten Thousand Fists the band has released the tracks Hell and Monster, although Monster is currently unavailable to the public because the iTunes offer it came with expired. Hell is currently streamed on the band's MySpace website. Both of these songs are in high demand and illustrate the band's extremely loyal fan base. In the future, the band is considering creating a "B-side" compilation including those two tracks as well as others. There was a Europe tour scheduled which has been moved twice due to David Draiman having troubles with his voice.
"I had been taking Prevacid for about four years and my body built up a resistance to it, to the point where it wasn't doing anything anymore," he told MTV.com. "I had a night of drinking in London followed by a full day and night of drinking on a day off in Dublin, because what else is there to do in Ireland but drink? That, coupled with a show where I had monitor problems, and I pretty much trashed my voice." - David Draiman Now he is off alcohol and has to watch what he eats.
Disturbed is also scheduled to headline the Jägermeister tour in November 2005 and will headline "Music as a Weapon III" in 2006. It supplied the song "Stricken" for WWE New Years Revolution 2006.
The band's singer recently became embroiled in the music filesharing controversy by publicly speaking out against the RIAA's lawsuits against filesharing individuals, despite the fact his record label is a member of the RIAA.
"This is not rocket science. Instead of spending all this money litigating against kids who are the people they're trying to sell things to in the first place, they have to learn how to effectively use the Internet. For the artists, my ass... I didn't ask them to protect me, and I don't want their protection." - David Draiman On January 7 2006, Draiman said, on a radio show in Seattle, that it "looks" like Disturbed would be on this year's Ozzfest. However, he later said in an interview on January 30 2006 that he never said anything like that to anyone, contradicting his previous statement. Draiman's conflicting statements led to an uproar of criticism from a few fans on Disturbed's official messageboard. This resulted in the shut down of the online community by the band and their management. Although no official statement from the band or management has been made, it is reported by such sources as Blabbermouth.net that Draiman feels that the online community, which had grown to 8,000 has become a source of frustration for the band due to ongoing criticism and quarreling.

After all of this controversy, Disturbed was confirmed as an Ozzfest 2006 band, and headlined on the main stage along with System of a Down. They have also recently completed an Australasian tour supporting Korn and sharing the tour with 10 Years and Hatebreed.

Dream Theater
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_Theater

Dream Theater is a progressive metal band, formed by three students at the Berklee College of Music in 1985. In the twenty years since their inception, they have become one of the most commercially successful progressive bands since the height of progressive rock in the mid-1970s, despite being relatively unknown in mainstream pop and mainstream rock circles. Their two highest selling albums are 1992's Images and Words, which was awarded a gold record and is consistently regarded as a seminal progressive metal release, although it only reached #61 on the Billboard 200 charts; and 2005's Octavarium, which reached #36 on the Billboard 200.

The band is well-known for the technical proficiency of each instrumentalist, winning many awards from music magazines. They are highly respected by many of rock and metal's biggest names, leading to collaborations between Dream Theater members and many other well known musicians. In a famous example, guitarist John Petrucci was named as the third player on the G3 tour with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, following in the foot steps of Eric Johnson, Robert Fripp, Yngwie Malmsteen and other influential guitarists.

Dream Theater is also noted for their musical versatility and the many different genres their own music incorporates, which has made it possible for them to perform with a very diverse range of acts. Some of their more notable touring partners include Deep Purple, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Iron Maiden, Joe Satriani, King's X, Marillion, Megadeth, In Flames, Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, Queensrÿche, Spock's Beard, Fear Factory, Enchant, Symphony X, and Yes. In 2005, Dream Theater toured North America with the Gigantour festival, co-headlining with Megadeth.
