Penalty and Drop Goals in Eels-Tigers Trial

A healthy crowd of just over 8,000 turned up to Campbelltown Stadium to watch the Wests Tigers and Parramatta do battle in what was only a trial match with the Eels winning 9-8 in a very ordinary game of football.
Both sides scored one try each in the first half with the scores locked up at 6-all. Adam Dykes was first to score early in the match but Wests followed that up with John Wilson backing up a fine break to race 30m to score.
The second half was a tragedy of errors and probably taken a tad too seriously for a token trial with John Morris landing a drop-goal and the match ending in two penalty goals, first to Wests fullback Brett Hodgson and than Parramatta's Luke Burt.
New Tigers signing Ben Reynolds dropped the kick-off after Hodgson's penalty goal and threw the ball into the back of Corey Pearson, which resulted in a Parramatta penalty where Burt gave the Eels victory.
Parramatta targeted Hodgson all night with kicks and cheap shots but Hodgson kept on bouncing back and was the best player on the field.
The match was only a trial but watching from in the stands, the Eels looked like they were taking the victory with the same excitement as a semi-final. Apparently both teams played for some trophy and it is a title that can go alongside Brian Smith's impressive list of pre-season coaching achievements.
