There are various rants going on about this in a few other threads but I want to create a thread to illustrate the clusterf**k that the Big Bash Wankathon is going to cause for Australian cricket.

The fact that we have literally no first class cricket untill after the last test match of the summer is over is terrible. That led me to thinking of ways we could extend the season.

Three round shield to take it to a 15 round season?

Add ACT and NT for a 14 rounds season?

Merge the Sheffield and Plunkett Shields to create a 12 team, 22 or 16 round season?

Then I realized. We can't. We can't do any of these things. There is literally NO way we can fix the first class cricket vacuum we've created.

And it's because of the Big Bash League.

CA's deal with the clubs, the players, the franchisees and - most importantly - the broadcaster mean we are stuck with this abortion of a competition for a minimum of 5 years. They are REQUIRED to play it over the December/January window because it's when most people are on holidays and therefore watching and attending cricket. It's what the broadcasters wanted to garuntee the highest ratings.

Change the format? How. This ridiculous competition has to be played in one giant block due to the seperate teams from the shield sides. If we'd kept the old competition, we could have just played the T20 stuff on weekends and played Shield matches midweek. But there is no way possible for that to happen now.

What have we done? We've doomed Australian cricket to being even more mediocre than it currently is. And in case you missed it, that's pretty f**king mediocre.

I've always thought you should play teams 3 times. Set it so you reverse the fixture the season after the teams you played at home twice you play away twice next year. It'll never happen but there isn't enough Shield cricket for these guys to play.

The days of going back to the shield and making runs to come back are over. The Shield season is usually halfway over when the test summer begins and those in the test team are probably on your somewhere. When the shield resumes some if the players are playing the one day series.

ODI and T20i are the future gateway to the test team. Marsh is only there because he does alright in the one dayers. Ferguson is only in contention for the same reason.

Cricket will eventually die out here and the big wank off will have sealed the fate

I was thinking the same thing but then I saw the highlight of Simpsons innings, the guy who just made 150 on debut for NSW and he's only 18.

You could see he'd played a bit of limited over cricket.

Eye like a dead fish but no footwork to speak of.

If we bring these kids through the big beat off, they are gonna have techniques like Phil Hughes when they get to the test arena and then have to change it to suit test cricket.

We need to keep our good juniors away from this bastardisation of a game, not encourage them to play it, imo.

T20 itself is not the problem. It is enjoyable for what it is.

The promotion of T20 above and beyond the other forms cricket is the major problem.

Splitting up the season like this is just ridiculous.

T20 is good fun and not going anywhere. But I don't care how much extra money CA got for scheduling it in Dec/Jan, it was ludicrous.

It should have been either the opening of the season in Oct/Nov or the end of it in April. Not in the bloody middle.

As well as that 50 over cricket needs to be taken out the back and put out of its misery. T20 to satisfy the 21st century ADD types. Test cricket to be the ultimate test in the game, there is no need for an inbetween. It's brand saturation and just makes players exhausted.

Have the T20 stuff we have now (just schedule the domestic tournament better). Have more first class cricket and minimum 3 test series. Every top country should 4 three test series in a calender year (except for the Ashes), 2 at home, 2 away. More warm up tour games.

To sum it up:
1) Let sanity prevail and move the big bash when the contract ends
2) Kill 50 over cricket, more 1st class cricket and focus on T20 and Tests internationally.
3) No more 2 test series.

T20 is a good gateway to the game and a money earner. But it can't ever come at the expense of hurting Test cricket.

I know a bloke whose sons are young (still in primary school), at first they didnt pay much attention to cricket but they got drawn to it by the excitement of T20. That was their first taste of the great game, now they're parked infront of the tv all day watching Test cricket when they're not in school.

T20 if handled well can help the sport flourish, if handled poorly it could become a cancer on the game. Growing at the expense of the main organism.

The issue is it's a 31 game season played over 6 weeks. The county season has a month in the middle of T20 but they play alot more games in that time. We could easily have it if we simply played it over a shorter time period, works better that way as well (rather than dragging out).

The most ridiculous thing is that there is a week between the semi finals and the final, why? Absolute joke.

The poms manage to fit in 16 first class matches, a big T20 comp and a one day comp in their season yet over a similar time we have 6 weeks off first class cricket. Joke. You drop players and they have no where to find form, injured players have no where to come back through (eg Cutting) etc.

Have it start on Boxing Day, have the final around the end of the Sydney test (2 weeks). Minimises the interruptions to the domestic season and it still captures the holiday period when a lot of people are off work / school. Not every team has to play each other once, have two pools and the top team from each pool plays in the final. A maximum of 4 matches over a 14 day period. It's possible, it's not as though you're going to get burnout.
