I'm just trying to gauge how shit my internet truly is. I'm current with Exetel ADSL2 and the download speeds are god awful.

My line speed averages around 3.5mps which is f**king awful.

You can test your line speed here

Are rural internet speeds usually a lot worse then metro? What provider are you with?

westnet but it all runs through Telstra lines anyway.

im not sure about rural vs metro but I would have to imagine Sydney siders have access to faster internet, I may be wrong.

Isnt it relative to how far away from the 'exchange' you are?

Line speed has very little to do with your provider, its a function of the quality of the phone lines between your house and the exchange and your proximity to the exchange. In other words it's almost entirely under Telstras control, and changing ISP will probably make very little difference. In the last 5 6 years I've had the following approximate speeds at various places I've lived:

12MBit (Exetel, St Leonards exchange)
4MBit (Internode, Petersham exchange)
16 MBit (TPG, Richmond exchange)
13Mbit (iiNet, Redfern exchange, about 1km)

in every case there was a pretty obvious correlation between line speed and download performance and both the distance to the exchange and the genral state of the lines/wiring on the property. Ie if you live in a a street of old houses several (4+) km from the exchange, your speed will probably be rubbish.

You can use this link to check your proximity to your exchange: http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/

It comes down a lot to how far your are from the exchange. Further away you are the worse the speeds will be. Also the copper quality as well.

Difference in speed between providers only really become apparent if you have a good line as the speeds your get can then start to stress their switch gear. if you're only getting 3-4MBit then it really isn;t gonna matter who you're with, it's all gonna be pretty rubbish, might as well use whoever's cheap.

Is there anyway to check the quality of your exchange?

Sorry forgot to paste the link before:

http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/

Thats will tell you your approximate distance from your exchange. "Quality of your exchange" is meaningless, they're either ADSL1 or ADSL2, (mostly the latter), there isn;t really a quality issue with the exchanges themselves. Distancde plays a major factor. If you are close but your speeds are still terrible, you can assume that the quality of the copper between you and the exchange is poor.

It says 2000 meters exaxtly. Would going from ADSL2 to NBN do much?

Yes. Completely different infrastructure. If you're getting crap adsl speeds at 2km then your copper is probàbly in poor shape. If that's the case and NBN is available it'll be fibre to the home which should give you close to the advertised NBN plan speeds.

Thanks for your help, might look into it.

Looks like there is no nbn in my area and no plans so far to rollout it in my area. Looks like I'm stuck with with crappy line speeds because of my area for probably many years to come.
