I observed a debate about whether a cook or farmer was more useful or harder, and it got me think about useless jobs.

For me I cannot go past musicians, useless twats that they are. I would rather watch a mime.

There are many jobs I am glad I do not do, but see the purpose of them.

So what do you consider the most useless job in society?

I don't know why you'd single out musicians, they offer no more of less than anyone in the arts to society.

I'd consider the most useless job is probably bank teller. There is literally nothing that they do that you can't do yourself, and for the most part dealing with them is slower and more difficult than doing it over the phone or online. Within 5-10 years they in all likelihood wont even exist as an occupation.

Meh Danish, art? It is not an art any moron can hit a drum.

Pretty sure mimes, do not prey on the young for money like the evil worthless musicians do.

As a bloke who shaves his own head twice a year and looks like jesus just before, I see this this point.

My wife once got a $400 hair cut, colour etc, she was very unhappy, cried felt guilty, I went off, but I was going off that they could charge that, not her, of course she did not see that.

Could have been worse, she could have paid for music.

Damn straight I won't be.

Your not a musician you have a quality job, engineer.

As a hobby you play an instrument, but it is not your job, and it should not be anyones.

at least musicians create something from nothing. if you're gonna have a stab at the arts for being useless, actors and actresses are far more useless in the grand scheme of things than musicians... based purely on the fact that they don't even create something, they just regurgitate others work in a (sometimes) convincing manner. we can already replace singers and other musicians with a virtual alternative. we have the technology to synthesize legitimate voices and primitive holographic technology, and it can be done very successfully. we no longer need the people to play the music, to "act" on screen. we DO still need creators to create things for these virtual "beings" to do.

the creators in this world will at least have a place until technology/the arts/whatever can advance and propagate themselves without our intervention. the rest can, and probably will eventually be replaced.

Parking attendant/toll operator. They do nothing a machine can't do faster.

I've had a pretty useless job in the past - over summer, while I was at uni. I was hired on a short term contract during the summer holidays by a steel factory to, wait for it, take dogspikes out of wooden crates and re-pack them into hession bags. Dogspikes are the big steel nails they use to hold railway tracks in place.

Why? This particular firm had been given the contract to supply loads of dogspikes for railway construction in country NSW, in the intersts of promoting Australian manufacturing. But they'd figured out they could make more money if they just imported the things. So they paid me to take the dogspikes out of the crates, with the Chinese manufacturers logo on it, and stick them in the hessian sacks, with the Australian company's logo on it.

I disagree about musicians by the way. If people are prepared to pay money for the service they provide, then they aren't useless.

Human Rights lawyers on the other hand... Or 'Climate Change Consultants'...

You shouldn't lump all musicians together. If I couldn't listen to the Beatles or the Dubliners, well, I'd be more insane than I already am. Songwriters definitely add to society.
And actors are far more useless than musicians. Anyone can act, especially if they have a ton of second chances to get it right like pro actors do. I don't see how it's an art. And artists don't add much to society either, splashes of paint on paper that 99% of the population see it as a splash of paint on paper, but for 1% of the population it's a representation of the socio-sexual values of the economic themes that underline society... And is worth a couple of million dollars.

But the no. 1 useless job for me, the uni professor/critic who claims to be an expert in his field (not all of them). For example, the creative writing teacher/book critic who can't get a book published themselves. They're probably not useless, I just can't see why they're here...
