My wife and I spent half an hour explaining Ashes and Kangaroo tours to my older son the other night. Before big contracts, 5 star hotels and nutritionalists and resting. Pre 1995 and professionalism in Australian sport.
Of sitting up to watch Wimbledon or test matches and not qualifying for soccer world cups.

I remember sitting up watching the Kangaroo tour matches. Also with Wimbledon sitting up watching Evonne Goolagong/ Cawley matches in the 70s and especially the 1980 final against Chris Evert, also remember sitting up to watch Wendy Turnbull play in the quarters in 1981 against Hana Mandlikova and Wendy was a good chance of beating Hana but Hana came out and wiped her 6-0 6-0.

Speaking of tennis to go to White City and being able to watch Martina Navratilova, Wendy Turnbull, Pam Shriver, Hana Mandilkova play regularly but also seeing Billie Jean King, Betty Stove, Rosie Casals and Dianne Fromholtz/ Ballestrat at least once also but the biggie was one day, it was in 1982 finally got to see Evonne Goolagong/ Cawley play live for the first time ever, it was so funny to as she was playing Chris O Neil so it was the last two Australian women who had won the Australian Open playing each other, even though it was right at the end of Evonne's career it was still like watching poetry in motion the way she moved around the court, an absolute highlight for me.

Mate a “great list” there…. I remember Lukin n Vinnicombe…the “two Germany’s”, also the USSR.. Yugoslavia…

I was actually thinking of many Aussie names of the past the other day, big names in my childhood but where are they now…

Athletes like…

Jon Sieben
Deek
Steve Moneghetti
Tracy Wickham
Debbie Flintoff-King

I'm adding Shane Gould and Raelene Boyle to that list.

Shane Gould amazing swims against the East German drug machine of 1972.
Then Raelene being denied Gold because of the East German drug machine, she should have won Gold in 1972 to add to her silver from 1968, then heart breakingly she was disqualified in 1976 for false starting and her chance of Gold was gone forever :(

I remember reading a story about those East German athletes of that era…

It was systematic doping for most of them at a young age, they did what they were instructed to - they didn’t know any different nor would have dared speak out even if they knew it was illegal…

the sad part is that many of them have since suffered horrific medical issues. I recall the woman who beat Boyle…. Her muscular system was shot to bits, and she could hardly stand up, or lift more than a cup of coffee. Amongst a raft of other health issues.

That was about 15 years ago. Who knows what she (and the others) are like now, if alive at all..

Yes it is sad because the athletes had no say in it , they were doped up at a young age and wouldn't have known what was being done to them was wrong at the time and now all the horrible side effects they are suffering if they haven't passed away already. I still really feel for Raelene Boyle though because she did deserve Gold and just glad Shane Gould had the natural talent and was able to beat the East Germans in two of her swims for Gold.

Realising some of my fave albums and movies are all lining up for 30 or 40 birthdays this year (or in next couple of years).
Yes, considering my IPOD is so top heavy with 70's and 80's.

My favourite albums A New World Record- ELO ( 1976 ) and Super Trouper -ABBA ( 1980 ) are 45 and 41 years old .

The Towering Inferno (1974 ) 47 years old.

I feel old hearing Dieter Brummer has passed away. Home and Away 1989-94ish were my teen years. Then I hear he’s my age, 45, and think poor bastard. RIP.

I miss Red Rattlers, 1c lollies, newsagents full of magazines, comics and 4-5 Sydney newspapers. I miss the drive in from my primary school years. Betamax and VHS rental shops. Bubblegum cards of footy cricket and movies. Myna cordial. Chickadees. Bigfoot Pizza Hut. Pizza Hit restaurants.

Geez it was hard to find a pic of Mynor cordials but this Cottees one had the GI cordial in it.

Shame was so good, she used to train against guys, I’ve met one.

He thinks the world of her.

One of the casuals at work who was my manager once years ago in another shop, he was talking about Fox showing highlights of when Kevin Walters and Alfie Langer playing and i mentioned to him how you tube have had lots of older games put up now and seeing he was a Souths supporter i mentioned a game that was on there between Easts and Souths at the Sports Ground in 1982 which i remember being at and when i watched it again it was exactly how i remembered it being live, he said to me that was the year he was born, i seem to forget there is about a 20 year age gap between him and me even though he has seemed to be around the company for years.

I remember going to Kogarah Jubilee as a teenager for a Raiders Dragons game in the early 90's. I got their early - coz "those were the days" were you had all three grades. It was also the days when the opposition (especially those from out of town) would all arrive around the same time - thus the First Grade team got to Kogarah well before 3pm kickoff - and would sit in the stands to watch the under 23's go around, reserves etc.

I remember seeing the Raiders in person for the first time. Meninga looked like a colossus, then i saw Lazarus... This was their golden era and they were all rock stars but still - they were happy sitting in with the general public and shaking hands, signing autographs etc - for those who could step out of gawking at them and go up to say hello. Then I saw Ricky Stuart walking past me around the concourse - he'd gone to get an ice cream from the kiosk. Even he looked enormous, and strong as an ox.

Now I'm feeling old for a few reasons.

1 - "those were the days"... All three grades, how a day at the footy should be
2 - Players who supported their club.... seeing the lower grades go around. Unlike today with headphones on in a dressing room, sitting in a corner mindlessly scrolling through a phone. There's no true team spirit.
3 - Being grumpy that footy "was better in the 90's". and we've lost our way since.

Nothing like sitting on the Northern hill at Shark Park, The Eastern Hill at Kogarah, the eastern Hill at belmore...... watching all 3 grades and then the scramble to get to you car, sometimes kilometres away parked outside someone's flash house in a cul-de-sac... and going home tooting your horn in victory, or in the deadly silence of defeat (apart the the tooting horns of the opposition fans).

It was also a time I was actually proud of the Dragons. the 90's were an era that we punched well n truly above our weight and made finals most seasons, and yes 4 GF's that we lost. But 1992-1996 were the glory years for me as a supporter. 2010 was amazing (and a relief)... but nothing still comes close to watching the Dragons in those 5 seasons '92-'96.... especially '96 - my all time favourite Dragons season and squad. They were a true team who played for each other - sadly lacking in many league sides these days - especially my own.

F*** I feel old. And a bit grumpy.

If you got through those diatribe of a post, thanks for reading.

Yes i miss the days of sitting on the hill at the old Sports Ground watching all three grades and you you knew all the players coming the grades playing under 23s and reserves, this was back in the 70s and 80s, the Sports Ground ran east west so one of teams ran straight into the setting sun in the second half.

yeah I never saw league there but was there for the final night of speedway before it was ripped down for fox studios…

Yes I heard the ground ran east-west. Phil Gould has a brilliant story about a game he played there against Bob Fulton… he retold it recently on his podcast when Fulton passed away..

The Sports Ground did have a speedway track around it at one time but that was way before i was born. The speedway was run at the Royal Easter Show ring and that made way for Fox Studios, the Sports Ground was demolished for the SFS.

For some reason every time i was in a car driving past Balmain Leagues club at Rozelle i would wind down the window and scream out "Tigers suck".

Missing Darrell Eastlake.

Bloke was an f**king icon.

Calling Motorcycle races, best in the world.

We’d all be leaning into the corners of the sofas with gritted teeth against the old upright fan. Barry Sheene would whinging on about the tyre selection in Osaka or whatever.

And Tony Grieg, the Aussie-hater lol.
