I haven't watched Stand By Me since I was in high school myself, so I'll probably be one of those people in the "it's so great" category (at least it was when I was closer to the age of the characters by a couple of years rather than a couple of decades!).
We actually have this in our extended VHS collection so will have to pull it out for a nostalgic viewing.
It's based on a short story so I guess they can be forgiven a little bit for not fleshing out characters, having said that Shawshank Redemption was also in the same collectino of short stories, which is pretty good in that regard.
Watched "Run All Night" the other day with couple of mates (got to the cinema late, was between that, Focus or Chappie) - turns out to be pretty much the opposite of Taken, in that Liam Neeson's character is the dad being chased to protect his son rather being the chaser. Not brilliant but fun enough to kill 90-odd minutes with some classic Liam Neeson badassery.
