but he hasn't been resigned yet, surely the money freed up by his contract ending would be a fair amount to buy a semi decent front rower.

Not if you have deferred payments from Tiger players the past two years. Plus big upgrades to Heighno and resigning Gibbs/ Galloway.

Why do you think tigers are trying to offload players? They are probably already at the cap and that’s without signing anybody.

Though if Benji does leave in the offseason or if Ellis doesn’t turn up for pre-season training– Tigers could buy any prop they wanted. LOL

If you didn’t have much money why wouldn’t you sign Jesse Royal from the Knights. OR if you have a little more you could easily steal a roosters prop such as Lopini Paea or Frank-Paul Nuusala.

I'd love to be able to see as a publically available document on the NRL website (not the clubs) the audited salary cap spreadsheets for each club - so we can see where the money is going- I presume privacy may or may not be an issue - if privacy is - then deidentify the individual players- although I suspect it wouold not eb an isse since when clubs sign someone they (and the players or their managers) proudly announce to the world what they have signed for.

The average "john and jane doe" out there in league supporter land just cannot fathom how some clubs stay under the cap (eg Melbourne / Roosters) and other proclaim they are at cap level with little or no talent on the books (eg WT / Penrith). Something just does not seem right. The only thing I can figure is the bonus of being at a successful club brings on players wanting to play for the status, and with increased status they are able to get extra payments eg individual advertising outside the cap.

Anyway- I hope some players do go early and allow some fresh players the opportunity.

As posted before, we are suffering from "back loaded contract syndrome" take it from me we could not even afford Peter Lewis.I also think you will find Benji is staying put for 2009 and probably exit stage right come 2010. So maybe a offseason of roids for our forwards is our only hope

*edit - unless you have a source to prove teams are cheating the cap, you cannot just state undeniably they are over the cap*

The cap is a total farce to be honest. How can the Storm have practically an origin team and be under the cap. We are at the 'legal' cap. Resigning Gibbs and giving Morris such a large contract were the problems. That is wasted cash just between those players. Probably around 450k between both, which could be used to get a fairly good half back or a class front rower.

I agree. We can beat teams when we tackle well, and back each other. And have a bit of luck with injuries to front rowers. I don't know who we are paying too much, but yes, if we could afford some okay bench forwards like George Rose or give one of the BRET/Wests front rowers a go like Tandy or Shirnack, but most importantly just play like it means something I think we are in with a show.

Steve Turner wouldn't have been an Origin payer if he still played at Penrith, same goes for Brett White if he was still with Saints, was it. Their champion team has made it seem like everyone's a superstar.

I watched the BRET game againts Wentworthville the other week, and BRET aren't a massive team but they held off Wenty for about four or five sets of six on BRET's line just with guts and never giving up. It was amazing, and seems like something that any team can do if it wants to.

If we listened to you guys I think we'd literally go out without any front rowers except a ball playing Payten every week. That's ignoring injuries.

Melbourne are under the cap because the majority of their players are sh*t. Even their Aussie half knows he's only any good because of their game plan. Thus he re-signed for 250 or something. They bring through good junior talent on junior wages who go well... aka Folau.

We don't get the best from our talented players. Even stifling them. And we aren't bringing through new talent because of the f**k up that was sending all the good players to bret. We're in trouble in terms of bringing players through from the west.
