I loved the cardboard slide down the back of the hills as a young kid, even though they were far to vertical and you often ended up in the fence.
I remember being obsessed with finding good bits of cardboard throughout the week and for some reason sneaking it in under my jersey in case It got taken off me.
We used to raid the big bin behind the western stand. Or only stand back then. lol. The boxes paddlepops came in worked pretty well from memory. If you didnt hit the fence, you werent having a go.

My dad never used to let me ride the cardboard down the hill, or play footy with the kids on the concrete pathway. Said I would get hurt.

So what does he do instead? Makes me sit down and watch the Panthers play 80 minutes of football.

Another memory at another stadium. Shark Park. Or Toyota Park I think it was called back then. We got absolutely flogged.

Kids playing football on a concrete slab near steel seats. Kid trips with the footy and smashes his head on the steel and grates the skin off his knees and hands as he hits the ground. Absolutely brutal.

After that I had no urge to play football while I was actually at the football.

Where is Fibroman these days?

Moved to Taree. Part time taxi cab driver. Haven’t seen him since Round 1 game against the Roosters. The sea change seems to be working for him.

He needed a change and I think it has worked for him in the short term.

When he was last down a month or so back I wasn’t able to catch up with him but when he is next down, hopefully we will be back at Panthers Stadium and he will be sitting alongside of us in the Western Stand cheering on the boys. I will always make available one of my spare season tickets to him for ever and a day.

Was spelt Ribald. :)

Not something I would admit to knowing but all good.

Isn’t it somewhat amazing around the current debate about Tyrone May and his indiscretions filming his activities on a phone!!!!

Back in the day, for us older fans, the only access we had as youngsters to the real world were the adult shops along George Street where magazines such as ‘Ribald’ were then wrapped in plastic and you had to buy to see so to speak. Nowadays it is a different world and we are all (myself excluded) filming ourselves having sex on mobile devices.

If only I was a tad younger and had a newer phone than a Nokia 3310!!!!!

Growing up in Wenty I seemingly went to more Eels matches than Panthers matches with mates in the late 90s. They had a lot of Friday night matches.

I have vague memories as a 12 year old sitting on the hill watching us get thumped 70-7 by Manly Warringah back in 1973.

In a funny sort of way it sort off cemented my allegiance to the Panthers was always go to be with them for the long haul.

It was a long walk home that day, across Jamo Park back home to my then family home in South Penrith.

I was there too. Reg Walton nearly scored from the kick off, then it was one way traffic against us. I think there was 6750 people there. 14 tries and 14 goals against us. But it was just another day at Penrith Park!

Though there are no game records from 72-75, from 76-77 Reg Walton has 0 wins to his name. Tough way to end your career.

Worst loss I can recall seeing live was probably a Melbourne match on a Sunday. I thought it was about 40 points but I remember as a kid walking out early:

14-58. I have vague memories of Justin Holbrook looking decent at halfback.

This other massacre also comes to mind. Not at Penrith Park thankfully:

One of the Eels back 5 gave one of the meanest fends I've seen. Just palmed one of our guys like Beckett right in the face. Was boys v men stuff.

Oh, and later that night Hoppa was sticking his finger up guys arses. So memorable for a lot of wrong reasons.

He was a decent fullback. We’ve had many decent and even better fullbacks over the years. It is the one position we’ve probably never had trouble filling. Reggie was probably 70 kilo’s wringing wet but still a fine player in his limited days.

I was at both of those terrible losses in 2001 as well. The loss against Parra was deflating, given that we had a reasonably good 2000 season and that there was an optimistic outlook for 2001.

The worse was yet to come in round 1 2002 when Parra annihilated us 64-6 at Parra Stadium. I was there for that game and the walk from the stadium back to where my car was parked in the Parra CBD was harrowing, being dressed up in my Panthers gear and all and being harassed by Eels supporters.

Fortunately, there is a happy ending as this leadto what was one of my favourite Penrith memories and it was the mother of all payback games when Penrith played Parra almost two years later after the 2002 64-6 debacle when we smashed them 40-22 to not only win the match, but to claim the JJ Giltinen Shield and the Minor Premiership!!

I believe the 03 Parra game was sold out because I couldn't get a ticket. That and the week 1 Broncos game I missed. But I saw some classic matches live in 03:

Broncos - Tallis v Ross. I watched that from the Eastern grandstand.

Dogs - One of the best, Luke Lewis amazing under the high ball. Great viewing from the hill near the scoreboard end.

Dragons - Gower kicking it dead in goal not realising there was still time for a drop out. John Lang lost his shit. We won but blew a decent lead, immature performance. Family hill that day.

Roosters - We got toweled but the build up to that game was big. Great atmosphere in the ground during the lead up games. Again from the scoreboard hill.

There would be more from 03 but I can't remember right now.

I had a similar walk of shame in the 90's at Canberra's Bruce Stadium when we lost in all three grades (in the good old days when you had three grades play the same day and at the same place). The knucklehead Canberra fans were just giving it to the Wife and I as we walked to the car through the car park. The ground must have been close to full capacity as well, so there were plenty of fans around to pass on their commiserations.

We had driven down from Penrith the day before and stayed there overnight, before heading to the ground to watch the games. We were not part of a supporters group and went there on our own sitting among a packed section of Canberra fans, instantly trebling the number of teeth and the IQ of that section. They could barely contain their joy as the afternoon progressed and the train wreck unfolded. It started badly and just got worse. I swear I could hear banjoes and the sound of pigs squealing. By the time the first grade game started the crowd had reached fever pitch and the green machine rolled through us, trampling us into the dirt. In those days Canberra were the best team of that era, with Meninga, Stuart, Daley, Walters and others. Salary caps were something other teams worried about in those days. Nobody batted an eyelid that most of the Australian team played for Canberra. Nothing to see here, move along sir.

It was a long drive back to Penrith that evening......
