At the time of the merger shenanigans, Balmain was looking for mergers and all that. Merging with the Pies was a shock to most, as the prime candidates were Parramatta. Also, upon reading some history, you may remember the Adelaide Rams. They had built up a talented playing roster for 1999, and probably would have made the finals. However, at the end of 1998, they were told by the NRL they were off the agenda. The Rams then went looking for clubs to merge.

Balmain were actually very interested in this, and no doubt they would have relocated and become the Adelaide Tigers should it have eventuated. However, the bastards at the NRL got in the way, stopping balmain from further talks with the Rams.

The other suggestion was a Melbourne relocation to be the Melbourne Tigers.

What would you, the fans, have preferred happen?

yes, with the beautiful powers of hindsight I'd choose stand alone.

Of the options above, I think wests were the best option given that parra wanted to take us over. if parra had of given us a decent offer then they would be the ideal partner considering the close proximety of the clubs but that wasn't to be and wests allowed us a certain degree of independance.

Now thats an interesting topic. Of those choices I would be happy with the current JV. Dont think we could have stood alone. I would have preferred an option of one inner city side - but Easts wanted to have a majority shareholding so that was doomed. At least with Wests its a genuine 50:50 deal and its in Sydney.

prefered options (in order)

1. stand alone
2. central coast move
3. melbourne move (the plans for that one involved a partnership with the richmond tigers including joint membership - giving instant access to one of the largest supporter bases in australian sport)
4. east coast tigers

---------

5. wests merger

i would have prefered us to compete soley in the metro cup to any other option

Was East Coast Tigers actually ever thought of by the Balmain board? It would've been a good idea - second Brisbane team in East Brisbane, and that QRL team is one of the bigger, more well off teams.

I wasn't sure if that was considered by the board so I didn't include it, CC I don't think was considered either.

why would moving out of sydney be a better option? i just don't understand that at all. We were the Balmain tigers. BALMAIN!!! Why the hell would brisbane or melbourne be better then a club that still plays half its matches at leichhardt? sure, this JV has so far been a failure but I'm glad I can at least go to leichhardt and watch a match.

EXACTLY!!

I cant believe anyone is suggesting that we should have moved interstate.

That would have signalled the end for me. Wests Tigers was the best option, apart from standing alone.

You have no idea, you get to see who play? 50% of a club that you have followed for probably your whole life? Woopty doo, so you would be happy if the two joint ventures merger and then you will have 25% of your original club? You and your ilk are one of the prime reasons why Balmain have very little chance to get back to the glory we once had. Instead of challenging the rules, you bend over to them with a smile on your face.

Whats even better is since this is not rleague you cannot just delete my post because you are too scared to answer it.
