With 2020 ending in disappointment, where to for the Roosters? What went wrong? Will 2021 see a return to the top?
Despite being premiership favourites a month ago, Roosters were badly found out in the last 3 games. We won't want give them the credit - but Souths exposed some glaring weaknesses. The 60 point loss wasn't a one-off fluke - old Wayne blew a hole in the wall and Cleary and Sticky followed him through the breach.
The long season caught up with us. Older players found themselves a foot off the pace and younger ones didn't have what it takes to hold it together in the finals pressure cooker. The gap between aging forwards and inexperienced rookies was the weak point that blew us wide open.
It didn't help that we could barely go a week without a major injury disruption. Friend's knockout against Souths was the nail in the coffin, but our record against top teams was a fair indication that the golden run was ending. Finished with 7 losses, 3 wins against the top 6, and 0 from 4 vs the top 2.
2 major weaknesses exist that need to be resolved before we'll contend again
1. The heirs to halfback and hooker:
Hard to say if Flanno or Lam is the answer at 7 long term, and we may not know for another year. At hooker, Verrills did well 2019 but missed most of 2020. Promising, but by no means a proven long-term thing. As we saw with Jackson Hastings a few years ago, house sitting and being handed the keys are two very different scenarios.
2. The ageing warriors:
Brett & Josh, JWH, Cordner, Friend - best days are behind them.
JWH & Cordner had nights to forget in defence against Raiders. Badly exposed with lateral movement for 2 crucial tries. Both signed through 2023, but we may find they run out of gas before then.
2021 best 17?
1 Tedesco
2 Tupou
3 Smith
4 Manu
5 Morris
6 Keary
7 Flanagan
8 Collins
9 Verrills
10 Taukeiaho
11 Cordner
12 Crichton
13 Radley
14 Friend
15 Tupouniua
16 Liu
17 JWH
Flanagan will be fighting off stiff competition from Lam and the young Sam Walker. My guess is that all 3 of them won't be at the club in 2022, one of Flanno and Lam will be moved on.
Billy Smith to get first crack at centre, with Josh Morris, if retained, moving to a backup role. We need to find out if some of these young blokes have what it takes.
On Brett Morris, I'm on the fence. Great year but a lot of mileage adding up. I don't think Ikuvalu is the answer though.
Collins and Verrills to step up to starting positions in a gradual phase out of JWH and Friend. Again, they need to prove they can hack it.
Cordner in a similar boat, but one of the co-captains needs to stay in the starting lineup. But if he struggles to hold it together again in 2021, he might be convinced to retire early.
Crichton needs to start, and Radley's return will be a godsend. We missed his energy.
Tupouniua rounds out the bench over Butcher, who I am not sold on at all.
SBW?? On face value I wouldn't say no to another year of the great man, at the right price. But even if he is available, he only makes our 17 if we have another poor run with injury. As I've said, its a year to be investing in youth rather than pinning our hopes to former glories.
I'd call 2021 a transition/investment year. Expect a 5th-8th finish. I don't think we'll be seriously competing for a premiership. With limited room for any major signings, we need to regroup and see which of the young blokes has what it takes, and prepare for a serious assault in 2022.
2021 will be a slightly re-jigged roster, but 2022 gives us a lot more flexibility for a full refresh.
We'll have a couple of retirements, some lingering questions answered, and some players moved on as surplus to requirements.
