I don't think we will have to wait for 10 years for it to happen. I expect some clubs to be broke and out of business within the next 12 months.

It might have been better to allow multiple selections for this poll. I suspect there will be more then one club to go broke. But given the choice of only selecting one team I chose the Sharks.

if a club is pinning its financial future on a development on a swamp, things are not looking good.

Where's the "None, this talk is mostly News Ltd deathriding" option?

You can't deny whats plainly obvious. Many clubs run into the red and are topped up by leagues clubs. So if leagues club revenue starts to fall what do you think is going to happen to clubs?

I think many administrators in the game (NRL administrators, football club CEO's, league clubs CEO's etc) have shown over the last 20 years that they aren't really forward thinking and are much more on the reactive than proactive side, so i wouldnt be surprised to see clubs go under.

It's been "plainly obvious" for years and still hasn't happened. And as for "topped up by leagues clubs" why do you think Leagues clubs exist????

I'd wager on Souths, Cronulla and Penrith as the three most likely.

Souths have lost over $9m these past 2 years, PHaC publicly came out and said the clubs future is at risk, and he and Rusty have public said they will no longer be tipping in endless amounts of money. They also still have the same people managing the day to day operations of the club that were in charge when Souths' finances got so bad the club had to privatised. If PHaC and Russ can't turn it around in the next 3 years I wouldn't be suprised if they start executing an exit strategy.

Cronulla - have a history of financial problems. Has one of the smallest revenue turnovers in the NRL. Needed a bank loan (of which they only received half of what they were asking) just to pay the Staff over the off season, and all this while finishing equal 1st. A bad season could off them. Sure someone will pipe in that they own land they wish to develop - but good luck in getting the financing in the current economic climate.

Panthers - poor management, can't even afford to sack their coach, are slashing their football budget by $500k+ in 2009 while other teams are expanding. Sold 50% of their Leagues Clubs to ING so they could attempt to re-finance their huge amount of debt.

1/ who's saying they wanted to sack Elliot? Even if they were why would they just throw $400k away? So they go broke?
2/ teams who rely on leagues club grants aren't expanding, and that is quite a lot. So how many do you know that are expanding?
3/ it was 49% and it was to help fund the development of Panthers Entertainment Group Mulgoa road. Oh and ING have sponsored the Penrith Junior League so some of the money Panthers has "handed over" has been injected back to our local league.

Aren't Cronulla in deep sh*t ?? Had to borrow a million to pay players but only got $500 000 from St George Bank because of the risk ..
