A variety of reasons. Although you can have conversations on twitter thats not really the point of it. People follow celebrities or sports stars because they are fans and like to hear where they are up to. Otherwise you can follow comedians for jokes in 140 characters or less, news based accounts like smh or, for example, the penrith panthers accounts. Otherwise there are accounts which are mostly just people sending out links for interesting stuff you can check out when you're bored.

The following thing isn't like being a facebook friend. It's a one way information stream, I can follow an account to see what they are posting but they don't have to follow me back if they don't want to. Celebrities and the more popular accounts will have lots of people following them, but will usually only follow people they know.

I know it sounds like a bit of a wank, and it often is, but there's more to it than there initially appears.
