It's common knowledge who the Big 5 Sydney teams are... The rest are just making up the numbers.
Canterbury, Tigers, Parramatta, Dragons, Roosters, Souths

6 for mine. Although of that bunch the Roosters seem to underperform in terms of memberships.

My point is if 18k is considered a sellout for Kogarah, how did the Dragons only get 15k for a semi on a Sunday afternoon?

Your guess is as good as mine. While an excuse could be that Manly fans don't travel (there were VERY few of them there), I honestly don't believe the crowd figure was accurate. It looked VERY similar to the 18k that was named the previous Sunday.

The media advertised it as selling out before it was even close. Happened the same way with Parra the year before. I also think it very much had something to do with the opposition, most Manly fans didn't give themselves a chance, and neither did anyone else.

No excuses, but as far as final's games, it wasn't exactly a high quality product to sell prior to the event. Most Manly fans would have been unwilling to travel that far to see their team lose which was a 9/10 chance. The ground looked crowded on TV.

If you were there, you'd wonder how they got the figure. You'd be struggling to fit another 100 in, let alone 3,000.

It's covered in another thread, but the vast majority who attended the game didn't buy the official figure. It was more than the week before v Souths - and that was over 18,000.

What is extraordinary is a figure gets posted up and it is accepted despite the evidence of our eyes. And those who dispute it, the eye witnesses, are getting dismissed out of hand? Last time I checked, we are all allowed to dispute outcomes.

I know it is near impossible to have a rational discussion about this with some, as there are those who will believe what they want to believe. And of course, there are always those that have their own agenda. But it is a fact that crowd figures have been found to be in error before, and those are just the errors that were found out or investigated.

FTR, that was the first Sunday day game we've had at Kogarah in 2010. We had a lion's share of Friday night games - to the point that other clubs were complaining. The reason why Channel 9 kept on insisting on getting Dragons Friday night games was simple enough, it was about ratings. They crunched their figures and saw that Saints were bringing in the highest viewership and best advertising returns. Perhaps this is more relevant to the topic.

Number of Live (Sydney) Friday night games

Dragons - 7

Bulldogs - 8

Parramatta - 7

Tigers - 6

As you can see, pretty close between Sydney's big 4. It gets a little more interesting when we average out the ratings for those games...

Dragons - 631,000

Bulldogs - 641,000

Parramatta - 655,000

Tigers - 619,000

Also interesting is to look at Fox ratings for those clubs...

Dragons - 223,000 average

Bulldogs - 232,000 average

Parramatta - 285,000 average

Tigers - 245,000 average

Take that for what you will but here's my summary:

*Bulldogs got more Friday night live games in Sydney than any other club
*Parramatta averaged the most in the FNL time-slot, followed by the Bulldogs then the Dragons
*Both Parramatta and the Tigers averaged more than the Bulldogs on FOX
*Dragons averged the least on FOX of the big 4

Further summation (Big 4):

Crowds - Dogs, Tigers, Parra, Drags
FNL ratings - Parra, Dogs, Drags, Tigers
FOX - Parra, Tigs, Dogs, Drags

Dragons last in 2/3 of the categories.

As a Dogs fan I'm a little biased, but those are just stats. I'd say the Dragons are definitely not first in Sydney. It's a close race between Dogs, Parra and Tigers.

Add to that the highest rating game in Sydney outside of the opening round was between the Bulldogs and the Tigers.

The amount of fans a club has can not be judged solely on crowd averages nor members, and this post proves it.

The amount of fans should be judged on the above, as well as TV ratings and merchandise.

A parramatta fan that is based in QLD, and cant make it to any home games, is still considered a fan, just as much as a STH.

I think it's obvious the Broncos and the Eels are by far the most well supported clubs in the NRL.

Does this include the prison population? If so, then Bulldogs by a mile.

I'm sure there have been surveys in recent years by respected sources that have ascertained the Broncos not only being the most supported NRL club, but the most supported club of any code or game in the country. With Collingwood and Essendon closely behind if memory serves me correctly. Wish I could find it :?

Oink !
