The AFL only did that so their game could be played there. The NRL didn't need to and I can guarantee that $1.4 million is a pittance compared to how SA has benefited from the NRL and will continue to do so should they remain there.
Of course they didn't need to. But the fact remains that the AFL has a sizeable stake in SA and resultingly SA is not obliged to go with the NRL when there's a clash.

A sizeable stake

How much do you think SA cost to build, $10 million?

I hope at first opportunity the NRL move the GF up to Suncorp Stadium and tell SA to go screw themselves.
Perhaps they should move some of the semi-finals there, it'd be extra competition for the Lions and there'd be no scheduling conflicts.

Problem is they probably signed a deal with SA.

$1.4mil is $1.4 mil, mate. That's $1.4mil that the NSW taxpayer didn't have to fund. It's not a small amount of money. And combined in that was a commitment by the AFL to play a certain number of games as SA.

As much as you may not want it, SA wants the AFL at SA because it pulls a crowd, clearly it can pull a bigger crowd than any NRL match other than SOO or a GF. Why would SA knock it back?

SA is a business. In a business you make decisions that will favour that business. If the NRL ran SA then AFL would never get a look-in there - it wouldn't even be configured for Australian Football - because to allow the AFL to play there would be detrimental to the NRL's business. Fair enough. But that's not the case. SA makes a commercial decision, they've no particular loyalty except to make sure that their shareholders - the NSW taxpayer - has the maximum return on their investment.

A minute ago $1.4 million was a "sizeable stake"

What the NRL have given them over the years no doubt would cover that.

If the NRL decide to ditch SA for certain games because of this decision it will turn out to be a very bad business decision. I hope it turns out that way.

OK, fair enough. It's still not a small amount.

Sure. SA want to have both the NRL and AFL playing there, though, as the AFL's now proven it can draw very large crowds to the ground. Which helps pay SA's bills. c35,000 won't pay those bills as effectively. That's what this whole thing boils down to, not what has been happening in the past or in the future - this is all about which game will draw the biggest crowd next Saturday night.

It would be an interesting exercise. I very much doubt that it will happen. The NRL's clearly annoyed at the decision but I don't think they've let it get up their bottoms like it has some people here. They too probably realise that the game at the Showgrounds is likely to be a much better advertisement for the game than it would be at SA

According to SA it wasn't a business decision at all. Neither party agreed to re-schedule but the Bulldogs decided to settle for Homebush as they then knew where they wereplaying and when for certain.

The AFL never actuallly won SA over at all.

Phew, that's a relief! Now we can all calm down, eh? In other words, a great big fuss about nothing.

Ah, well, that appears not to be the case if the SA boss is quoted correctly in this article.

In a decision that will unsettle rugby league traditionalists, Telstra Stadium officials yesterday gave the AFL finals precedent over the NRL finals.

Telstra Stadium chief executive Ken Edwards informed NRL boss David Gallop that Aussie rules would rule in the event of the Swans and the Bulldogs both being awarded a home final next Saturday at the Olympic venue.

"Neither the AFL nor the NRL would be flexible so we had to make a decision," said Edwards.

"I've had a discussion with David Gallop and he understands that we had to make a commercial decision.

"So there won't be a question of the Swans having to move for the NRL.

"There are obviously good commercial reasons why this stadium would take an event with 70,000-plus people over an event that would attract 30,000-plus people."

According to AFL spokesman Patrick Keane, that decision was reached on Tuesday night
note: Tuesday night

despite the NRL's belief yesterday morning that discussions over which code would win the turf battle were still open for negotiation.

In order for the finals scheduling clash to occur, the Swans would have to lose Sunday's qualifying final against the minor premiers Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium and the Bulldogs would need to defeat the Cronulla Sharks on Saturday at Toyota Park in the final home and away round of the NRL season.

But even if this scenario does play out, an all-out turf battle between the rival football codes was defused yesterday morning
note: Wednesday morning
when the Bulldogs approached the NRL and said that they were prepared to make a concession.

Well SA sent me an email and never mentioned any of that.

They stated neither side would budge and that the Bulldogs decided to play at Homebush as they wanted certainty.

They never mentioned they had chosen one code over the other.

They don't know where they will finish, so how can they guarantee a time and place????

Cheers,

maybe they should boycott Telstra Stadium, and play at Aussie Stadium. It would save them having to flog thousands of $10 tickets to fill up the stands.
