Play Smith like Hindmarsh - don't give him the ball and just ask him to tackle everything.

He gives away penalties sometimes, but his defensive workload is invaluable. Punt him and you're compounding the problem because nobody we have currently could do what he does defensively for us.

in the absence of pou i feel it necessary to give a lecture

1) it's never been about high workrate with ben smith ... more his effectiveness in defence .... he has good upper body strength and uses it to hit hard and make effective tackles .... he doesn't miss many tackles and makes alot of 1 on 1 tackles which saves his teammates from having to get involved

2) the players who get big tackle counts are those that play big minutes and more importantly, in the middle of the field .... you simply get more opportunities .... when you are on an edge they run your way less .... of course even on an edge you may even get more/less chances if the opposition target the a particular side

3) this year smith has been spending a bit of time in the middle and then moving to an edge depending on the substitutions that get made ... paulo comes on and plays in the middle and pushes him to an edge (or off the field)

4) matt ryan is not much different to smith tbh ... he's there for workrate but can make the odd decent run


having said all that ... i think smith should be on his last contract at parra - unless he wants to play for a pie n chips and spend plenty of time at wenty .... he's not getting any younger and is becoming less and less effective
