Who has been to Fiji?

I am off to Fiji this coming Monday for 10 nights, the wife and I are staying at a new 5 star resort. This is the first time we have been to Fiji.

For those who have been, any suggestions or MUST DO ideas?

Any input is appreciated.

all depends on where you are staying

avoid the cities like Nandi, the country resorts are much more relaxing and cleaner

head off shore and visit the islands and the deep seas fishing is a must

lucky prick

I've been a few times, twice this year.

The fishing is great.

My preference is to stay at the Sheraton at Denarau - magic spot in terms of restaurants and kid friendly but no white beaches which are often missing from the mainstream resorts.

Have a great time - I'm off to Port Douglas.

beach breaks at Sigatoga (for groms), the rest are offshore, plenty of surf tours to get you around

Sick link D.O.W - much appreciated.

Yeah, my mate will join us for the second half of stay (he is the guy I organised Bucks for from a previous thread) and he has hooked up 5 days of surfing for us both, all tours as I understand. Should be sick.

Went a few years ago. Drove to some village that resort staff told us about, payed some kids to take us through some rainforest. Ended at a waterfall/pond thing. Was pretty awesome.

Also recomended, go snorkeling/diving.

hopefully the IC have sorted thier sh*t out since opening this year - for the sake of your trip

they were hammered for a while after opening - service copped a beating, but more so the food outlets within the resort got a flogging, and there is not much in close proximity as an alternate choice

im off to the Hilton on Denarau in Oct - since staying there last year im quite content to give them my holiday coin each year - fantastic place with many alternate choices for food or leisure, but it also depends on whether you are focused on beach activities

if you want some feedback on all resorts, mainly the IC - check out tripadvisor.com/forums

Get to a local village. A local mass is also worth attending - the people are very hospitable, but are also very modest and shy.

Attend a local game of footy - it will most likely be rugby. You'll see some great attacking footy from very enthusiastic players and supporters.

You will also get much better value for alcohol & food outside the resorts.

haha nice one satan!

It might sound racist as hell, but rule of thumb, the fijian natives are friendly as hell and always willing to lend a hand, the fijian indians (many of which run the shops as satan points out) can be a bit dodgy.
Just use your head for the most part.

Oh - if youre in the markets in Suva and someone asks your name, dont tell them, they'll carve it into something and try and make you buy it.
Also -dont buy anything wooden - I think you'll have all sorts of trouble bringing it in through customs.

If you tip the locals - they dont expect anything generally - but theyll love you forever.
Make friends with the people running the resort - theyll look after you and point you in the right direction.

Basically nothing that you couldnt work out yourself if youre the slightest bit switched on

if you do you just need to ensure you keep the receipt and declare the item, retailers over there are aware the purchases have to travel back through customs

we have brought a few items back while doing this and have never experienced an issue to date

...as it is a very relaxed operation at Nadi airport when you arrive, i usually take a small portion of the local liquor shop with me

Kava tastes like washing up water and can make you sick if you're not used to it.

I stopped in Nadi for only an hour before heading off to LA once.
It was 8pm and like 40 degrees at night and the skinny arsehole security guys examined my toiletry case for 30 minutes looking at tooth brush, paste, tweezers and lip gloss.
They suspected me of nothing.
I was guilty in their eyes of nothing.
Not very friendly.
