lol, half of the time Scholes is played almost as a defensive midfielder for England. They use him much deeper than he plays for Man Utd, and that both affects his scoring and his all-round game.Dog-E said:No issues with form!??!..When's the last time he scored an international goal again?!?...He was going thru a VERY dry run internationally recently - goalscoring-wise and otherwise - even when he WAS fit!!

Exactly, 'or so he is meant to'. Gerrard is the one who isn't good enough to play the holding midfield, plus he roams forward and gets caught out of position too often. That forces Scholes to play deeper. Lampard would be a better partner for him; he still goes forward but picks his time much better. At least, that's how it seems to me from the few England games I've seen, and it's backed up from what I've read from others (admittadly other Man Utd fans). The Greatest Brain said:scholes is supposed to be the "attacking" midfield player for england.
gerrard holds, or so he is meant to.
Scholes game has changed over the last couple of seasons. Whether that's because of his injuries, or because of a change in tactics from us I don't know. He used to be more of a runner of the ball, somebody who would drop deep and get the ball, and then he and Keane would blaze through the middle and destroy the other team. Now he plays in a more attacking role and doesn't drop back so far (often playing beside or just behind Van Nistelrooy as the extra striker). Now I don't watch every Man u game by ANY stretch of the imagination (I've far too much self-respect for that!!!!!! LOL ) - but I've not seen 'the old Scholes' - the tireless terrier & all-round swashbuckling free-roaming middie of a few years back, for quite a long time now.
I think Scholes is an even better player now than he was a few years back. 2 years ago they bought Veron to partner Keane in the midfield, ahead of Scholes but Scholes soon became the number 1 midfielder at United. He keeps scoring goals, and at one stage last season he couldnt stop scoring. Robert Pires and Patrick Vieira both rate him as the best midfielder in England, despite the tension that exist between Utd and Arsenal.Mad Duck said:Exactly, 'or so he is meant to'. But I would say that all the changes have made him a better player. He's now more important to us than ever.

Yes, that is where he is supposed to play. But he has to drop right back otherwise the England midfield is over-run.Andy#8 said:what r u on about? scholes plays for england BEHIND the front two, NOT DEFENSIVE. gerrard is the defensive midfielder, beckham centre right, lampard/hargreaves etc centre left.

Zidane and Nedved are the best midfielders in the world
