Hmmmm El Coco. Interesting thoughts. I would've said that rap music emerged from hip-hop culture. Any music that involves rapping, is, well, rap.

Rap was a spin-off from Hip-Hop, but I do enjoy bits and pieces of rap none the less. I haven't got a problem with it, although I could see why people don't enjoy it with some artists and our ever so changing opinions on what's cool and not. I still have time for it though dude, don't get me wrong. And hey I'll be the first to admit that Gravel Pitt by Wu-Tang was one of the funkiest songs of the 90's! Booyah!

I own everything Public Enemy have ever done, even the crap stuff.

'It Takes A Nation Of Millions', 'Fear Of A Black Planet' and 'Apocalypse '91' are all brutal, confronting, intelligent albums.

Chuck D's one guy I wouldn't like to take on in an argument.

I urge the non-believers here to check out one of their albums. Maybe you'll change your mind.

Its like any genre Millers, if you don't like it it probably all sounds the same to you but if you like it the differences between artists sound obvious to you. All metal sounds the same to a lot of people but I can hear the differences. However to me R&B and Country & Western all sound the same.

It doesn't.

If it has rapped lyrics as opposed to sung lyrics, then it's rap. Apart from that the possibilities are endless. There are infinite possible things you can do with it.

but the point is though guys

it has no melody

its just like one note repeated over and over again

and another thing

people in other genres - opera c/w rock pop blues - are called singers

you cant actually call rapping singing can you

therefor monkey it is not "just like other genres"

The most annoying thing about rappers is the way they speak and spell. This whole post from Tigerdude wouldn't suprise me if it is written in another language. I'll call it "Rappers Slang". Its Pathetic!

OK some points you're missing here Millers.
1: Not all of the vocals in rap/hip-hop tracks are rapped, some are sung, they usually mixc it up within tracks. Even when rapping you'll find a vocalist can vary the pitch of hiss voice to create melody. Melody is only one element of music, rhythm is also as important. In rap the vocals can be more of a rhythmic than melodic instrument.
2: There are other elements to the tracks apart from the lead vocal. Backing singers, instrumentation, orchestrations etc all add to the melody of a track.
3: other genres such as punk, metal and many ethnic styles often use non-melodic vocals. Doesn't stop thembeing music though.

Not necessary at all. The musical background can be anything.

Nope. Wouldn't want to. It's different, which is interesting.

Rappers can't sing, It's bloody talking a language not understandable to MOST humans.

Nope, they can't sing.

But most of them tend to rap in English. I suppose MOST humans don't speak English, but I'm sure most English speaking people understand their own language. :?
