News out that Tadesco is sacrificing up to $700,000 a season to join the Roosters because he "wants to be the best".
How much do you think a player would sacrifice to join the Warriors?

There must have been some method to this madness, why was Matulino starting from the bench again? I recall it began in earnest from round 1, 2016, our 'Who Replaces Cappy?' thread starter.

I'm going to go with 'impact'...but McFudd did so many things that no other coach in the comp was doing. Wingers as extra props with no other skill, outside backs on the bench, constantly changing players' positions (especially rookies). So far from best practice.

I remember Ben scoring a try in round 4 (?) last year in the win over Newcastle, we were well up and no dramas seemed to be happening but he angrily threw the ball hard into the in-goal. Think I posted at the time that it was really unusual and probably linked to his benching. 4 weeks later he was on the prescription and Red Bulls and things have obviously never been the same. We're losing our king pin forward, one we'll find bloody hard to replace, because of a) the incompetence of McFudd b) the incompetence of Scurrah reappointing him for three years after 4 games in charge (think we'd won 2 of them, including the first in Melbourne which he'd have had no chance of having an influence on) c) Jim Doyle's reluctance (or apparently Eric Watson telling him not to) to get rid of a coach that was clearly not up to it.

Apparently the Knights are going hard for Vete as well. If we can't land a big fish, we could go into 2018 with Gubb, Gavet, an aging every day Lillyman and Lisone. That should scare the f**k out of us.

Don't understand those maths. Certainly no player is worth more than around 1mil a year right. Maybe 1.2? What's the highest paid player?

So if he's sacrificing $700k does that means he playing for $300k per year? Or were the tigers offering him something completely ridiculous like $1.5-2mil per year?

It was Matulino who wanted to start from the bench. Whether the coach should be agreeing to such requests is another thing, but Ben was the one who felt he was at his best coming from the bench.

As for next years prop stocks, another purchase or two would be nice, but on Vete, he's not off contract. We have an option on him in our favour.

WESTS Tigers star James Tedesco sacrificed up to $700,000 to join the Sydney Roosters — because he “wants to be the best.”

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal the Roosters’ offer to Tedesco was actually third-best behind Wests Tigers and Canterbury.

Yet Roosters supremo Nick Politis and coach Trent Robinson still got their man.

Close friends to Tedesco claim the fullback has never been driven by money and his family are financially well-off through property development and investments in Sydney’s west.

“Wests Tigers could have offered him $2m a season and he wouldn’t have stayed,” said a close friend of Tedesco.

“James always wanted to go to the Roosters. The Roosters were the lowest offer. It had nothing to do with money — he wants to go there to better himself, to be a better footballer.

“He has this drive to be the best. He just wants to be the best.

“That’s why he is going there. It has nothing to do with money. People make it about money. James doesn’t live by pay cheques. It has to do with how the place is run and how he could better himself.

“When he reneged on Canberra (in 2014), he was told things would improve at Wests Tigers. He should have gone to Canberra.”

The Sunday Telegraph can also reveal:

* Tedesco, Aaron Woods and Mitch Moses were almost certain to re-sign with Wests Tigers six weeks ago until the club sacked life coach Joe Wehbe, who has significant influence over a number of star players.

* Tedesco never signed with Canterbury.

“You have to ask why your captain and best player want to leave?” a friend close to the pair said.

“All of them were set to re-sign before the Wehbe drama blew-up. They were all set to sign. How could you stuff it up? All four would have stayed.

“All Wests Tigers had to do was keep Wehbe. They could have signed and gotten rid of him later. But once they got rid of him, that was it.

“That turned everything. ‘Woodsy’ is very tight with him.”

Tedesco was most impressed with Bulldogs coach Des Hasler during negotiations but eventually shifted to the Roosters.

Another source said: “He never backflipped on Canterbury because he never signed there.”

Tedesco has agreed to terms with the Roosters.

There is no doubt Tedesco will flourish at Bondi playing alongside Mitch Pearce, Luke Keary, Michael Gordon, Latrell Mitchell and Blake Ferguson.

Roosters legend and club official Anthony Minichiello will also mentor Tedesco, the pair friends from playing with Italy.

There is continuing speculation that the Roosters may though have to offload Shaun Kenny-Dowall, possibly to Newcastle, to accommodate Tedesco.

I don't think you can get away with that. Didn't Parramatta want to sign Israel Falou for $400k but because it was well under market value the NRL wouldn't register it. What's the difference?

good point.
Though its interesting the difference between NRL and American Sports. They are way more ruthless over there.
"Hi John. Hows your day going? Good to hear. Thing is.. we've just traded you to the Knicks. Pack your bags as they may want you playing tomorrow night. Have a nice life."

Ahhh, so the $700k figure was not per year but over the total term of the contract. Makes sense now.

Why was Michael Witt let go again?

J-Ro hanging around for that last season was always hopeless.

Interesting information to come across that Ben wanted to start from the bench. Dunno how you came across it but go back and look at Ben's try in round 4, that is a clearly pissed off and unengaged footballer (as further reared its head with the Red Bull shit). If that didn't come about by being given limited minutes and benched, then it'd be intriguing to know how. And if he did ask to be benched (I'd hope not) it says a lot about his lack of desire to be the best player he can be, because he was a beast in 2015 in the role he played.

If the Knights want Vete, we'll take Nathan Ross. Most underrated footballer in this comp. If he had a stupid haircut, he'd be an Origin player.

The forwards in reserve grade are carving up. Of particular interest is the Sipley Brothers and a beast by the name of Chris (Tavita) Satae.

I am not convinced by Albert Vete, He should be a lot more destructive with his frame and I believe it is a question of application rather talent.

Tofofoa Sipley and Chris Matae are both a lot bigger than Matulino and Vete. Both weigh close to 120kg and nearly every carry go half through or fully break the line.

I wouldnt pay overs for Matulino, its been a long time since he has offered any true value. I think with lillyman and Matulino heading out with Hoffman and Tohu Harris coming in that we have an opportunity to reshape a much bigger and dynamic forward pack with far better balance to it.
