If Sloan is able to be even adequate defensively, he could be a superstar. Lomax might become one, but not for us. Liddle could be a star in the right team, but probably not a superstar.

It's very hard to say for the NSW Cup players and the age group teams. There are so many "next stars" who never even make it into first grade. Kade Reed could be a superstar. But he might never play NRL. Too early to say.

We have had quite a few maybe's come through the system and when you look at their highlights you think wow but most have been more or less good in some respects but not in others. Always that attack versus defence thing. They haven't been like Thurston, Johns, Slater, Cronk etc etc., they can win a match for us and score scintillating tries but their poor defensive skills let them down.

Even if you watched highlights of Dufty and Field now playing in Super League, they appear to be killing it, but they are playing Super League which is a lot different to NRL.

So what we see in say Jesse Williams (great first name as it is the same name as my youngest son), he is showing excellent playing qualities but how this would translate to being a first grader of "superstar" quality, I don't know.

We had high opinions of Tyrell Sloan, Bud Sullivan and even Junior Amone, but I cannot see either of them (should Amone come back to NRL) being of superstar status with only Tyrell now at the Dragons.

Brett Morris to me was a genuine superstar from his early Dapto days to St George Illawarra NRL days. I hope that Jesse Williams can emulate him.

What a great post.. I feel like there are 20 possible superstars out of the combined U19 sides.. but at that age we could have no idea if they will step up.. and even if they do.. how long are we talking to do it? and will we/he wait that long? Think about Sloan, Bud, Amone, Host, Ford etc.

There are atleast a dozen potential superstar forwards but I havent seen enough to understand their games.. but several will play cup next year so we will see soon enough.. some of the most interesting forwards like Hutchison and Meafou dont even have NRL dev contracts yet.. thats how deep the forward depth is.

But with backs, Ive been on the Benny Rumble & Jesse Williams trains for a while.. Williams for me is the one most likely to come on fast (actually and figuratively), I wonder if he could skip JF and play some cup soon.. depending on what happens with SFinau and CTui, we need to sign both these young players to nrl contracts yet mind you.. clubs are watching them and I heard gould particularly call out 2 great young wingers in the saints system.. hes clearly been trying.

Lots of other kids are interesting but not sure they will kick on... Buchanan is a promising centre who I think could handle cup now apart from the fact hes still a bit small...I was enjoying King Togia before he got injured.. I dont mind Hammoud, but Kade Reed as mentioned above is a standout, halfback with a full skillset.. hes probably our next bud type player.

None of these guys will fix 1st grade though.. longer term projects.

Rev, the three backs that have stood out most for me are Williams, Rumble and Reed. To be fair though this is only with what I have seen and that has been pretty limited.

Williams made a couple of good tackles in the games I have watched so hopefully his defence is reasonable. Not sure about Rumble.

I appreciate your input TheRev. Always a good read from you.

We have several promising players as you and a few others who have been keen followers of the juniors have spoke of.

I would imagine that our Pathways/Development/Coaching staff have closely been monitoring all of the players to see which ones should ultimately be signed up with the aim of one day becoming first graders. I really hope that they make the right choices as over the recent years, we have let many decent ones go like James Schiller - played really well in the Raiders win tonight, Jack Bostock, Jackson Ford, etc etc etc. so it is imperative that we do keep "the best" seeing that we cannot keep them all.

I would also like to think that we will have a couple of super stars one day that will help win us a premiership - how good would that be?

yes we seem to let the ferrari wingers go
Williams is your Ferrari baby!

I did want to mention Bostock, Bennett snuck under our guard there.. That was the young superstar that would have easily transitioned to 1st grade, and would have had 2 seasons under his belt by now.. He could be a rep player, I'm not sure just what we lost yet.. But any young back that hits like a truck on debut has the foundation for a 1st grade career.. You can't teach that part.

Buchanan could handle Cup now. He's tough. It's hard to say how good he will be, but he's at least tough enough to play against men.

How in hell did Bennett sneak under our guard? Who was guarding and who didn't try to keep him from that Bennett lurch (I know, all you have to mention to some players is Bennett's name and their hairs stick up and they say, take me). Seriously though, I say that we have to keep the best of the best. Wasn't Bostock one of the best? Did we as usual dilly dally on him too long with a piddly offer dangling in front of him rather than a big juicy one to keep him?

Please Dragons recruiters whoever, make sure you sign the best guys we have coming through and not let them go, especially Jesse Williams.

I think under Mary and hook (coaches who couldn't sell the vision or build relationships), plus incompetent board and staff.. And a struggling 1st grade side with no hope of medium term success.. It was very easy for any young star (and/or their parents) to be sweet talked out of the club.

I think that is changing now under flanno, and as the old boy staff r replaced.. But its still a hard sell when you are a club fighting for the spoon with no big recruits announced.... I just hope we lock in the ones we rly want, as we can't save all of em.
