why is buderus in this poll? he'll be struggling to be in the top 3 hookers this, with Farah and Smith easily ahead of him already.

i'll concede that buderus is past it if he fails to impress this year. he hasn't exactly had the best couple of years... he's been trying to polish a fair turd of a team.

it's pretty much now or never again for bedsy.

having said that it is perplexing that he's in this poll.. he's certainly not the best player in the world, and he never was.

Cameron Smith is the game's best player heading in to the 2008 NRL season followed by Jonathan Thurston. Darren Lockyer when 100% fit and firing is the best player running around, though he drops back a little after coming back from a season ending knee injury.

Danny Buderus isn't even the best hooker in NSW let alone putting him in this list.

the reason he's in this poll is because Evolution is just the kind of guy who posts random topics that he hopes will start some sort of flamefest  exhibit A right here, exhibit B down there with the Dogs letting go Thurston

2008 will turn some heads imo. I think Greg Inglis and Sonny Bill Williams will have outstanding years, both are fairly complete players in attack and defence.

Thursto & Lockyer has fairly poor defence, the best player in the world should be purely based on the completeness of theirs skills in attack and defence.

Cameron Smith is the best player in the world, in my honest opinion, his defence a needs little bit of work, but he is fairly solid in all aspects of the game.

Everybody looks at only attack in speculating this, it proves that by Johnathon Thurston having the 2nd worse defence as a halfback in the NRL, with only Luke Walsh in front of him.

If Joe Williams can be consistent in his attacking capabilities i mean, whats stopping him being as good as thurston based on everyones opinion as an attacking player and not as a complete player, i mean his defence is better than thurstons on record.

Thurston being the best in the world is totally incorrect. Cameron Smith o would be a good option, Farah a darkhorse as well.

Inglis needs to establish himself as a five-eighth, because like it or not, thats where his future is, when he establishes this, he will be the benchmark of the comp.

Alot of things are stopping Williams being as good as Thurston. Jesus Williams bounces from first grade to reserve grade on a regular basis.

As for the best in the world, for me there is no real standout. Plenty of great players but no one that stands above everyone else.

Joey Williams and Jonathan Thurston being mentioned in the same sentence is the funniest thing of 2008 so far!

Making out Thurston's defence as poor to suit an argument is priceless too. Watch any Origin appearance, the guy plays well above his weight in the front line of defence. He ain't a Johns or Gower defensively (who is or has been?) though he ain't a poor defender.

Ill Repeat his defence is absolutely awful...Joeys Defence is just as weak...Ill give you Gower though.

Ill bet my house, that Thurston is the 2nd worse defender for a halfback in the comp.

I have never considered Lockyer as the best player in the world cause of his defence. He is a liabaility in the defensive line and i just can't overlook this fact. Especially when compared with the likes of thurston who is a real asset in defense. Add on to this the fact that Thurston is a better attacking weapon and well to me theres no comparison.

Funny thing is back when Lockyer was a fullback he was basically the best defensive fullback around.

It doesnt sound like you've been watching much rugby league lately. Lockyer although not the most solid tackler is definetaly not a liability in defense anymore. Maybe in 2004 he was.

As for thurston. He misses just as many tackles as anybody. Not saying he is a bad defender, but to call him an asset in defense. Well its just plain wrong.

I seriously hope you aren't suggesting Joey Johns's defence is "just as awful", Johns is best defensive halfback I have ever seen and better judges than I would list him as the best defensive halfback of all-time.

I will take your bet (where do I sign?) and also make mention (just for the record) that I believe you have N.F.I. what you're talking about when it comes to rugby league based on this priceless sample of opinion from your goodself

Thurston isn't the defensive liability some here make him out to be - short memories or just simply "out of sight, out of mind" given it's the pre-season. He is no where near being ranked a liability in defence.

 so because my anecdotal evidence doesn't agree with yours that means i haven't been watching rugby league. I watch every game of rugby league, every week (exccept when i work night shifts on a saturday night). I had quite an interest in VRL, and lockyer was on my team for quite a while so i've seen the stats of how many tackles he misses. No other player was coming close to him. Your right that his defense has improved, however going from absolutely horrible to just bad doesn't change anything. His still a bad defender.

As for Thurston. The thing that makes him an asset in defense is his cover defense. Watch him this year, he stops heaps of trys by following up in defense and chasing players down. Almost liken a second fullback at times.

Fully fit and all things being equal
1. Thurston
2. Smith
3. Gasnier

Gasnier would maybe *just* sneak in to my top 3 CENTRES in the NRL alone.
