Why didn't the AFL experience a super league war?

Yes...I do remember that game, though I watched it in Australia so didnt have the fortune of seeing the boat race thankfully. Steve Roach played in that game for Warrington maybe also Les Davidson and Phil Blake.
That would be the season Wire boasted the double trouble of Blocker and Les Boyd.

I`m at risk of turning this thread into the old codger tedious anecdote files, but since it draws together all the players you`ve named can`t resist mentioning that the Souths v Balmain prelim later that year was a significant game for me.

Watched it on rented video. Great game, great occasion. Bought Tigers and Rabbitohs jerseys, took out a subscription with Rugby League Week, and the rest is history.

Humberside`s two vivacious tribes have enjoyed many festivities down the years.

Most convivial of all was a game on neutral territory at Headingley in the early 80s where following some building works a pile of rubble had been thoughtfully placed at one side of terracing. Cue mayhem.

Which ultimately led to one of the greatest grand finals ever (except if your team was in the black and gold)

South’s were minor premiers too if I remember correctly

signing an extension during a crisis and not going out to competitive tender when the market conditions were better was his choice, it screwed us!

you think lol? like Grant who did exactly same thing to keep his job pistol Pete has thrown silly money at the clubs to keep them onside. We can only hope its not at the expense of the other parts of the game.
Signing at that time probably wasn`t the smartest move. In mitigation, it coincided with a plethora of not very smart moves in most areas of life and most parts of the world.

Has the leadership set out the justification for such a large cap increase? i.e. what do they expect to get from it? How will it benefit the NRL to accustom the players to salaries which might subsequently prove hard to afford?

The cosy relationship with broadcast partners tends to preclude effective scrutiny of decisions. An interview on Fox League with PVL comes across like an appearance on Chinese state media by Xi Jinping.

PVL and Abdo are on the money when they stress the importance of female RL and non-contact forms in broadening the fanbase and improving the image. This is an admirable long-term strategy. It needs to be adequately funded to maximize the benefits.

Throughout the game`s history too much revenue has gone into paying players.

The cap rise isn’t so large

If anything clubs are probably greedier than the players getting 5 million pa more than the cap

if the cap matched the grant then it could actually be a cap of 17.5 million

but clubs are lazy and have little incentive to grow crowds or memberships

remember before the super league war league was way ahead of afl

the collapse of super rugby (which has nothing to do with rugby league) has helped to be fair
Anything in the argument that today`s Swans and Lions fans were supporting Waratahs and Reds 20 years ago?

If not the same people, the same type of people.

Watched that on video too.

Given that I was backing the Tigers, my moment of the match was the Sironen try. That year`s Balmain Pom was Andy Currier. Not exactly Ellery Hanley from the year before, but it was his in-field kick that ultimately led to big Sirro charging to the line.

In nsw and qld lots of crossover between afl and union

esp in Sydney people will go to both

they got a lot of ex league people too frok south’s Balmain and norths but they’ve stayed loyal with them

the swans are a major afl success story

but then the Waratahs crowds have fallen from over 30k to under 10k so I take joy from that lol

Wynnum Manly promote Touch Rugby League in the Redlands. They've been doing it for a decade.

I prefer Tag to Touch. That`s League Tag rather than Oztag. The structure and patterns of play are a lot closer to Tackle RL. Touch has taken on a life of its own. Over here the RFU have traditionally had their fingerprints all over Touch.

As far as I know there is no Ladies or Girls League Tag in QLD. It`s a glaring omission given the success in NSW. Strong participation numbers in the Cronulla-Sutherland junior league and some group comps. Even WA and Vic seem to be doing more for Ladies League Tag than QLD.

I used to love Touch but it's got anal and is all about 3 man/women drives and getting the fat/slowest player offside.
No Tag around my area but we used to have Master but thats another thing there is too many forms of Rugby outside the Full Contact version with Touch, Tag/League Tag and X-League.
