Why do ch9 news show AFL before RL? So much for loyalty.

Everyday on Ch9's 4:30pm news they show AFL news first before rugby league in their sports section.

And they go on about loyalty???

FFS today the AFL news was some dumbass player running into the goal post and somehow injuring himself for the next 8 weeks.

TBF, rugby league news has been first all week (although not for great reasons I'll admit).

Yeah dont even get me started on this. I've complained on this forum before about channel 7 and 10 in Sydney showing AFL first in the sport when obviously most people in this state dont give a toss about AFL. Then I got told off by numpties on this forum saying "thats fair enough they are only pushing their product". Well what has channel 9 ever done to push their product? Nothing. And in the meantime people like me have to sit through 10 minutes of AFL to get our 2 minutues of NRL.

I was under the impression that the 4:30 news was a national news broadcast, as opposed to a local broadcast like the 6pm news. If that's the case it makes sense as AFL generally created more interest nationwide. Just like Sports Tonight always show AFL first. If it's a Sydney news though then I can see your point.

Because Channel 9 know that the viewers are waiting for the NRL news & will turn off or change channels as soon as the NRL news is presented.

It's a matter of holding viewers for as long as possible.

Ch 10 is much, much worse.

Watch Sports Tonight - NRL is never first unless there is a NRL controversy. Watch the hourly news updates - its always AFL news.

Half the sports report is AFL and they give ridiculous amounts of coverage to sports they have on One (particularly US sports).

So what you're saying is that in Melbourne the news shows NRL first and AFL second so that they can hold viewers for longer? OHHH it all makes sense now

Probably because if they don't show AFL first, the AFL ring them and threaten to take away their free tickets and box and all the other free stuff they fling out for preferential media coverage.

The motives behind this might be much less sinister than being made out. Free to air TV stations make a big deal about having a solid lead in to their prime time programs, and the news is a large part of this. Showing a substantial segment of League last (preceded by the weather and the obligatory public interest story) would make perfect sense in areas where League is popular.

Yep I'm sure Channel 9 were hoping ending the 4:30 news with a league story would increase the viewing figures for 'Antiques Roadshow'.

Agreed. If you can't figure out how the news works by now, you never will.

That theory would be fine and acceptable, if it wasn't for the fact that news programming doesn't work like that. I'm not trying to be incendiary, but news is inherently built around a model where the top stories (those that attract the biggest projected audience) come first.

Watch any news station around the world, and the sport that is most relevant to that country gets first shot, and in most instances, takes up the entire sport segment.

9 love AFL

they have more hours dedicated to promoting AFL than League

2 hours of AFL on Thursday night Footy show

2 hour Sunday AFL Footy show

1 hour Footy Classified show on a Monday

that's 1 more hour than they give League

Ha. Didn't see he was talking about 4:30 news. No idea then, I'm sure they'd have some sort of reason, maybe as simple as keeping their news broadcasts consistent as their prime time broadcast, but who knows. I really can't see this as part of televised media's bid to subjugate the Rugby League world at large as is often purported by members of this forum.

Well it might just be because the afl is a national competition. Many on here might argue about against this, but its the case and they get great crowds.

The ball's in the NRL's hand, take the game to Perth and Adelaide eventually, and make sure Storm sticks around.
And get crowds to games.
All equal to a better fta tv rights deal.

Simple really.

1. AFL appearing first on news TV is a relatively recent thing, whereas it's status as a 'national sport' is not.
2. AFL clearly does not rate in the eastern states.
3. It is likely that 'cash for comment' happens during news inter-segment pauses (think Tim Bailey giving the weather on Ch 10).
