Look mate... i admire your passion about spreading the game of League in an outpost like WA.

but what kind of idiot PM's me that sh*t... grow up and keep it on the boards you clown...

im just pointing out to you the fact that most Kiwi's have been exposed to Rugby for much longer than you decided to jump on the League bandwagon.

thats why you have NFI...

I bet ive been follow RUGBY LEAGUE longer than you f*ckwit.

Stop making sh*t up, i didnt say that... RL has as much right to call itself Rugby as Rugby does... BOTH are Rugby... you can call RL Rugby if you wish, they do so in the North of England.. However in other places RL is just League or Rugby League..

and the most salient point in your post "To me"... that makes it your opinion... it doesnt make it fact based on history.

Rugby had the name first.. thats why they use it... and people on here defend the game because they like or love it... despite what some dumbarse aussies on here think, it is possible to love more than one sport.
You no f*ck all 'Bro'!

Union was there first. League is an offshoot of union. Therefore why shouldn't Union get to keep the name?
.
Because the rah rahs re-wrote history and called their world cup the 'Rugby (Sic) World Cup' when RL had it BEFORE them in 1954!

Look at how they destroyed the game in France because they snuggled upto the f*cking NAZIs/Vichy you ignoramuses!

Yes I do has a dislike for RU because of their slimey tactics for 100 f*cking years!

Genuine question, not trolling or anything.

In Australia I was told it was Rugby Union.

In NZ it seems to be call Rugby.

In the UK it is Rugby Union, again to differentiate from Rugby League, yet I keep seeing Australian's stating the game as simply 'Rugby', when RL is as much rugby as RU.

In northern England, 'Rugby' is RL.

hmm i don't know, i grew up knowing that one sport was called Rugby League and the other sport was Rugby union but when you talk about both sports in slang its "league" for Rugby League and "Rugby" for union.

But i think its because Rugby Union takes the history of the sport known fully as "rugby", even though both sports were born out of a disagreement which created Northern Union (now Rugby League) and Rugby Union.

Since then (1895) Rugby League has always been one step ahead with rule changes and using technology to help officiate the game, it became professional first etc etc.

Rugby League acknowledges the history of "Rugby" but Rugby union acknowledges the history of "Rugby" as their history and Rugby League is nothing more then a few people who took a ball and broke away from Rugby Union. Which is not the case.

god your a Nimrod... my argument was that your average kiwi was following Rugby long before you started following League.

for instance... i played Rugby from the age of 4... my father played local club footy... so i was brought up around a club.

my daughter played her first rugby game at 3 years old...

thats typical for kids here.

now you can correct me if im wrong... but if your coming from the view of a League outpost like WA... i highly doubt your typical Western Australian would have exposure to League as early as that.

and for the record... while i played Union from a young age... ive been following league since i was 6.

And thats used colloquially to differentiate the game... it has as many references to Rugby as it does to Rugby Union....

From the "definitions" in the IRBs bylaws:
Game
means rugby football played in accordance with the Laws of the Game

I dont see "Union" in there anywhere...

Nothing colloquial about it,

the definition says it is a charistaristic or informal use which would be "rugby" in this case,
clearly the formal term is Rugby Union as stated in the IRB site

The website is an informative portal thats been around for 20 odd years, it is no way "formal"... the formal language is in the IRBs regulations, laws and by-laws, which have been around for well over 100 years.. and they define the game as "Rugby Football", THAT is its FORMAL name.

Those definitions include:

Agent means an agent or adviser acting on behalf of a Person, Union, Rugby Body or Club in relation to that Person’s, Union’s, Rugby Body’s or Club’s activity in the Game.
Game means rugby football played in accordance with the Laws of the Game.
IRB means the International Rugby Board, being the association of Unions or Associations in membership of the Board in accordance with the Bye-Laws.
International Tour means a Match or Series of Matches in which a team representing a Union at any level participates against a National
Representative Team and/or other Rugby Bodies or Clubs in the
jurisdiction of another Union.
IRB Sevens Tournament means the Rugby World Cup Sevens (Finals and Qualifying Matches), the World Sevens Series and such other Sevens Tournaments that the IRB shall from time to time designate.
Rugby Body means a provincial Union, district, state, group of Clubs or similar organisation affiliated directly or indirectly to a Union.
Union(s) means every national rugby Union for the time being in membership of the Board.

It seems that any time the games name is defined in the IRBs regs its Rugby or Rugby Football... the only time Rugby and Union are together its talking about a governing body. Rugby IS the games name... it is fully entitled to use it in that sense.

No.. you are showing your ignorance.. its full name is Rugby football not Rugby Union football... it is colloquially now known as Rugby Union.. but its name IS Rugby.

So, the IRB is wrong?

R.League is a branch off, of Rugby. So we must come up with an original name. Anyway, do we want to be named after an English Private School ?

It never ceases to amaze me when people come into the Rugby Union section of this site with a chip on their shoulder and post stuff like this.

If you hate the game so much why post in here?

Both rugby league and rugby union have equal claim to the word "rugby" - they are both descendants of the sport of rugby football

Well miss spelling my username... that really hurt ...[/sarcasm]

I dont care what anybody calls the game... you can call it what ever you like.. you will probably be wrong, but thats cause you aint to smart.

The IRB isnt wrong... That booklets uses "Rugby Union"in its title to differntiate the game... but in no place in any single Law/reg/bylaw of the game does it use "Rugby Union" it only uses "Rugby" or "Rugby Football". In none of the IRBs legal or "formal" documents is "Rugby Union" used, other than to describe a governing body, because that isnt the name of the game.

Both rugby league and rugby union have equal claim to the word "rugby" - they are both descendants of the sport of rugby football
While i agree that both codes can and should use the "rugby" as their name, League doesnt have an equal claim.
