Why do people call RU, 'rugby'??

The website is an informative portal thats been around for 20 odd years, it is no way "formal"... the formal language is in the IRBs regulations, laws and by-laws, which have been around for well over 100 years.. and they define the game as "Rugby Football", THAT is its FORMAL

Those definitions include:

Agent means an agent or adviser acting on behalf of a Person, Union, Rugby Body or Club in relation to that Person’s, Union’s, Rugby Body’s or Club’s activity in the Game.
Game means rugby football played in accordance with the Laws of the Game.
IRB means the International Rugby Board, being the association of Unions or Associations in membership of the Board in accordance with the Bye-Laws.
International Tour means a Match or Series of Matches in which a team representing a Union at any level participates against a National
Representative Team and/or other Rugby Bodies or Clubs in the
jurisdiction of another Union.
IRB Sevens Tournament means the Rugby World Cup Sevens (Finals and Qualifying Matches), the World Sevens Series and such other Sevens Tournaments that the IRB shall from time to time designate.
Rugby Body means a provincial Union, district, state, group of Clubs or similar organisation affiliated directly or indirectly to a Union.
Union(s) means every national rugby Union for the time being in membership of the Board.

It seems that any time the games name is defined in the IRBs regs its Rugby or Rugby Football... the only time Rugby and Union are together its talking about a governing body. Rugby IS the games name... it is fully entitled to use it in that sense.

FFS that is because they are colloqualising in the regs, they clearly state that they governing and law making body of the game of Rugby Union, so the game must be called Rugby Union not just Rugby

Rubbish.. the regs/laws/by-laws are legal documents are needed to make up the deed of incorporation... the game defined in those LEGAL terms is "Rugby Football"... THAT is the games name.

Of course it does.
We all know when League seperated from Rugby to form its own game... but when did Rugby??? it didnt, its not a decendent at all.

That doesn't make any sense at all. For 100 years after 1895 anybody who played rugby league was banned from union because they were seen as professional rugby players. That was the IRB policy. When the Northern union split from the RFU in 1895 it was a split of governing bodies not sports but subsequently the governing bodies evolved the game they played along seperate paths. Both rugby league and union have a common ancestor but neither can claim to have more connection to that common ancester than the other. Union might look less evolved than rugby league but that is of no consequence

what planet are you from??

RU IS THE ANCESTOR OF RL...

RU hasn't branched off into another sport like RL... it's essentially the same sport...

Stop being in denial dude... just face up tp it... RL is an offshoot of RU...

and theres nothing at all wrong with that... American Football is also an offshoot of RU...

there all great sports in there own right...

They were banned for playing professional rugby which broke away from the governing body... thus making a new code.
The existing governing body is the SAME today as it was back then, this is because its THE SAME GAME... The playing rules may have evolved over the decades but the governing body hasnt. it isnt an ancestor its the same code. to say otherwise is just stupidity.

The IRB isnt wrong... That booklets uses "Rugby Union"in its title to differntiate the game... but in no place in any single Law/reg/bylaw of the game does it use "Rugby Union" it only uses "Rugby" or "Rugby Football". In none of the IRBs legal or "formal" documents is "Rugby Union" used, other than to describe a governing body, because that isnt the name of the game.

The name of the game is Rugby Union.

You seem embarrassed about it and determined to believe it isn't no matter what is put in front of you as clear evidence to the contrary, like the governing body's own rule book.

It uses the words Rugby Union all through the rule book, 80 odd times. Try the bottom right of virtually every page for starters.

It also uses it elsewhere and you know it.

I'll leave you to it, you can wallow in your own dementia but anyone who would like to check for themselves can simply do so by downloading the IRB's rule book.

Feel free to let me know if it's trolling to post the IRB's rule book in the Rugby Union section of LU.....

You are seriously getting more senile by the day... on each page? you mean the page footer you dumbarse... its NOT in any of the laws... its part of the publishing of the book.
The book uses "Rugby Union" in its title to differentiate the game, all legal documents refer to the game as "Rugby Football". THAT is its name no amount of dribbling on your part will change that.

Find any law, by-law, regulation... you know the Legal stuff that uses "Rugby Union" and not "Rugby" or "Rugby Football" and you might have a valid argument.

Under the different governing bodies the game evolved along seperate paths. Neither is older than the other and neither has more claim to the word "rugby" than the other.

It never ceases to amaze me when people come into the Rugby Union section of this site with a chip on their shoulder and post stuff like this.

If you hate the game so much why post in here?
Just like those who live in this forum 24/7, never post anywhere else and have a chip or two on each shoulder perhaps?

Rugby Onion has also evolved from the original form of football played at Rugby School. But of course people living in the land of the long white cloud would know more than those from the UK who have access to more information and resources. LOL

Thats pure bullsh*t... League clubs broke away from the RFU and formed their own comp and code. That was the dateof the codes birth... ALL of the governing bodies recognise this as its birth.
That is not the case for Rugby, the FRU or the IRB. The both of that code is the same as the birth of Rugby Football.. Why??? because ITS THE SAME CODE!!
No matter how you spin it, Rugby IS older then League and had the name Rugby first.

Are you really that stupid that you cant use Google???? the UK would only have more "information and resources" IF and only IF the original information wasnt online... guess what... it is!

The George Hotel in Huddersfield is commonly known as the 'birthplace of rugby league'

This implies that a new sport was 'born' in 1895, does it not?

Rugby union today isn't the same as the game played at the time of the split. As I said, it was a split of governing bodies which then proceeded to evolve the game along different lines from each other. Each has their own code of rugby and neither have more of a claim than the other to the word "rugby".

That is just plain wrong.. It is mearly the evolution of the SAME game... Every game evolves and changes its rules over time, that doesnt make them different games.

League split off in 1895 and created their own version of Rugby.. a NEW game. The original Rugby game continued on. It didnt "branch off" or split from its origins, in fact it still embraces those origins. e.g. the Webb Ellis cup... 1895 was NOT the birth of two codes, only one. Therefore Rugby DOES have more claim to the name Rugby than League does.

Both evolved along different paths after a split in governing bodies. Neither union nor rugby have a greater claim to the word "rugby"

Yeah, no.

We're talking about the IRB's rulebook for the game of Rugby Union. the IRB are the governing body of Rugby Union worldwide.

Have you ever read their website?

Did you miss this little gem?

http://www.irb.com/aboutirb/organisation/index.html

The International Rugby Board (IRB) was founded in 1886. With its headquarters in Dublin, the IRB is the world governing and Law making body for the Game of Rugby Union.

Tell me what the IRB call the game?

Go on.

So it's you and some idiot from PR who carked it who think there is a sane argument in this.

The official rulebook says " The laws of the game of Rugby Union". Why would they say that if the name of the game was Rugby?

If the name of the game was Rugby, it would say "Laws of the game of Rugby".

Time to face facts gimp, you're a sandwich short of a picnic.

You can feel free to check this with someone like Sean Fagan if you like, but I'm fairly sure the changes to the rules weren't immediate. The first games played by the Northern Union were the same rules played under in 1984.

You grab onto something on a website and dont let it go... doesnt make you right...

What is the LEGAL name of the game? the one used in the ALL the IRBs legal and finncial documents?? its either "Rugby" or "Rugby Football".. that is the games LEGAL name... got it dumbarse.

Your name is henceforth "Gaylord f**kwit"... it might not be your legal name, but under your reasoning since its on a website it must be true.
