Why Does The Grass Seem To Always Be Greener?

Looking at a lot of posts recently, and hell, lets just say it, for the past few years, I find it kind of strange that one of the biggest 'quirks' of this forum is the continual floating of replacing one player, often in decent form or going through a bit of a slump, with pretty much any player, whether they are available or not.

I don't go into other forums, so I don't know whether the same stuff goes on in there.

Some of the suggestions are quite strange and I wonder if it's the halo effect of gone, but not forgotten, Stake or if this is just a regular thing.

(currently unemployed, so I have a lot of time to think about this shit :p )

It's called scapegoating with a herd mentality. The place is full of "me too" posters.

Certain posters can very easily sway opinion and garner support.

Blame culture has been around since the old O Forum.

I don't mind a bit of the old scapegoating, a bit of sacred cow flogging but I usually am not on the popular picks.

Nicho sucks as a halfback.

I’d say sometimes it would be when a player has been doing the same shyte each year and every year and not looking like they are going to progress their game.

Also fans seeing the team just being a get into the top 4 or 8 and not progressing in finals football team each year.

Also players not playing to their high contracts re Nicho.

Also spine players get a lot of scrutiny because they’re premium positions and we expect a lot from those positions.

I'd have thought this has been going on with all sports since time immemorial. Sports is an almost entirely results driven business and if a team isn't winning every single game people are going to suggest changes just for the sake of changes to try and get different results.

This would be even more pronounced in team sports where there are so many moving parts and assessment of player performance is very subjective.

The Sharks have been consistent performers over the course of a season but can seem very inconsistent week and seem to make a habit of losing to teams when we're strong favourites. I would suspect that exacerbates the continued call for player replacement.

I think it’s because our club has been built on a team full of really good first graders. While the money being paid to them isn’t even, it feels like the talent kinda is.

we keep making semis and top 4 cos we have really good players. No superstar game breakers, which is fine. I suppose.

South’s have some. But are shit, so I suppose that’s a good comparison. Brisbane have some but are ok and folder like a cheap suit sometimes.

Penrith have some, and a whole heap of sharks like first graders, they get it done.

Sharks, good blokes. Good players, no origin talent, hence why we are 2nd tier. Hard to argue as we’ve not won it.

I've always thought there was a typical Sharks prototype as a footballer.
Starting way back. Greg pierce, Rick Burke, hatch, Rogers, edmonds, healy dykes speechley green russell ET long ritson - hundreds of them and up to today.
Excellent, talented first graders. State players some, and even internationals.

But I reckon this typical cronulla player, whilst being a clean, skilful elite athlete lacks the necessary mongrel to win the comp.

I remember a pic decades ago in the paper of Gibson's babe's. A group of young fresh-faced first graders huddled together for a photo. Sparkles, Nixon. Wakefield amongst them. Great to watch. Easy to belt.

Ask the bulldogs.
I remember being at the SFS many years ago as we were being bundled out of the play-offs.
See, I reckon gav miller wasn't your typical sharks player. Not at all.
I remember Gav taking on, single handedly that day, the might of the scummy dogs. Tunks, langmack, folkes and Gillespie whilst Danny Lee was being stretchered off and Craig Diamond was on his knees in the centre of the park hurling up last night's pasta. The rest of the BWB were running sideways looking for shelter.

We've had many other aliens shipped in who didn't fit the typical mold. Noddy was one - so some fitted in like gav and some didn't like noddy.

Some coaches were your typical sharks coach as well. Continuing the selection trend of good looking clean cut fast running bridesmaids.
But never the bride.
Fitzys dad was one.
Maybe Fitzy as well.
Langy.

A few more players who didn't fit the blueprint:
Maloney. Ennis. Barba.
Rugby league mercenaries hopping from one club to the next, leaving a trail of success in their wake.
Lewie. I don't think he is either.
Nor Gal.

Thus....2016.

Yep, yep. Yep and yep.

Many have bemoaned that the Sharks lack X Factor. They do. But not the kick and giggle, bells and whistles Broncos Trannie Fullback type X Factor

The X Factor we miss is cold, hard edge. Nice guys finish last as they say in the classics and to me, anything from 2nd down to 17th, 18th or whatever is the same. Last.
