Why is the NRL currently booming?

You should’ve seen rugby league in the period 1989 to 1995

this isn’t at that level

rugby league is just getting back to where it was

and it has a leader who has a good feel for the game
People often go on about league during that period but crowds were nowhere near as good as today. Although I do remember footy cards and the hype of the 90's

Pre pay tv average crowds outside match of the day in Sydney were 5k. Early 80s nswrl was a stodgy comp with average crowds and minimal tv exposure.

89 grand final when Canberra upset Balmain is when it started imo. Al of Sydney wanted Balmain to win yet it was the first time the nswrl champs were out of Sydney

then next year panthers lost to Canberra, then almost lost the following year again,
then the broncos won their first comp.

simply the best and expansion

league was bulletproof

the positivity today from the dolphins is nothing compared to 95

and remember before that we had knights broncos and Steelers coming in at regular intervals

avg crowd in ‘94 was 14.2k, it’s not much more now Despite the big population growth in that 30 years.

re the op new stadiums and the game looking more professional, clubs having bit more money to market themselves, an admin that doesn’t talk the game down, expansion at last after 25 years of rationalisation and stagnation in comp growth all factors.

our highs and lows eg allianz last night v dragons at kogorah week before are still too far apart but the more big games in new stadiums the better the game will go.

1. Work out who your most important teams are in terms of crowd support.
2. Give them every EVERY opportunity to succeed.
3. Count your money.

I've noticed the NRL is currently going through another 90's boom stage. Im not bias and prefer the AFL, which is currently struggling. It's odd cause 5 years ago it was the opposite.
My job involves going from worksite to worksite and the NRL craze is definitely back. They all have tipping comps and NRL posters. Can also sense it with crowds and general buzz
One theory i keep hearing is Penrith and there large catchment area but I'm leaning more towards better administration

It's quite simple really News Corp have the game where they want it and are our partners. They have the "leaders" they want. Five years ago RL was trying to break away from News Corp and be an independent sport to get the value that it felt it deserved.

Think of politics and what does News Corp media do to politicians when they don't do what they want or vice versa.

That's how it works.

Expansion in being good for the sport shocker. Who would've thought that a growing sport would create optimism and a feel good factor.

Bring in Perth, NZ2 and Brisbane3 just in time for the 2032 Olympics and the good times will continue rolling.

And we don't have a media corporation death riding everything we do.

It’s wrestling and structure that screwed the game.
If we banned structure imagine how great it would be? You really have great ideas. Pre match chat? ‘Let’s all give it a bloody good go! Off ya go lads.’

Do you recall rupert murdoch turning up to the AFL's media deal announcement saying it was Australia's game.

That was a direct shot at the NRL for not giving fox what they wanted.
He gave afl one hundred million extra pa as a way to spite Dave smith

“we’ve always preferred afl”

Slandered Smith incredibly because he was a very capable man...need a rugby league man they said. Yet no complaints against Abdo.

Some never forget. Others move on. I’d rather learn and grow rather than be stuck whinging about the past. V’landys ain’t perfect but he’s got a lot of things right more recently and we are paying the dividends.
Of course he has he isnt being hindered....why is he the face of the game and not the CEO?
