Why Isn't Manly Copping Flack about Norths?

When the NRL decided to cut the number of teams, several clubs had to merge, and Souths was cut all together, subsequently overturned in the courts, hence the bye.

St George merged with Illawarra.
Balmain merged with Wests.
Manly merged with Norths.

Somehow, Manly managed to dump Norths and move back to Brookvale leaving the Bears with nothing.

Why did the NRL allow this? Why are people talking about the Gold Coast when a foundation club has been shafted by Manly and no one gives a rats?

I saw a quote the other day from the Wests Tigers CEO where he said he won't support expansion.

People give him shit, but he has a point.

These clubs merged because they had to in order not to be cut from the competition.

If a new team comes in, then supporters of the Bears, Steelers, and Magpies have every right to be pissed off, the Bears especially, since they were shafted by Manly.

This is just another example of why I hate manly, it started in the 70's....just recently explained it to Raiders fans too, who think I hate their team.
Arthurson rorted everything for his club....knew they were shifty all along and proved true when they back stabbed Norths.
You think Gus is bad????

How would you know that? It was an NRL sanctioned merger. Manly ditched it.

Manly never ditched anything. The North Sydney club ran itself into the ground through poor management. Everyone except Bears tragics knows that!  It's old news anyway?

An NRL sanctioned merger between a successful club like Manly and a totally defunct, bankrupt club like Norths. The NRL were desperate back then, they would have even supported an entire takeover of the South Coast region that supplies most of NSWs juniors ... oh wait they did that too  .

I would have been disappointed if a Roosters supporter didn't bring up St George in a thread.

All they contributed was a brand new state of the art stadium....

Which the state government paid the majority for. They were shafted by the NRL when they hinted Norths would be considered "Regional" under the Criteria. As it happened, The NRL went back on that, Shut them out of the Criteria process a few weeks before the 14 were announced and refused to accept that Norths had raised adequate capital to dig themselves out of debt.

The Deal with Manly was uneven as, but compared to the "Newcastle Knights" and "Parramatta Bears" merger offers, the Manly offer was quite equitable for an insolvent club. But it was NEVER going to work. From day one it was a battle for ascendancy, which as long as Manly remained solvent, would be won by Brookvale. Norths tried very hard in 2001 to kill Manly and steal the license, but it backfired on them. (And the CC grew tired of Cammeray when They could no longer offer Grahame Park first Grade Football.

This can probably be traced back to earlyish 1999 though. The NRL has the grand plan established already, Wests would merge with Canterbury, Parra with Balmain and Souths would get the chop. this was the plan as soon as the comp was cut to 17 early in the year. The GC and Adelaide Tigers mergers were mooted in 1998 purely because they wanted them merging with a sydney club. They couldn't deny the Wests Tigers merger, so they had to find somebody else to get rid of along with Souths. Just so Happened Norths Stumbled over and provided the perfect sacrificial lamb.

It's hardly our fault. If Norths Balanced the Books properly they would have got through. Hell, if they spent 2 Mil on installing permanent lighting at NS Oval instead of the 4 they spent on grahame park they'd still be around. But of course, blame Manly for the dumbest administrative decision in Norths long history of Dumb administrative decisions...

Please, everybody, don't listen to Manly fans about what happened in 1999.

Norths side of the JV pledged $12 million over 6 years. If you add the NRL grant ($2.5 million x 6 years), you have a base of $25 million. News ltd kicked in between $10-20 million.

So, Manly actually put in no money and received millions from News Ltd. yet. somehow, Norths were put into administration, Manly were handed Gosford Stadium, retained their colours and name and later refused to pay ex-players.

Yet, ignorant Manly fans, instead of thanking Norths for survival, actually sledge the Bears. That's why everyone still hates Manly even tho they are now pathetic. Arrogance and stupidity.

I hate Manly like most RL people, but good on them for fighting to stand alone. They are not obligated to look after Norths, who couldn't look after themselves. Next year with some good buys Manly should do alot better.

As for the comments about the NRL going back on Norths' being classed as a regional team if they moved to Gosford... bad luck. The same thing happened to my team who had been a regional team (and are even considered the first expansion club) then in 1998 they were classed as a Sydney club. And unlike Norths we weren't broke.

In saying that though, I do hope the Bears get in, same as the Gold Coast. Maybe one day I'll get my team back too... well here's hoping. :(

 The only sledging I see is from Norths supporters like yourself who go out of their way to put the blame on a scapegoat....build that bridge doctor feelgood :-({|=

The bottom line is that there are too many Sydney-centric teams.

Way out on a limb here.

The Bears should be representing the Central Coast.
Dragons to Wollongong (For real as opposed to doing a Manly by stealth)
Rabbits to Adelaide
Tigers to Perth
Sharks to Gold Coast
Eels a second Brisbane team
Wellington Jets

18 teams

This would leave the Roosters representing the East of Sydney
Manly the Northern areas
Bulldogs mid to south west
Panthers far west
Dragons far south

Much greater exposure to a larger audience, massive incremental sponsorship opportunities, huge increase in new merchandise opportunities, additional PayTV revenue as a pro-rata component of 9 televised games per week. Existing Sydney fans still get to see their teams at large venue away games. Serious assault on other sporting codes. Did you know that there are more Brisbane Lions full season members in Melbourne than Fitzroy ever had in it's entire history?

Then they could call it the National Rugby League or maybe shorten it to NRL.

if manly didn't need the money just as much as norths it wouldn't have merged
you would have gone arse underwithout it and the nrl money
your now a privately owned football team because of your financial stuff ups, max had to bail you out

the merger was a take over[and some norths board member mushrooms actually believed in a real merger] your management, your coach, your colours, no nso

the demise of the northern evils was great, your back to what you should have stayed as, so are we.

and we will be back in 2006 to flog the life out of your turnstyle defence and give you another wooden like your first in 2004!

I think the whole Northern Eagles debacle came about because manly Football Club held the majority share in the NE "franchise" licence. Hence, they could punt the Bears whenever they wanted.

That's my understanding of it.

DJ1, accoring to your plan, there would be no NRL team between the SFS & WIN Stadium, don't you think that's unreasonable??

Cheers
Ben S.
