Why not 70 points? Conspiracy theory alert

Covell on 10 goals

Kimmorley on 10 goals with the record for most goals in a game against Newcastle, August 11, 2002

I'm not a Kimmorley hater but why didnt he take the 2?

The whole ground was screaming for the 70

Did he want to preserve his record?

Or are we being paranoid?

Sully and he were talking for ages to wind down the clock so if the kick didn't work it would be the last play. The kick over the top was the plan it seems.

I thought they were trying to crack 74 to make up for the 74 against in 2003...

My theory is that Noddy wanted the game ball and figured that if Covell put it in the crowd it'd be long gone and on eBay right now.

covell doesnt need another goal to proove his status as one of the clubs most memorable, his status already lives on in the shire, in the breath of every young kid who runs home and kicks a footy after school, for every person who buys a jersey and gets number 5 on it and for every news paper journalist who writes an article on the small kid from the country, whose set to represent NZ in a few weeks time.

What a great headline for the seventies weekend it would have made scoring 70, Everyone was shouting 2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,,2,2,2,.

It could just be that when you are 62 points up, going for 2 could be considered cowardice. I dont know, I'm just checking the opinions of those on here.

I would've liked to see the 70 come up on the scoreboard. In saying that, I thought it woulda looked pretty stupid and ended the game on a sour note if we did end it that way. I think Noddy made the right decision, he had to have us leave the game on a high, not waiting for Covell to kick the goal.

half the crowd was chanting 70 70 70 70 70 70 70 70
and those who werent were chanting 2 2 2 2 2 2
most of the people around me were chanting 2 2 2 2
so I started chanting 70 70 70 70

There you go boys, blame Stevo!

http://www.smh.com.au/news/league/record-victory-stirs-sharks-for-finals-push/2005/08/21/1124562752865.html

In fact, so dominant were the Sharks that when they received a penalty on the stroke of full-time the 13,325 crowd at Toyota Park begun calling for Luke Covell to kick a record 11th goal to mark the NRL's '70s week with a 70-point scoreline.
Kimmorley, however, was looking for Jason Stevens after promising him he could have a shot if he scored his first try of the season, but the veteran prop had walked to the sideline with a split boot.

I woulda loved to see stevo have a shot for goal. Maybe in round 26 if we f**k em up. Even give peachey a go.

My first thought was he was having a shot at the crowd who have been giving him some flak over the past 10 weeks. The crowd wanted 70 points, but he said we'll go for the try.

Then watching Fox Sports, they mentioned the record Kimmorley holds. That's the real reason folks. He wanted his name in lights for a bit longer.

I didn't go to the game .

I watched it on fox at home with the fridge fully stocked.
I was ( like the capt) thinking "field goal" just for the pure comedy value.
When they went for the try I thought it was the right decision.
To kick the goal would of been a bit of a cop out .
I doubt noddy was thinking of his record.
In saying that though he did push covell out of his way so he could score that try
It was a bit like when George Costanza knocked little kids out of the way whilst fleeing a burning building.

Maybe the King is onto something.
