Click here for more rugby league news England coach Steve McNamara will use the mid-season international against France as the first stepping stone towards the 2013 World Cup as well as the end-of-season Four Nations series.
Melbourne Storm full-back Gareth Widdop is the surprise inclusion in McNamara's 19-man squad for the Gillette Fusion game at Leigh Sports Village on Saturday, June 12 - England's only home match of 2010.
The 21-year-old Halifax-born Widdop, who emigrated with his family to Australia when he was 16, is one of three uncapped players named in McNamara's first selection
The other new faces are Bradford front rower Nick Scruton, 25, and Wigan second rower Joel Tomkins, 23, who joins his younger brother Sam in the England camp.
"We have one eye on the here and now and one eye on the future and our ambitions to win the Rugby League World Cup in 2013," said McNamara, who has succeeded Tony Smith in the England hot seat.
"Our focus is very much on beating France but all the players involved in this match will be aware they have a great opportunity to put down a marker for selection for the Four Nations at the end of the year.
"This match is important for us but there have been some longer-term issues as well. It's a matter of getting the balance right and I think I've done that."
Widdop, who worked his way through Melbourne's academy and Under-20s team to make his first-team debut this season, has confirmed his desire to represent the country of his birth despite also being eligible to play for Australia and has been preferred to Hull KR full-back Shaun Briscoe, one of three players dropped from England's Four Nations final team.
"I have done a lot of research on Gareth, both as a player and as a person, and all the reports have been very complementary," said McNamara.
"He's been in Australia since he was 16 but he's very much an Englishman. I've spoken many times to him and he's shown a great desire to represent England.
"He's very excited, privileged and honoured to get the opportunity and he's looking forward to getting across and meeting his new team-mates.
"He's not going to play this weekend. His club have been very good. He will watch his team play Parramatta on Friday and fly out on Saturday.
"He's obviously number two at the Melbourne Storm behind Billy Slater and his appearances have been limited but I feel that this is the perfect opportunity and timing to take a closer look at an already very exciting young talent."
Scruton, who got the nod ahead of Huddersfield front rower Eorl Crabtree, is rewarded for an impressive season with McNamara's Bradford club.
"For the past 12 months Nick has been in outstanding form," said McNamara. "He plays near his best practically every single week.
"He had very good tutelage at Leeds and moved to Bradford to gain regular first-team football and that's brought him on in leaps and bounds."
Scruton told a news conference at Leigh: "This means everything to me. It's all I wanted to do since I was a kid, to play for England, and I'm chuffed to bits. I just hope I get a chance to play against France."
Hull KR winger Peter Fox is the other player left out, along with St Helens back rower Jon Wilkin, who is injured.
There are recalls for Hull winger Tom Briscoe, Wigan loose forward Sean O'Loughlin, who missed both the 2008 World Cup and the 2009 Four Nations series through injury, and Leeds stand-off Danny McGuire.
Tomkins' selection alongside his younger brother Sam, the Wigan stand-off, could see siblings play alongside each other in the national team for the first time since 1989, when Paul and David Hulme, of Widnes, lined up for Great Britain against New Zealand at Wigan.
St Helens scrum half Kyle Eastmond has been included but he must prove his fitness after picking up an ankle injury in Saturday's Challenge Cup win over Barrow.
Leeds forward Jamie Peacock, who recovered from a knee injury to play against Wigan in the Cup last weekend, will lead the side as long as he comes through Friday's game against Wakefield.
"It held up okay," said Peacock. "It's a bit sore but I'll play against Wakefield on Friday."
The 19-man England squad for the Gillette Fusion international against France at Leigh Sports Village on Saturday, June 12, is:
C Bridge (Warrington), T Briscoe (Hull), S Burgess (South Sydney), K Eastmond (St Helens), G Ellis (Wests Tigers), J Graham (St Helens), R Hall (Leeds), S O'Loughlin (Wigan), D McGuire (Leeds), A Morley (Warrington), J Peacock (Leeds), J Roby (St Helens), N Scruton (Bradford), M Shenton (Castleford), K Sinfield (Leeds), J Tomkins (Wigan), S Tomkins (Wigan), B Westwood (Warrington), G Widdop (Melbourne).

Good on him, he's a good player. Hope he gets more opportunities in first grade.

Its not very often England gets 3 players from Australia, especially mid season.

what about Mark Flanagan? I have been pretty impressed with his work for the tigers also and without wanting to sh*t can the ESL, if you can hold your spot in the NRL, you're worthy of a spot in the English National side

they've got a bloody awesome pack. If they can find themselves a set of halves. They'll do very well

Halves are probably the strongest area of the team. Flanagan would be nowhere near the side. There are probably 15 backrowers ahead of him. Widdop has probably got a run to try out options against France, since Shaun Briscoe and Lee Smith have been fairly ordinary this season. Richie Myler got picked for a similar game a few years ago before he'd even played SL.

McGuire and Sinfield to miss out for me if everyone is fit.

Hey Evil,

is that based on his form from last year?
Flanagan has surprised out here, he has done pretty well when given his opportunities. I'm sure Wests will be happy for him to miss out.

Gotta say I am a little suprized by this selection.

Would this be the first English international selection of a player who has never played in the English competition

And Raider_69, Im sure every player in the England national side would be able to at least hold their own in the NRL. (but I do believe that the NRL do develop players a hell of alot better then the ESL)

He's been very impressive in the NSW Cup this year. Filling in at five-eighth and halfback quite often. Has a very good kicking game and is very consistent. Doesn't overplay his hand.

He may get found out defensively against more dominant test sides, but with that pack in front of him, it'll be hard.

He'll do well.

Hopefully the England team play with some semblance of structure as this will enable Widdop to really come to the fore.

The halves are amazing players, if Eastmond stays in Rugby League he could become one of the greatest players England have ever produced, certainly he can have a similiar effect on the game as Ellery Hanley. Apart from him and Sam Tomkins they have Richard Myler who is just 19yo waiting in the wings.

French squad.

Groupe France: the list of 20 players selected
The coach of XIII of France, Bobbie Goulding, has unveiled the list of twenty players who constitute the group France in the forthcoming test match where the Blues will face international England, June 12 next to Leigh (England). If the backbone of the XIII of France still revolves around the Catalans Dragons, new and young players from clubs competing for the championship of France have been selected, some getting their first international cap as well. "The France team was forced to deal with many injuries to certain holders but also with the international retirement of others. Certainly this does not facilitate the task of coaching, especially before facing a team from England in full view of the revival in Four Nations 2010. But all the work done for over a year revolves around the construction of a group where the collective and solidarity are the guiding principles. So without fear and with much hope that we have decided to throw young players brimming with desire and ambition, in the deep international. Olivier Elima, Thomas Bosc, David Ferriol, Jamal Fakir, Gregory Mounis, Dimitri Peloponnesus and Sébastien Raguin will be there to guide them and show them the way forward. This is how we best prepare the next European Nations Championship 2010, "said French coach especially.

The list of 20 players who will travel to England

Andrew Bentley: St Esteve - XIII Catalan
Thomas Bosc: Catalans Dragons
Remy Casty: Catalans Dragons
Vincent Duport: Toulouse Olympique
Olivier Elima: Catalans Dragons (captain)

Mathieu Griffi: Toulouse Olympique
David Ferriol: Catalans Dragons
Tony Leg: Catalans Dragons
Cyril Gossard: Catalans Dragons
Gregory Mounis: Catalans Dragons
Dimitri Pelo: Catalans Dragons
Florian Quintilla: Lezignan-Corbieres
Sebastien Raguin: Catalans Dragons
Michael Simon: St Esteve - XIII Catalan
Cyril Stacul: Catalans Dragons
Julien Touxagas: Catalans Dragons
Mickael Tribillac: Lezignan Corbieres
