Just realised that in 2000 when Barrett won it, not only did we miss the finals, but we got a new CEO and a new coach in the same year. Yes both of them were massive downgrades, but nevertheless. I'm hopeful
Dragons captain Widdop happy to have stable halfback in Hunt
March 1, 2018. St George Illawarra Dragons captain Gareth Widdop, at the NRL season launch in Sydney, says he can’t wait to take the field with off-season recruits Ben Hunt and James Graham and “it’s just good to know we’ve got a stable halfback (in Hunt) for the next few years”. Widdop also says the competition is tough but thinks Melbourne will do well again. (AAP Video/Carol Cho)
Although he was close in 2017 to win it he simply doesn't have the consistency to win it in 2018. When the pressure is on he will turn to water just like he did in 2016 and 2017.
Seriously .. if JT plays the season there is no way Widdop should get close to the games top player.
I know the other JT up there will take votes but in all seriousness they are poles apart.
There is no way that JT comes up with the poor panic options of Widdop with such regularity ...
1. The kicks into players is JDB in the Bulldogs game
2. The panic kicks on the 3rd/4th when he makes a half break
3. Kicks into touch in goal down a short blind side ie charity shield to Nene.
Widdop is a good player and will poll votes ... but seriously ... He is a step down from the top tier of playmakers in the NRL.
He played his best when there was a go-to man inside him at the storm who could make pressure decisions.
Don't get me wrong, widdop is a fine player and will do well for us this year but some times we really need to take a step back and take the red/white glasses off.
