Anthony Griffin in the mix to assist Ricky Stuart at Canberra Raiders

The Australian
July 23, 2014 12:00AM

CANBERRA has emerged as a possible destination for dumped Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin, with the Raiders on the lookout for assistants to bolster Ricky Stuart’s coaching staff next season.

Brett Kimmorley is the kicking coach at Canberra but is on the shortlist of candidates to replace Wayne Bennett at Newcastle while Matt Parish may return to Sydney next year for personal reasons.

Griffin has had a long association with the Raiders, which goes back to his days of coaching their feeder club, Souths Logan, in the Queensland Cup in the 2003-04 seasons.

The Australian understands that the Raiders offered Griffin a position as an assistant to former coach Dave Furner back in 2009 after having been impressed with his work with the Broncos under-20s team in 2008-09.

Griffin was believed to be interested in the job but the deal fell through after he was told to stay put by Brisbane management because there could be an opportunity to be appointed as an assistant to Broncos coach Ivan Henjak in 2010.

Raiders chief executive Don Furner did not want to go into detail about the situation yesterday other than to say that the club held Griffin in high regard and he had done a solid job in his three years at the Broncos. “You always consider good employees and good candidates and he’s a terrific bloke and a terrific coach,’’ Furner said. “Nothing’s out of the question.’’

Former ARL chief executive John Quayle, who sits on an advisory board charged with finding a new coach for Newcastle, told The Australian on Monday that the club could consider Griffin as an option to replace Bennett. It is understood the Knights are focused on appointing a local candidate.

He's not a bad coach, he just wasn't a good fit for the Broncos. His ability to bring through young talent was good.

Here's a question: Why does Ricky Stuart, a halfback with one of the greatest kicking games the game has ever seen need Kimmorley as a kicking coach?

Great players don't make great coaches, hard to pass on something that came naturally. Sticky has trouble transferring anything

But a guy who has had a 3.5 year career at head coach level isn't some sort of unique genius who other clubs would be falling over themselves to save there teams.

It comes across as some sort of arrogance that people think he is so good that he would be great for other clubs, just not a club as important as the Broncos.

Hmm, he's probably not a coaching genius, but I'd say he'd rank above many current first grade coaches.

It's typical sydney media and is more about the anti-bennett narrative now he has signed back with brisbane than any genuine admiration for hooks coaching ability. The Sydney medias temporary love affair with bennett was over the minute it was announced he would return to the broncos. Hook is now by extension anti-bennett which makes him media darling where before he was a hick who they couldn't even spell his name correctly or called him Griffith.

He would have won a premiership with the players Bennett had most of his career

Hard to argue. He won the 2006 QCup Grand Final with a team of "nobodies", against a Toowoomba side that boasted names like Steve Michaels, Greg Eastwood, Joel Moon, Dave Taylor, to name just a few.

Be a funny moment if Broncos win this years premiership; why they would announce the Bennett signing mid-season has me beat should have waited to after the season; exspecially when there in a pretty good position and could still make the Top 4.

Everyone on LU rates every coach as complete shit, so this isn't good forum to discuss this on.

But I just don't think he is as highly rated as you and some other Bronco's fans believe.

Kimmorley was already contracted to the club, he and Stuart probably still dont get along because of the issues at the Sharks, the club didnt want to pay Kimmorley out, Kimmorley didnt want to quit leaving money on the table, so they created a position for him out of the way, working mostly with our Mounties halves to see out his final year

Not rocket science, boys and girls.

I'm not saying he's a highly rated coach or anything. I just said he's not a bad coach, his ability to bring young players through is good and that he's a better coach, IMO, than some of the NRL coaches currently.

I think he'd be a good pick up for the Titans, Tigers, maybe Dragons.

Kev Walters was in the news last night saying it was a case of make the move now or never, I doubt the broncos really wanted it played out through the media but didn't have much choice when they didn't have to luxury of doing it in the offseason.

Any evidence of this or is this just something you pulled out of your arse?

You realise how arrogant that comes off?

"He's not a bad coach" and would be good for your shitty teams, just not us superstars.
