Hard to tell. Hard to see how you can win a comp with the awful kicking game of Gidley at halfback though. Still think Gidley could be a gun hooker, no idea why he isn't played there full time.

Because his shoulders are rooted and he can't make 40 tackles a match on front rowers. He is a good dummy half, but would be a time bomb defending in the middle.

I have never felt comfortable with Gidley in the halves. He is a centre or a fullback, not a playmaker you want directing play.

The issue is that Boyd has a mortgage on the fullback jersey and Tyrone Roberts isn't the playmaker you want alongside an inconsistent Mullen.

He made 30 odd tackles last week, lol. He shouldn't be doing it, though... very true.

He still has to tackle playing in the halves but many of those tackles will be on centres etc wide of the ruck. If he plays 9 then all those tackles are big men on the charge.

I'm not saying he's made of glass but given his injury history and the things Wayne was saying last year, I can't see him playing hooker for any long period.

I remember years ago debating you for months on Michael Clarke as you were adamant that he'd never make it as an Australian cricketer. But in regards to your point on Gidley going to hooker, I agree 100%! Against Manly he went to hooker on a play and sprinted out past the markers and was looking to create something (it's a shame the other players weren't ready for it). It appears like such a natural position for him and I'd love to see him given a crack there. I still remember in 2008 when he played that game against Penrith where Smith played him as a hooker in attack and fullback in defense. Best game I've ever seen him play!

At this point in time, we have as much chance of winning a Premiership as Kade Snowden has of chalking up a tackle bust. None.

It's not the squad or the coach that is the issue, it's the culture of the place. We've had a Jekyll and Hyde approach to our football for a long, long time. It was easy when Joey was about, just give him the ball as much as possible and we will win more often than not, regardless of which team turns up around him. Without him... it results in us looking great one week, and awful the next. We've had 2 consecutive brooms through the place to try and eradicate it. This obsession with Gidley as a key player in a squad will continue to hurt us more than not. It works when he's in an ad-lib role like fullback... but in a role where you need a cool head and structure, like halfback, he is always going to fail. Whenever we need a cool head, Gids - as the captain, takes it upon himself to provide it... and he's the most hopeless bloke in the team under pressure. Couldn't make a correct decision to save himself under the pump.

Bennett was quoted in our Manly press conference as saying "the hardest thing about coaching the Knights is you don't know which team is going to get off the bus". This is a sentiment that has echoed through recent years... and I don't know where the answers are if Bennett doesn't. It's distressing, not necessarily because it is the case, but because we've done all the right things in trying to rid ourselves of it and still seemingly come up empty handed.

Still, we always get pumped at Brookie, regardless of form. It's a long season, and I doubt that loss will define it for us, as much as many in this thread would love it to. It's actually not a bad kick in the pants for us to have after the Tigers game. If a loss like that were to happen, I'm glad it was Round 2, not Round 22.

Will Bennett get us a premiership? Don't know... if he gets us playing consistent football, then possibly.
Agree 100% pervy.

The issue isn't our playing roster, it's the culture in and around the club which has become almost impossible to eradicate.

Well lets be honest he couldn't be any worse than Matt Hilder playing 9, he was awful on the weekend. If you were worried about his defence (amount of tackles), have a bench hooker and then he is only making half the tackles. He seems a natural 9, and yet whether it is the coach being stubborn or Gidley himself, he continues to play in the halves.

Huh? So the squad is not good enough to win a premiership but is good enough to be 2-0 instead of 1-1?

They should be but they aren't. Why is that? I've yet to meet a Knights supporter who can explain to me why. You went down to a Manly side missing both Jason King and Glenn Stewart and you went down in spectacular fashion.

I don't think they'll win a premiership under him but at least with his sway in recruiting they're in a better position to do so in the future.

Does he stay beyond next year? I only ask since he'll just walk out on his contract whenever he likes.

If I was you I'd take our performance last week with a grain of salt. For whatever reason we pretty much never win at Brooky. They could play their Under 20's side and they'd still beat us.

I dont know, i said no however. That inclination to be f**king soft doesnt seem to be leaving. Sides know they can bully them, so they do, and newcastle does nothing to fight back when it happens. Good forwards, good backs. Halves are good enough. But RL is about toughness and attitude, they are pathetic in those areas.

Last week in particular that shitted me. It was obvious Manly were going to bash us, so what did we do? Rolled over. What happened to Smith and Scott adding a bit of mongrel to the pack?

2 out of 17 doesnt cut it. The rest of the boys need to adopt that attitude too

You mean a Manly side that still has Lyon, Foran, DCE, Matai, Watmough, Balin, Kite, B.Stewart ans Williams. Thats a fair list of rep standard players that most sides in the comp would find difficult to beat at Brookvale. The Knights were terrible but they certainly we not expected to win either
