An end to Galuvao's pain

FORMER New Zealand international Joe Galuvao is finally set to leave Souths - not for the ministry but for Parramatta.

Galuvao is poised to sign with the Eels as early as this week.

The second-tier contract with the Eels would be topped up by Souths, but it's understood Galuvao must still take a hefty pay cut from his $350,000-a-year deal with the Rabbitohs.

The Bunnies have tried all season to force Galuvao to seve his contract, which extends to the end of next season.

In June, Souths co-owner Russell Crowe suggested Galuvao retire and join the ministry. In July, Galuvao was dumped to the Queensland Cup and finished the season with the Easts Tigers.

Souths chief executive Shane Richardson confirmed to The Sunday Telegraph a deal was imminent.

"I'd like to think it will happen sometime next week,'' Richardson said. "I'm happy for Joe and I'm happy for us. I think Joe needs to move on.

"I think he's still got a lot of high-quality football left in him, he just didn't quite fit in with our plans. "But he's a great guy and I'd be happy for him if the opportunity came along.''

Galuvao has previously turned down offers from overseas and also rejected a mid-season approach from the Gold Coast Titans.

Manager Allan Gainey said Galuvao, 29, wanted to remain close to his family home at St Marys in western Sydney.

He said details of the deal were yet to be finalised, but there could be "positive news'' next week for the 2003 premiership player.

"I think there's no problem him getting back to a bit of form, he's just got to be settled and in the right place,'' Gainey said. "He went to Souths and got the big money, but it didn't work out right.''

I wish Joe all the good luck in the world.

He is a great guy, and he played just as important a part in our 2003 premiership as every other player in the team.

Yes, his form dropped off in recent years, but so did that of many of our other players.

I was still sorry to see him leave, and I wish him every success if this deal with the Eels comes off.

It's a pity it has to be the Eels, but better that, than no club at all.

I hope it all works out well for him......I would love to see him turn his career around.

Good luck Joe.

That is a good summation of a bloke who was obviously close to Penrith supporters hearts. I'm sure Joe would be pleased that he had made such a good impression.
Football should be more than a business.

Joe can probably do a job given an opportunity. Needs a coach who is prepared to play Joe to his strengths. Michael Hagan could be good for Joe and I actually think he could reinvent himself in 2008. I'm not talking about showing the form he did in 2003 but he is surely capable of being a valuable back up option.

Joe also need to go and speak to Tricky Trindall, and smash that guitar of his accross the backs of some of the players as they run out the tunnell. I reckon a good dose of angry pills will sort him out good and proper. Give him a chalk board and let him loose of Hagan.

The good thing for Parra is that the basically cannot lose on this deal

They are only paying Joe $50,000 a year so if he doesn't regain top form the so what, it's not a big hit in the backpocket and due to him being on a 2nd tier contract he'll only count to the NRL salary cap if he plays 1st grade.

If Joe regains his test match selection form then Parra have one of the best 2nd rowers in the game for $50,000

I would love Joe to regain his 2003 form for his personal sake. Sadly it probably aint gonna happen and his career is in free fall with little likelihood of a reversal.

I was at bible study with joe, T and Junior m the other night and they all clearly stated that they don't want to hurt anyone, and swearing definately doesn't make you tough!.

Ps. I think joey Paulo is a man of faith also, and I will be slipping angry pills into their gater/poweraid any chance I get for the good of mankind and for the fledgling medical industry (orthopedics especially) in the Sydney metro area..
