Cheergirls will be the next to go in NRL and NFL.

Cheer girls are about all the NRL has in terms of game day experience.
We should get on the front foot in anticipation of melt down by the feminists over cheer girls and go the college football route of adding cheer dudes to the squad and making them all actually put on a good athletic show. Thats equality and eye candy for both genders.

The Newcastle Herald is reporting that the Knights are not particularly keen on a womens team for this season due to concerns over costs.

I wonder if this is the attitude of all of the NRL clubs. This would be typical. It reminds me of how the clubs dragged heel over membership for so many years, leaving RL years behind the competition. The NRL had to explain it to the clubs repeatedly, like they were 3 year olds.

Has anyone seen any news of NRL clubs actually supporting/getting excited about the idea of a womens comp?

I have heard a few clubs saying that. But don’t forget that it could be a ploy from these clubs to get extra funding for women’s sports. We all get annoyed when the afl want money for women’s facilities/stadiums, well know its our turn. Newcastle are owned by west’s. They can definitely afford to put a women’s team in but why just absorb the cost when it would help the women sporting communities around Newcastle? State and federal funds are put aside for women’s pursuits why not tap into that? Just saying.

On a side note..... does anyone know whether a 2nd tier touch/tag/rl comp has been thought of as a option for women? Could run concurrently with the 2nd tier RL. Probably don’t have the player numbers for league but touch?

The thing I'd be doing is getting an NRL mixed touch footy comp going (maybe just the Sydney teams) as a preliminary game to the womens NRL game. Get some retired stars like Benji Marshall eventually on board, get the Australian touch footy stars playing mens and womens.

No other code has the mixed stuff going on.

The honeymoon is definitely over in AFLW, despite the massive hype people are now realising that it's only at an amateur level. The skills, speed and quality are light years behind the men's. And it's finally getting some negative coverage.

It's an important step to recognise and prepare for in the NRLW.

Yeah there's a lot we can learn. It'll be interesting to see what level the comp is at. The women's World Cup was highly entertaining and to me was a big step above what the AFLW is dishing up. I'm hoping the regular comp will be as enjoyable.

The Knights are already investing a lot in the grassroots level - their Tarsha Gale Cup team took to the field last night and I'm fairly sure they're involved at the Women's premiership level in NSWRL as well.

As for the rest of your speculation, it's 100% refuted by this: http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/...ce-to-womens-competition-20180201-h0rq6n.html

NSWRL and QRL are already well advanced with this.

Yeah, while AFL is a bunch of seagulls fighting over a chip WAFL is the three stooges fighting over a chip.

Thats what the Knights CEO said. Then he went on to describe grass roots as HM and SG ball which I don't consider to be grass roots.

Calling the crowd attendance figure, before a game has happened is essentially just smoke and mirrors. Good on them if they do hit that figure however.

You have to agree that there has been some negative press in Melbourne this week, for the first time in what has been a 100% positive coverage thus far.

Good on the AFL for what they have done, Im not opposed to it, I just think that we need to be prepared for the same thing happening in the NRL.

Tarsha Gale Cup (the female SG Ball equivalent) played last night in their first game, smashed St George 54-10.
Where do you think those girls came from?

Smoke and mirrors? They've sold more than 50,000 tickets and have capped the attendance at 54,000 (ground capacity 60k). http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-02-...volution-not-revolution/9405724?section=sport

The 'negative' press is back and forward debate about the style of one of the four matches which was awful compared to the other three. It's still encouraged widespread discussion in Victoria about AFLW and drawn it to more people's attention.

You're right though - there'll be plenty to assess when WNRL takes off... but at the same time we're already lucky enough to have the Jillaroos and Kiwi Ferns.

The AFL/AFLW have always know what they are doing. Can't say the same for our mob..

? Not sure you are seeing what I'm seeing lol

Predicting a massive crowd at Optus stadium tomorrow for Dockers women and 20k in Melbourne last week. I don't think it will last but who knows with this mob.
Shts me we have by far the better product yet they beat us to the punch very fricking time. Seen loads of adverts recently using AFLW players for companies and despite really poor quality and using ringers from other sports they have semi national comp with big crowds and clubs clambering to get a side. Compare that to NRL and our usual slow arsed conservative approach from HQ and our usual reticence from clubs to do anything new.

The AFLW has been a huge success for the AFL. I'm interested how the big sports will handle the women's games going forward. Do they plan to keep it in the off season?

Also I'll admit I didn't realise they were already charging for AFLW's matches.

Hopefully the NRL version kicks off with a bang this year. Being able to play SOO, internationals and getting exposure during the finals should help. SOO in particular has a lot of potential, they should push that hard.
