Women's NRL

Cool. Don’t mind being wrong :) 2012/13 was when I first heard of it being played outside of the affiliated states and obviously fed incorrect information.
You may well be right about WA. I'd never heard that. But I reckon the first CRL comps must have been early 2000s.

Here's a bit of trivia. The first leaguetag comps in NSW began in Groups 9 and 20 when they decided to combat the VFL and its tie-up with netball. VFL clubs down there had netball teams for the women as a way of getting women into their clubs. So the RL groups decided to go one better and start women's non-contact RL so they would be even more included and that's how leaguetag started there. It was a success and now every group has its own comp.

What's interesting is that this was an "on the ground" measure and not something thought of from the top end of administration . Just like the top end decision to not accept touch footy as an affiliate when it still had very much rugby league centric rules like the play-the-balls etc. Some really questionable leadership(or lack of) from higher up rugby league administrators from where I sit.

Pfffft of course it wasn't an idea from the top. The blokes on six figure salaries in Sydney would never even try to come up with a good idea for the game, never mind pull it off successfully.

Regardless, it's rugby league money being spent on another sport that isn't rugby league and never will be just so the NRL can say they have all these "participants". When the VFL does this with Auskick we ridicule it.

It is a legitimate part of the RL pathway with what the kids would say are skills that are sick. The beauty of it is you can just belong to a local club for some casual fun/fitness or if you are keen you can go harder.

Except touch has nothing to do with the vast majority of RL clubs. They are completely separate entities. You don't belong to an RL club by playing touch. It's no different to anyone doing any other social sport except some of the skills are more relevant to RL. The number of people getting into RL via touch who wouldn't otherwise have played RL would be almost zero.

Not sure elsewhere but in WA all the nrlwa clubs run touch footy comps during the off season.

I really do think the absence of the play the ball with foot rule has distanced touch football from its origins which are from rugby league training paddocks of the 70s. It needs to be re introduced. Even if it's as a touch footy comp called "original touch footy"! Something at least.

And some do here too. But no one shows up to play touch and ends up playing RL. Certainly not anyone who wouldn't have otherwise anyway. If anything it's the other way around.

Fantastic effort from Penrith Panthers holding girls competition this year and they have 68 teams girls/women’s teams registered nearly 1000 girls playing the game. In some age groups they have a enough for two divisions.

4 teams just seems a really weak way to kick it off. I’m happy for the women who want this, but we couldn’t get 2 more team on board?

6 week season I presume.

If they said there were going to be 6 teams, and 6 teams applied, why not have 6 teams? Cronulla and Newcastle were the other ones yes?

Cronulla held the entire Women's World Cup at their stadium. They deserve a spot.
