Wooden Spoon Question.

The wooden spoon battle comes down to the last round with it most likely going to the loser of the Eels/Titans game. Even if the Titans lose by a point (the most realistically worse case scenario for the Raiders) the Raiders would need to lose by 60 to the bulldogs to make up the point differential.

HOWEVER if the Raiders lose to the Bulldogs and the Titans and the Eels draw then the Eels would go even with the Raiders on points but ahead on FA and the Titans would go ahead of the Raiders by a point on the ladder.

But at the start of the year the bookies changed the conditions for the winner of the wooden spoon to the team with the least amount of wins because of the Melbourne Storm fiasco last year. So in the unlikely event of a Raiders loss (well thats a likely event) and a Parra/GC draw is the wooden spooners Parra (5 wins) or Canberra (6 wins) ??

Or will it be a case of the bookies paying out for Parra and the record books saying Canberra.

Does that rule apply to all "bookies"?

Surely someone, somewhere would be taking money on who would finish last on points also?

You would have got pretty good odds for the Titans and Raiders during the 2010/11 offseason.

I should just go out and put 50 dollars on a Parra/Titans draw considering the year the Raiders have had.

Leading online bookmaker sportsbet.com.au has had hefty early interest in 2011 premiership chances, with little early interest in reigning champions St George Illawarra.

One punter stands to win $700,000 from a $25,000 bet if the Knights can lift the trophy this year, according to sportsbet.com.au’s Haydn Lane.

“The Bulldogs have been the big firmer this summer, with their quote almost halving from $17 to $10 in early betting," Lane said on Tuesday.

“Despite being the outright favourite, support for the Dragons has been quiet to date, but we expect that to change as we get closer to the season.

“One Warriors fan has had $10,000 on New Zealand to make the final eight at $1.70, and $5000 on them to finish in the top four at $3.50.”

In wooden spoon betting, Cronulla has attracted the most attention from punters.

“We haven’t taken any massive bets on the wooden spoon yet but the majority of punters have backed the Sharks,” said Lane.

The 2011 NRL wooden spoon market is resulted on the team that records the least amount of wins for the 2011 NRL season.

Looks like according to the above link, they do to an extent.

The guy who bet on the Knights to win the title obviously had more money than he knew what to do with. Charity would have been more noble.

There is no 'physical' wooden spoon so to speak off. It's attached to the club that finishes last on the table, end of story. Who cares what the bookies do.

Would be funny if there was!

We have one at work, each year it's handed over to the supporter of the club who runs last.

Since last year it's hung with pride in the lunchroom, seeing as there are no Storm supporters up here.

Time to paint it over and enshrine Parra methinks.

I think it would be kinda amusing (probably not to me) if the Raiders finished last on the ladder but bets on Parra were paid out. You would be filthy if you bet on the Raiders to take the spoon.
