Wooden Spooners?

Penrith probably deserve to get the spoon now. We've tried so had to win back our only legitimate prize in the NRL (apart from the 2000 Try Celeration award from the Fatty Show) , but hats off to Penrith.

Canberra are fairly safe now and are a possibilty of winning their remaining four matches. This week we have the Panthers at home, then we have the Eagles at home, Brisbane away and Melbourne at home. We could very well finish up on 23 points and be an outside chance at the eight which means this week I need Cronulla, Newcastle, Roosters and Broncos to win and that would mean we would make up ground on Saints, Warriors, Melbourne, Tigers but the worrying one is the Cowboys v Northern Eagles. That could cost us dearly.

And then there were three...

Well The Tigers completely blew any hope of picking up the wooden spoon with their victory over the weekend.
But the competition's really hotting up between the last 3 contenders.

Penrith's status as favourites took a blow when they beat those 'dark horse' Raiders.
Anyone who was writing off the Raiders better have another look. With 3 rounds to go, they're closing in on the other two hopefuls.
And what about those Cowboys? They had the perfect opportunity to take an outright lead but stuffed it up by playing a draw.

The run home...
Canberra: Eagles (h), Brisbane (a), Melb (h)
Cowboys: Canterbury (a), Knights (h), Warriors (a)
Penrith: Melb (a), Tigers (h), Knights (a)

And there were two...

<table border=1 bordercolor=#000000 cellpadding=1 cellspacing=1> <tbody> <tr> <td></td></tr> <tr> <td>13</td> <td>Panthers</td> <td>25</td> <td>7</td> <td>0</td> <td>18</td> <td>503</td> <td>787</td> <td>14</td> <td>-284</td></tr> <tr> <td>14</td> <td>Cowboys</td> <td>25</td> <td>5</td> <td>2</td> <td>18</td> <td>484</td> <td>753</td> <td>12</td> <td>-269</td></tr></tbody></table> The Raiders have blown thie chances by being unable to lose to Brisbane yesterday and The Panthersmay have let an opportunity slip when they let Wests Tigers get away with a dismal effort. The Cowboys are now firm favourites but it's not over yet. The for and against for these teams is pretty close and the Panthers are a chance if they go down big against The Knights this weekend. They have to hope that the Cowboys get the 2 points against the Warriors. Hold all tickets....

How about those Cowboys? It looked like the unstoppable form of the Panthers was finally going to put an end to North Queensland'sunchallenged status as NRL wooden spooners. But with a solitary round remaining only a loss to the Warriors at a packed Ericcson stadium in front of 30,000 screaming kiwis is needed to achieve a remarkable fifth title. The Warriors were themselves tipped by many to lift the title from the Cowboys this season, but their challenge has faded more and more as the season wore on and they now look to pose little obstacle between the Cowboys and spoon glory!

And the winner is...
Penrith
Chocolate Soldiers put in the performance of the season to go down by 60 to something to claim the 2001 wooden spoon.
Runners up, The Cowboys were leading the race coming into round 26 but blew their chance by beating the Warriors.
Better luck next year NQ and congats to the Panthers!

Well done Nth Queensland.

They played smart football. Took it to the Warriors early which was the key, and from about the 30 minute mark we looked gone.

It's a pity we some referees don't know when a tackles is completed.
