Woolford in RLW

Ok article, standard stuff really. But I liked reading one particular section so I thought I'd plagiarise and share it...

It's a long way from the NSW Riverina town of Young, where Woolford played first grade as a 16-year-old for the Cherrypickers and dreamt of representing St George like his childhood hero Steve "Slippery" Morris.
His career path would instead take him to the national capital, where his 233 appearances places him third on the Raiders' list of most games. But now, in the twilight of his career, he will finally get the chance to don the famous Red V - alongside Morris' two sons, Brett and Josh.
"Yeah, the ironic thing about the whole situation is that I was a St George supporter right up until I joined Canberra in 93," Woolford smiles. "Coming from Young in the 80's, you either supported St George or Parramatta, so I was a Saint. I went to the 92 Grand Final, it was my first one, and I remember being decked out in all the Saints gear. I was shattered when they got smashed by the Broncos. Steve Morris was my hero, so it's pretty amazing that I've ended up at the club."
He always seems to refer to Saints as a "great club" and the "proud club" in all his interviews too. I know it doesn't add up to much but it's quite nice to see a new recruit with passion for his club.

Like I said, pretty standard fare. Felt stale at his old club, enjoying the lifestyle change etc etc.

I'm still unimpressed and have absolutely no faith whatsover that his signing was a good idea.

The money could have been better spent elsewhere.

Are you guys excited about Woolford?? Give me Gorrell anyday ova Woolford but thats just my opinion. Maybe Browny wants to take pressure of Rylesy giving away penalties so bring in the germ. Seriously Gorrell didnt want to go so why did they sign him?

Gorrell was defensively sound, but he offered no thrust from dummy half, no long passing game, precious little long kicking game, and no great tactical playmaking nous. The dummy half spot is far too important to leave to someone with those kind of offensive deficiencies. The fact that no other NRL club signed him lends weight to the argument. He did an able job this year, but the club is obviously looking for more than that. Woolford... most of Canberra's attack in the last 4 years has centred around the ruck play of Woolford - indeed for a while there they were known as the comp's most effective team in that middle third of the field, and they still are among the best. And in that time he has done it without a noted halfback - Drew, Withers are hookers and Carney is a five-eighth. We've got better depth in that position next year with Woolford, Tony Caine, Rangi Chase and also Ben Ellis from Norths. Can't really predict how Woolford will go but things look ok to me, and he's making some good noises.
The Ryles comment was straight out dumb and troll-ish.

Totally agree...Woolford is a signing that moves us foward in the Dummy half department on the field and will also be great for the hookers coming through to learn off.

I was dead set against signing The Germ, (Not that I was consulted with anyway ) but the more I think about it and look at what he can bring to the club, I may well be the first one to buy him an after game drink. :alcho:
