Brimmer ... cut the guy some slack ... if anything it might give the average rooters player a sense of false security (not that Rick will let that happen).

Its interesting you should say that, because from what I've picked up listening to Matt Elliot and Schif earlier this week on radio, they are basically toeing the line with "Well, we aren't going to celebrate making the top eight the way we did, we just want to put in a performance on Sunday that will make us proud".

Its hardly putting your chances of succeeding up on a pedestal, but I think the approach is subtley aimed at lulling the Roosters even further into their 'invincible' mindframe. Penrith fans in particular know what happens when that mindframe is perpetuated......

very true branko .... dont want to give much away but I've personally rang every player and the coach and told them to run with this idea. Also told them that the only way to get past the first week is to play an expansive game, chips over the top, the works, anything other than regular league :)

Can you give me Joel Monaghan's number? There's a few things I'd like to say to him after the game.....

Ok, firstly, I think the whole "negative" thing is just a ploy so all the players are thinking that they have nothing to lose...

Also, think about it... the top 8 means that you can be in the bottom half of the competition, and still get in! We are in the bottom half of teams, yet we are playing in the finals.

I also hate the McIntyre system with a passion. When a team can finish 3rd and still get knocked out is a joke! If we do keep the top 8, I think the AFL finals system is perfect. It gives 7th and 8th a chance at doing something, and the top 4 can't be knocked out. We need to swallow our pride and adopt this if we can't think of anything better! (which we haven't)

they're both as shit as each other. why should 7 or 8 be given a good chance of making it? simon says it rewards mediocrity, but if you look at the stats, 7 & 8 lose close to 100% of the time anyway, so theyre not being overly rewarded by any means. i like the way 7 & 8 have it tough in the first week.

I think it should be 6. If I was the accountant for the NRL I'd think it should be 8.

I can see where hes coming from, but top 8 gives hope to alot of middle teams. Playing in the finals keeps our hopes alive another week efore i have to wait 6 months for the new season :(

Canberra Raiders word of 2005: Feng Shui?

I know my numeracy skills aren't what they used to be in my younger years, but I count that as two words.

Nah, definitely should be a final 15 .... I'm calling it the "Bay56 Snakes n Ladders Finals System".

1. The way it works is that 1st plays 15th at 15th's home ground .... sudden death, lose and your gooorneee.

2. The rest of the teams go into a draw and get paired against each other .... again sudden death. This leaves one team who goes into the 2nd week of the finals automitcally.

3. The next round is bit like point 2, etc until we get two left standing (the GF).

Ha, I see this system solving a number of problems with the main one being the salary cap cheats ... why in the f**k would you wont to finish 1st, ha .. therefore why spend big money on players.

Do you guys think this system has merit :?:

Woolford's right, there's no way in the world that we deserved to make the cut. And it's a joke of a system where a team that has lost 2 more games than they won is able to get across the line to make the finals. That said, the current regulations of the competition call for 8 teams to make the finals, and you have got to play within the rules you're given.

no, jed does not.

What you're advocating is a system where it's a purely random competition, where the preliminary round counts for absolutely nothing, other than selecting 1st and 15th positions. In fact, why even bother running the competition at all? You may as well scrap the entire comp, and just have it as a 4 week competition.

The NRL will never go back to a final 6 competition - that would result in less games, less revenue, less exposure on TV. It seems to me that the choice is between the system we have now, with 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5, or the system the AFL use with 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3, 5 vs 8 and 6 vs 7. That would see Roosters vs Panthers (SFS), Bulldogs vs Broncos (Telstra), Dragons vs Raiders (WIN), and Storm vs Cowboys (Olympic).
