No it's not. Shame on the apathy . The World nines will not be common knowledge due to no FTA coverage. A third of the possible audience is a disgrace for such a tournament hosted in Australia! Some of you don't agree that this is a major issue for the tournament and code!? That's apathy and ignorance rolled into one! All with rugby-league being the lesser for it.

The fact is an international nines tournament is not being aired on any of the numerous FTA tv channels. And sports like Womens AFL achieves FTA coverage? It's an embarrassment. I'm not privy to any monetary dealings. But this should have been on FTA TV.

Women’s AFL takes place over a year and lasts, well I don’t actually know how long it lasts but not an entire weekend. There’s no comparison to be made.

Well it looks like England are rather than GB so my guess is Wales will also as they’ve already qualified for the World Cup. Scotland and Ireland need to make sure WC qualification is their priority.

Scotland, Ireland and Italy all have WC qualifiers. Will USA and Cook Islands still have qualifiers on or will they play each other during the rep weekend? If not them, who? Malta, Serbia, Canada, Niue? My bet is Italy and Cook Islands are invited and turn up with teams full of Aussie based players that couldn't be bothered to travel for the qualifiers, while Jamaica is forgotten.

The only players who would potentially be effected for eligibility are Aussies and Kiwis who choose to play for England and that seems pretty unlikely to happen. Or some other combination between those three.
If an Aussie chose to play for an island or whatever there is no impact. Although you would think the governing bodies and coaches will want the players in camp and bonding, if people are going to jump around everywhere they may find themselves uninvited.
It’s hard to say who will be invited as they haven’t said. The fact it a a ‘world’ competition implies they will have some kind of worldwide representation or at least N/S hemispheres which is why I guessed wales would get an invite.

As for the format, and knowing that there will only be 28 matches (assuming that includes the womens games);

For the womens, a full round robin andthe final = 7 matches.

4 groups of 3 = 12 matches.

The first placed team from each pool goes into a 4 team knock out for the Cup. Semis + final = 3 matches.

The second placed team from each pool goes into a 4 team knock out for the Plate. Semis + final = 3 matches.

The third placed team from each pool goes into a 4 team knock out for the Bowl. Semis + final = 3 matches.

Total = 28 matches.

So NGBs who received invites from the Northern Hemisphere for the Nines were:

• England (RFL)
• Wales (WRL)
• France (FFRXIII)
• Lebanon (LRLF)
• USA (USA)

With Australia and New Zealand confirmed participants, it's not too difficult to guess the other invitees.

Personally I'm okay with the NH selection. Each of the nation's have domestic competitions and we will hopefully see domestic talent in the squads for the event.

Would have liked to have seen Jamaica, Canada and/or Serbia in the mix but with only 12 spots and the event in the Southern Hemisphere there was always going to be a Pacific flavour.
