Isee parrallels in the demise of the ESL with the demise of the Brisbane RL comp when the Amco Cup was introduced

Better players get cherry picked

How long until we get a request for Manchester to join the NRL ?

Dinosaurs who realise there is not enough competition or interest in anything like you have mentioned. Champions league? Really? That would be sooo good for RL.

Our sport has two good professional leagues and one is way ahead of the other and they are half a world apart but yeah we should really be trying to put together a champions league

I dare say Perth Red does not remember the 1997 Super League World Club Championship where it was SL Europe v SL Australasia. In the regular round, the European teams rarely cracked wins against the Australasian sides. It got worse when the comp entered its play-offs.

Of the 4 quarter finals, which saw Australasian teams play European teams, the Eurpoean teams lost all 4 games, with only 1 game being close (i.e. Hunter Mariners 22 def. Wigan Warriors 18) and the rest were cricket scores. Thus the semi-finals and final were all Australasian teams.

Whilst there have been some improvements in the game in Super League, they are still way behind the NRL. Having a "Champion's League" type comp would merely leave our game open to the scorn which the 1997 comp received as I dare say you'd wind up with similar results.

the point is it gives an opportunity to the supporters of the nrl premiers to watch their team play in a world club championship match. it's not going to hurt the sport having it in australia every second year, and i see it more than a "glorified trial" and i'm sure others do too. having the game played 2 weeks after the nrl grandfinal might make others see it as more significant than a "glorified trial" too

You've already cut the number of games by two thirds so I don't see how it's not going to hurt it.

The following article was just posted on the Sydney Morning Herald's website -

World Club Series 2017 likely to expand to include eight teams, games in Australia
Date: February 19, 2016 - 12:33PM

Next year's World Club Series is likely to be played in Australia and the UK, involving eight teams, according to comments made at the Golden Boot Award presentation to Johnathan Thurston.

Thurston formally became the first player to be crowned the rugby league world's best player on three occasions when was handed the trophy on Thursday night (local time) at Headingley.

He also received the award as Player of the Finals, which has now been dedicated to former Fairfax reporter Alan Clarkson, in recognition of his performance in last year's finals series.

"Ideally, it would be great to watch a game on a Friday night, get up Saturday morning and see another game in the same competition," NRL official Andrew Hill told the crowd in the Lewis Jones Suite.

"Then the same thing would happen on Saturday night and Sunday morning. That's the aim - eight teams with two games in each hemisphere."

It's understood the winner between the two competitions would be determined by one point being awarded for a victory and two points up for grabs in the main contest between the two champions, in Super League and NRL.

Super League general manager Blake Solly told the crowd that Wigan and Leeds had already indicated their interest in playing in Australia next year. "We love the idea," said Solly.

The World Club Series kicks off on Friday night with the unfancied Sydney Roosters playing St Helens. As per local rules, coach Trent Robinson has named just a 19-man squad.

"I think it's a bit more than a trial," said captain Jake Friend.

"It's an awesome concept and a big weekend. We want to play well and hopefully win but it's our first hit-out this year. It will be good to blow the cobwebs out and see how a few of our new combinations go together.

"Obviously we've lost a bit of talent but there's plenty of talent too and plenty of blokes who have been in the system for a long time.

"From a supporters' point of view, it would be great to see us come out and put a score on them.

"There's plenty of people doubting us but we haven't really bothered to listen or let it worry us."

HE World Club Series in 2017 is likely to be played in both Australia and the UK.
In a shake-up to the current format, Fairfax Media reports that the proposed changes were made at the Golden Boot Award presentation on Thursday night, which would see eight teams involved in the competition.
“Ideally, it would be great to watch a game on a Friday night, get up Saturday morning and see another game in the same competition,” NRL official Andrew Hill told the crowd after Johnathan Thurston was crowned rugby league world’s best player for the third time.
“Then the same thing would happen on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
“That’s the aim — eight teams with two games in each hemisphere.”

Super League general manager Blake Solly said he welcomes the change and told the crowd that Wigan and Leeds had already indicated their interest in heading to Australia next year.
“We love the idea,” said Solly.
Meanwhile the World Club Series kicks off on Friday night with the unfancied Sydney Roosters playing St Helens.
Fortunately, Trent Robinson and his squad have a secret weapon among their ranks, English recruit Joe Burgess, who has filled them in on how to handle the cold and what to expect from a sellout crowd at Langtree Park.
The former Wigan man, who looks set to nail down the right-wing spot at the Roosters after impressing during pre-season with his size and speed, has been playing the role of tour guide, weatherman and informant.

Lets just make it the wooden spoon teams face off against each other.

They've ruined the concept completely.

It was the first time it had been here for 20 years or something. 31k is a good crowd but if they were here every year or 2nd year I doubt the crowds would be very good at all. They also had SBW who is a big draw.

Do you actually think multiple teams would travel that distance multiple times in a year? or do you just want a glorified wcc that takes place after the season? It just isn't feasible with the distances involved.

So your in agreement if done right it has potential to be a big success? As for what would a successful WCC look like, well that would need to be worked out by the clubs, the SL&NRL and the marketing geniuses. Funny people say oh but it didn't work in 1997 or put forward a model that clearly wouldn't work. There are plenty of ways the comps could be restructured to make it work if the motivation was there. Plenty of examples of successful international club comps to look at and figure out which model would work best for RL. The challenge of the difference in quality between the SL and NRL, particularly when you move out of the top 4 SL teams would be the biggest hurdle short term. Long term maybe it would be the boost the UK game needs to grow and strengthen?

You don't even have a valid format in mind so no I don't think it could be a success at all. It will not happen after the season, we cant just ignore that. So at best it would be an expanded version of what we have now, does that really help UK RL very much more than the current WCC? I doubt it. If its in AUS it wouldn't be competitive and it would still just be a preseason tournament, and we all know preseason games are virtually meaningless outside getting an early indication of your side. I'd say the best you could hope for is initially it being a novelty and drawing nice crowds but imo that would wear off very quickly.

So the SL teams got slaughtered over the weekend, I don't see how bringing them out here to get flogged would help anyone.

I always look forward to these games, they are important to the uk for the growth of our sport. It is one of the only times rugby league gains any decent publicity over there. As a rugby league fan, we should encourage these competitions. The English clubs were ordinary this year, I think the talent is starting to spread out a bit more in super league resulting in s more even competition but less superstar players at the same club and without the depth that the NRL has, the top sides can't compete. They will improve!

Collectively,the result was Australia 118 England 28.

Occam's Razor regarding weekend's results indicate that going back to the normal format should be applied.

Occam's Razor regarding weekend's results indicate that going back to the normal format should be applied.

This trend began a year before this format when the Roosters thumped Wigan in February of 2014.
