Worst finals series in years?

I'm not taking anything away from the Tigers and congrats on the win, I expect to see plenty of new single mums at Campbelltown Centrelink in about nine months to collect the baby bonus.

Back to my point, not one game in this years final series had me glued to my seat, biting the fingernails like I have seen in previous years.

The 2003 series was a cracker followed by the best GF I have seen outside 89' but this years games were all duds with no close results or games that were in the balance coming into the last five minutes.

Brisbane v Melbourne was a high quality game but Tigers v Cows, Eels v Manly were one sided and Dragons v Sharks, albeit close, wasn't of any great quality.

Week 2: Brisbane v Tigers was ok but not great, Cows v Storm was poor

Week 3: Dragons v Tigers was good, Eels v Cows not so good

GF: Great spectacle but not the greatest game I've ever seen.

So yes, I agree it was a poor finals series that was saved by the success of the Tigers which at least captured the imagination a fair bit.

The best finals series I've seen was the 1997 ARL series. So many unbelievable games ...

I have to admit I am a pretty big fan of the cowboys and they got me going abit but I dont think that my adrenaline got pumped up once whatsoever.

I think it is the competition this year rather than just the finals series. Not saying boring but different. Very few nailbiters or cliff hanger games this season at all. The game is changing and clubs will compensate next year.

I feel this has been a watershed year for the game in many ways and the future looks bright

Poor effort??? Surely I'm entitled to my opinion as is everyone else and just because I thought the finals series was a dud it's a poor effort?

1998 was good opening series for the NRL as was 1999, but this year was extremely disappointing from where I sit.

1998 was very good. Some great games include

Bris vs parra at ANZ
Stg vs Dogs at kogragh
knights vs chooks at Newcastle
Knights vs dogs at SFS
Dogs vs Eels at SFS

I agree, Legend. And it wasnt just the finals series either. Over the last few years we've been treated to some great FNF blockbusters, but this year i couldnt think of one. Most of them were blow-outs.

Tigers, Cowboys and Eels thrashing the Dogs
Broncos and the Dragons thrashing the Roosters
Tigers thrashing Manly and Cronulla
Parra thrashing Brisbane and the Dragons
The Dragons smashing the Cowboys
The Broncos smashing Manly
and so on...

And coupled with the fact that i no longer watch Sunday football on 9 because of the excessive ads, its been a pretty ordinary year as far as league on Channell Nine goes.

It's because this year there were no standout teams. Every team was capable of defeating every other team in the competition. Alot of the teams that missed the 8 could very well have won the competition if they had made it.
There was never going to be any "Clash of the Titans", because there were no very superior teams.
As a result the finals were really no more intense than the regular season.

I would say it was good in that st george or parramatta didnt win and choked again.

but gamewise yes it was very poor, one of the worst final series in years.... it was only ever the excitement of what the result could potentially be that got me interested and then I would keep watching because at least seeing the losers get really cut would make me feel better about my teams crappy season.

Knights, Rabbitohs and Penrith were all in better form than the Cowboys at the end of Round 26.

I wouldnt say it was the worst final series, there were a few good contests in the finals. But yes it wasnt as good as everyone expected.

I cant really think of any finals series that was the worst. 2001 maybe where most of the games were one sided, but it wasnt too bad.

Someone mentioned 1997, how good was it, not only to see Gold Coast in the finals, but most of the games were decided in the last 10 minutes.

Also 1994 was the same, one game went into extra time, another one was decided by a field goal. Shame the GF was one sided.

The H & A season is over 26 rounds, not 8.

Every team, funnily enough, knows that before the start of the season.

It was a substandard finals series but the best team definately came through in the end. The cowboys only played 1 good game against the eels. The dragons were dissapointing in both games. Eels lol!
