WOW. CM Punk got a punt to the head from Orton so he couldn't compete in the match. Mike Adamle then lets Jericho into the match, and there is your new champion.

WWE Unforgiven Thoughts and Spoilers

Matt Hardy won the ECW Scramble Match. Good opener if not a little messy at stages. Hardy won with a Twist of Fate on The Miz 3 mins from full time and defended his title from there on.

Simply Priceless retained their Tag Titles following a Rhodes pinfall on JTG. These two tag teams seem like they're made for one another and watching their styles mesh is truly wonderful. Ending was a little anti-climatic but at the same time a nod to the old school of wrestling which felt poetic due to the Simply Priceless gimmick. Afa Jr. debuts post match and saves Simply Priceless from a Cryme Time beat down.

HBK defeated Chris Jericho after a referee stopped the match. No that's not a typo a referee actually stopped an unsanctioned match where apparantly they're given no control and can only declare the match over following a pinfall or submission. To be fair the match was good but at the same time dissapointing considering the quality we're used to from these two superstars. It had some decent spots and HBK put in another solid performance despite his injury and for that it was admirable but I felt it made Jericho and Cade look weak which I wasn't impressed with...at the time.

Triple H won the Smackdown Scramble Match. It was much better than the ECW Scramble and those last few minutes were truly exciting. The results may indicate Triple H dominated but each superstar (well maybe not MVP) starred at some point. The ending though was dissapointing. With 20 seconds left Hardy has the title and decides for whatever reason to Swanton Bomb Shelton Benjamin, instead of you know...defending his title. Jeff hits the bomb and of course hurts himself in the process. Triple H enters the ring finds a staggering MVP hits him with a Pedigree at which time Jeff recovers. Jeff spots Triple H but instead of breaking up the pin he decides the best course of action is to pin Shelton Benjamin. Like WTF Hardy?! What's that going to achieve with...2 seconds left? The finish just made Jeff look geniused and it would've been better off with Triple H pulling it out of the fire through an alternative method.

CM Punk's interview is interupted by an injured Randy Orton who gets in the champions face. Before CM Punk can make his point Simply Priceless with Afu Jr. attack the Straight Edge superstar and Orton puts the exclamation point with a punt to the side of the head. Kofi tried to save CM Punk but just ended up getting decimated as well.

Michelle McCool def. Maryse. I can't recall how, wasn't paying attention.

The Big Show protected Vickie from The Undertaker thus effectively turning himself heel. The segment was cringe worthy though and did no favors to either wrestler.

Chris Jericho won the World Heavyweight Scramble Match. Yes you read right! Jericho came in as Punks replacement despite suffering mulitple injuries through out the Michaels encounter and snuck a pin in the dying stages to win his 2nd (pffft stuff counting the WCW Title during the Alliance) Heavyweight Championship. The match wasn't as good as the others but I was happy with the finish. I must say though it leaves CM Punk in the Mysterio category as worst champion ever. The thing that gets me is Jericho suffers a 'hellacious' beat down from HBK that lasts a good ten minutes. CM Punk is attacked for 10 seconds and is unable to compete? Way to make Punk look weak...

Overall though I was fairly impressed with the PPV. I thought 3 Scramble Matches were over-kill but at the same time I'm pleased with the results and can't wait for what the WWE have in store for us this week!

I feel sorry for CM Punk. Going from Heavyweight Champion to an injured wrestlers bitch really doesn't cannot make oneself all that happy.

Though it is a long overdue title run for Y2J. Pity he is doing it as a super-heel.

I think comparing Punk's reign to Mysterio's is absolutely laughable. At least Punk has had a few strong showings in his reign despite sharing TV time with heavyweights like Cena and Batista. Mysterio had no such competition and still looked like crap.

And a program with a man who is, when in shape, arguably the #2 heel in the company isn't exactly going to kill his credibility, either.

Wow and you're usually the pessimist around here.

Honestly I thought Punk was always made to look second behind both Cena and Batista and his reign wasn't one of a true World Heavyweight Champion. I suppose we'll have to see how he comes accross in his feud against Orton but currently his reign has left him looking anything but a World Champion.

Of course he was. Cena and Batista are pretty much the two most over guys in the company right now - so they were always going to receive top billing. It's obvious that the WWE wants them to headline Mania together, and Punk was always going to just be the filler. But he hasn't been damaged by the run - he won a feud with JBL and has held his own against top guys after being little more than a glorified midcarder on ECW.

A feud with Orton, a multiple time champion, is a pretty big program for him to shift into.

Afa Jr, Randy Orton, Rhodes and Di Biase. I reckon they are onto a winner here for sure.

Has it been confirmed as Afa Jr? The one report I said claimed he looked too big to be Afa - but given the only other big Samoan lad they have (Kafu) isn't a second gen star, I guess it's a safe bet.

Punk got worked!

Anyway Orton looked pretty weak after his first title run so maybe they can save Punk still.

I still don't buy into Punk being a top guy there but I think thats because i've followed him since 2003 when I used to tape trade IWA:MS.. Its hard to see him go from wrestling in front of 32 people to 20, 000 and buy into it. I don't know why

Lets take a look at Punks reign shall we.

June
Wins the Heavyweight Title by cashing in the MitB. Faces JBL later in the night and requires the assistance of Cena and Cryme Time to win.

July
Feuds with Batista and looks to be in trouble before Kane interferes. Following the match Punk is Batista Bombed and is made to look like ahem...'Batista's b****'. Batista earns a rematch the next night on Raw and despite being attacked by Kane gives CM Punk a run for his money before interference is made.

August
CM Punk is then placed in a handicap match where he gets owned by JBL and Jericho. Faces and defeats JBL at Summer Slam in a very unconvincing manner. Following Summer Slam and in front of his home town CM Punk loses to Jericho in the main event.

September
Punk is beaten down for a total of 15 seconds and is ruled unfit to defend his title. Chris Jericho who had just gone through a hellacious match with Michaels takes his spot and ultimately wins effectively ending Punk's reign.

So for a champion that was using his underdog status to get over Punk really was made to look like as a dud as a World Champion. Will the reign accelerate Punks career? Possibly but in saying, his reign could've been better. MUCH better.

I would have absolutely no problem with Punk feuding with Orton. My problem is that they will be feuding by proxy for quite a while since Randy Orton isn't on the active list. And the people he will have to feud with (DiBiase Jr, Rhodes, Manu) aren't exactly top teir talent either in the pecking order of the company.

I agree with what you said about Mysterio's title reign, but the way the WWE took the belt off Punk makes him look weak. He can't go into a bout after a kick in the head, but Chris Jericho can win the title after being unable to defend himself in the Unsanctioned Match vs HBK? I have a feeling Punk wont look that strong against Jericho in his rematch in a fortnight on Raw.

I think he's been billed as Manu...I could be wrong however

In a shocking move, Chris Jericho ends up walking out of the Unforgiven pay per view with the World Heavyweight Championship.
Last Minute Addition
Those that paid to see Chris Jericho at Unforgiven did so to see him face off against Shawn Michaels.
They received an unexpected treat at the end of the night as the King of the World ended up walking away as the brand new World Heavyweight Champion.
Originally, WWE had advertised a championship scramble match involving CM Punk, Batista, Kane, Rey Mysterio, and JBL.
Since the company wanted to surprise the fans, they did a backstage segment where CM Punk was injured by Randy Orton and his new stable.
That enabled Raw general manager Mike Adamle to name a replacement in the match.
That fifth and final spot ended up going to Chris Jericho.
Monster Momentum
The decision to put the World Heavyweight Championship on Chris Jericho may have surprised most people, but it shouldn't have come as a complete shock.
When Chris Jericho returned to WWE after a 2 year hiatus, he had a little bit of momentum, but then that was sapped by lackluster feuds.
Once WWE started having Chris Jericho feuding with Shawn Michaels, he started picking up momentum.
With the storyline becoming extremely entertaining, Chris Jericho worked his way into becoming the top heel on the Raw brand.
Since he is the top heel on the brand, it makes all the sense in the world to put the title on him in hopes of capitalizing on his momentum.
Potential Feuds
Now that Chris Jericho is the World Heavyweight Champion, who will he feud with?
Obviously, he's going to have to eventually face CM Punk for the title, but for now the Straight Edge Superstar seems headed towards a feud with Randy Orton.
Since he feuded with Batista earlier in the year, another feud would make sense, especially if the World title is involved.
A feud that most wrestling fans have been wanting to see is the one between Chris Jericho and Rey Mysterio.
If WWE plays this right for the next few weeks, then they'll have themselves a Wrestlemania main event title match between Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels that fans would be begging to see.
Closing Thoughts
I said that WWE needed to create a buzz at Unforgiven to bring interest back to the product. They delivered.

You seem to forget that the 'kick to the head' has been used as an excuse to write far more established guys out before. It's been an excuse for guys like HBK and Cena not to compete - so why not CM Punk?
