LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Black Eyed Peas singer Will.i.am will make his feature acting debut in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," the "X-Men" spinoff starring Hugh Jackman.

Danny Huston, Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins also have joined the Fox project, and Ryan Reynolds is making a cameo. Gavin Hood ("Tsotsi") is directing.

"Wolverine," set 17 years before the "X-Men" movies, traces the origins of the popular mutant superhero.

Will.i.am, whose real name is William Adams, will play Wraith, a mutant with the power to turn himself translucent.

Huston, who most recently appeared in "30 Days of Night," is playing Stryker, the military general who subjected Wolverine to the experiment that laced his bones with an unbreakable metal called adamantium. Brian Cox played the character in "X2: X-Men United."

Kitsch, one of the stars of NBC's "Friday Night Lights," is playing Gambit, a Cajun thief whose powers include the manipulation of kinetic energy, which allows him to use card-throwing to deadly effect.

Collins ("The Number 23") will play as Kayla Silverfox, Wolverine's lover and a member of Team X, a superpowered covert ops team.

Reynolds, onscreen in "Definitely, Maybe," will appear as Deadpool, a wisecracking mercenary.

Liev Schreiber already has been cast as Victor Creed, a mutant with bestial superpowers who also is known as Sabretooth.

Production began this month in New Zealand before moving to Australia. A New Orleans shoot also is on the docket. Fox is releasing the film everywhere May 1, 2009.

YAY!

Aside from the questionable casting of Schrieber as Saber Tooth (who was played perfectly by Tyler Mane in the original) - I'm stoked with the casting. Terrific to see Deadpool and Gambit getting a look in finally!

They really dropped the ball in the third installment. I just hope this movie doesn't suck so much.

Yeah the last one was kind of throwing all their eggs in one basket in the hope that they made a big story but it just didn't wash with me either.

Looking forward to seeing Gambit finally.

I blame the change of director. Switching from Bryan Singer to Brett Ratner is like switching from Andrew Johns to Darrell Trindall in your halves. Ratner thinks special effects = instant success, while Singer was more focussed on the characters and their experience.

Thankfully, Ratner isn't attached to this.

Dominic Monaghan (from Lost) has been added to the cast as another member of Wolverine's Project X team - and Agent Zero has also been cast.

Good to see Silverfox in there, & of course Gambit. Bit sus about will.i.am. Wraith isn't a character I'm familiar with.

I expect to see a lot of tragedy in this one. I wonder if Sabretooth will did what he did to Silverfox what he did in the comics. (don't wanna give a potential spioler lol).

Will.I.Am shouldn't even be allowed to sing, let alone act!

I hope Wolvie busts the berserker moves out on him!

Jackman's said he's aiming for this to be a darker, R-rated film - so it's entirely possible. My feeling is they'll go most of the way, but perhaps leave the more graphic facet of the act out of things.

I'm not too worried about will.i.am being involved. He's got a decent look, and I'm sure they'll keep his acting to a minimum.

very well said mate
brett 'look at the box office' ratner made a absoloute mess of X3 glad he left Superman alone as he would of made even worse of a mess with that script he was working with

i wasnt too happy when singer left x3 i know jackman was very vocal about it but singer had always wanted to do a superman movie and got the chance to and did a excellent job but too bad he left 10 million dollars of deleted scenes out of the film which most of the plot was based on

but looking forward to wolverine i must say

If he acts like 1000X better than his music, he'll still be a sh*t actor.

John Wraith (codename Kestrel) was a part of the Weapon-X experiment, along with Sabretooth, Wolverine, Silver Fox, Maverick and Deadpool - all of whom are in the new Wolverine movie.

Beak (the hobbit from Lost) is a minor Marvel character that really doesnt deseve to feature in the movie (they couldve at least featured Alpha Force)

But bring on the Ragin' Cajun!!!

Well, this proved a bit of a let-down. Ironically, Schrieber (who I questioned in my original post back in 08) was probably the best thing about it.

The follow-up is due out this year and looks a bit darker as it goes down the very popular Japanese path of Wolverine's origin. Anybody keen to see this?

I'm hoping after First Class recovered some of the X-Men universe's gravitas, this will continue in that trend.

I enjoyed all the X-Men films in the main lineage (with 2 & 4 being outstanding), but the Wolverine spin-off was a dud. Not exactly awful, but...

Anyway, probably I will see it. Hoping for more Gambit, but seems unlikely.

Really, X-Men has been the only comic book franchise to consistently produce quality films. Sin City & the hit-&-miss Batman aside, I can think of no other genre in film more littered with glorified shit.

This one is more of a sequel to Last Stand than to Origins.

And this will be followed by Days of Future Past, which combines both original cast and First Class cast.

Is it really? I always thought the Japan stuff happened before the events of the first films.
