It sounds like Origin is going the same way as the top of the EPL. Only people with plenty of money or those willing to pay over the odds will be there. It's not as if the actual games are much to write home about either. Origin has become an example of hype over quality.

Origin 1 last year was one of the best games of football I have seen in a long time.

Origin has been consistently good for the most part.
Even with the 8-0 run Queensland had it was all reasonably close and high quality.

And it brings an intensity that normal internationals usually fail to reach.
The battles of attrition and tension origin can consistently build is immense.
2012 and 2013 were great advertisements for the concept and rugby league in general.

The closest intensity game to an origin was Kiwis v England 2013, but its a completely different atmosphere in origin.

All the whinging about price is completely manufactured DT hype.
Its a premier event, it demands a premier price.
Its a genuinely special event which you're lucky to go to if you can get tickets.
Its on the tele if you can't afford it and there's footy on during the week that is less than half the price if you feel the itch.

Have you actually been to a SOO game? I was at game one last year and it was probably the greatest game in the modern era. Great tries and great courage from the NSW team - what RL is all about.

May have so poor games in between but at its best nothing gets close.

Origin has jumped the shark.

The games may be good, but gee are they really as good as all the channel nein hype would have us believe?

If you tell people enough times that this is the best thing ever then youre more likely to believe it.

Personally for mine - its lost me.

I get more of a buzz out of watching international matches. The Kiwi v England games of recent years were light years ahead of origin in speed and attractiveness...

You have an emotional attachment to one of the teams and that probably clouds your view of the actual quality of the play.

The attrition and defense has been really unmatched outside origin.
The players are pushed to the limit and beyond and are willing to go that extra mile.

England v New Zealand was pure class, while Origin is a show of attrition and tit-for-tat.
The investment of players on both sides is jawdropping when it clicks, in recent years its been the Queensland spine vs NSW defence.
I remember one game where NSW held out 7 repeat sets, i've yet to see anything like it anywhere else.

It might recede a bit with the retirement of the QLD dynasty spine, but at the moment its still got legs imo.

This is awesome. The one last sanctuary we have from NRL and Origin talk (the international forum) has just been taken.

RIP.

I think it's your emotional attachment to England and your agenda to grow international RL that has clouded your judgment.

I hate SOO with a passion, I strongly dislike Queensland and I hate NSW with a passion that only a Canberran displays (of course this is in the sporting context). The only way I could become a fan of SOO is if it was to be expanded to include the ACT, which is almost certainly never going to happen.

But even I, a person who would like to see SOO fall into obscurity more then most, will freely admit that SOO consistently produces the highest quality of RL in the world.

Every now and again an international of similar quality to SOO will pop up (2013 RLWC Eng vs NZ semi comes to mind), and obviously not all SOO games are of the highest standards, but overall SOO is the format that produces the best quality of RL in the world the most consistently.

Rodney mate

I don't see SOO games having names attached to them after matches like Tests have over the last century. Example, Rorke's drift test.

And don't see the SOO sides being named after Aircraft Carriers (HMS Indomitable) that got the players out here to win against the odds (The Indomitables), plus I don't see the SOO sides nick named the invincibles and Unbeatables.

I do for International sides ;-)

There are plenty of other examples for all our International teams that have played in the top tier.

Swinton Massacre and so on.

It isn't surprising considering they are guaranteed to play each other three times a year and players are paid a fair whack of cash for playing.
