Your Best Three And Worst Three Gigs

Ok, I'm obviously still on a high after last night, so, with all the various music tastes on here (yes FOTM you too mate ) what are the best five gigs you've ever been to? (Really, the best five bands you've seen live, this could include a band at a festival)

5. The Living End (2008)
Honestly, they are just so much fun live, especially when you know the songs. Nothing like an upbeat night of rabid dancing attempts, for a cheap $35 (exactly the same it cost to get home after Cityrail buggered up) it was brilliant.
4. G3 (forgot the year)
If you're keen on guitar instrumentals, make sure you see this. The skill is amazing and the night is, as I've used this word before, just fun. Something new around each time, La Grange was the highlight (guitarists were Satriani, Petrucci and Vai I think).
3. Deep Purple And Status Quo (2007)
What a show! The lowlight was seeing Jimmy Barnes come out for Smoke On The Water, but what an upbeat night. Every song I could remember from my childhood (keen 70's kid most of my 1990's childhood) and it was amazing. Down Down was the major highlight.
2. Dream Theater (2008)
Perfect, three and a bit hours long and a hilarious error made by Petrucci at the end of it. Great setlist too.
1. Alice Cooper (2009)
Who else is going to be here? Hangings, chokings, zombies, guillotines, sword stabbings and and the old batch of brutal punishment adds something new to the show. Also how could you forget the music, two doses of School's Out was fantastic, but still nothing beat my personal favourite AC song, Ballad Of Dwight Fry. Nothing like singing "It Is My Body" in a fat suit too!

Some of the worst I can remember: Arch Enemy, Dragonforce, Screaming Jets, Rose Tattoo, Devildriver.

Best Three:
1. Muse - Big Day Out 2007
They epitomised what a rock and roll set should be. They had people jumping left right and centre and their energy made for a great performance.

2. Nine Inch Nails - Soundwave 2009
Not a big fan of their CD's, NIN's live show was phenominal with every member putting in a memorable effort. They were so good they forced their way into my top 3.

3. The Killers - 2007
Made it into my list purely for sentimental reasons. It was a great way to send my days as a high schooler out.

Worst Three:
1. Plain White T's - Soundwave 2008
Dull and as boring as ever. This is what happens when you allow girls to choose what bands to see.

2. My Chemical Romance - Big Day Out 2007
Tried promoting themselves as a bunch of tough nuts but only came off as pretencious wankers who carried a singer who couldn't hold a note.

3. Silverchair - Big Day Out 2008
Stuck to their new material and delusional persona's as pop gods. Felt like a slap to the face.

Best 5 - I'll try and go only once for a band, because there are numerous bands ive seen multiple times, however have to expand to 5 bands.
1 - Frenzal Rhomb @ Factory Theatre, January 2007
Best concert I've been to, and best of the 7 times I've seen this band. I was underage, somewhat drunk, and in their hour long set Frenzal rhomb played about 25 songs, absolutely brilliant night featuring some of my favourite, no barricade or security in front of the stage, got on stage and stage dived during kaan kaant and probably the most fun I've had. Hangover the next day was dreadful though.

2 - Dropkick Murphys @ Enmore Theatre - Excellent show, great setlist and one of my favourite bands, and a great live band. They were easily the best band at BDO this year as well

3 - The Living End @ Enmore Theatre September 2004 - Awesome setlist awesome show and before some of their last two albums music. Really good live band

4 - NOFX @ Luna Park - Fat Mike was on alot of drugs this night but was a pretty damn good show, and the Decline was played in full. Apparently one of their crappest shows on tour but was still good

5 - Bad Religion @ Hordern - 2 hours of Bad Religion, need I say more?

The worst???
I've seen some god awful support acts over the years. Goons of Doom were the worst band ever, Pepper were sh*t. Silverchair at BDO 2008 were just terrible, Getaway Plan at homebake 2008, most electronica is sh*thouse

Too many bests, worst one I've been to would either be Deez Nuts at Werribee... they were clearly drunk, didn't really want to be there and playing to about 200 people. Spent most the set insulting the crowd. Also the support acts were about as bad as humanly possible.

No other "worsts' really, the emos and posers that go to hardcore gigs and jump up and down like they're at a Veronicas concert bug me but you block it out pretty quickly.

I have been to very few concerts / shows, so namimg a worst list would be pretty hard for me.

My favourites are (in no particular order):
The Screaming Jets. My first proper concert. I'd been to their concert in Newcastle after the tickertape parade for the Knights winning the 1997 Grand Final, so this was my first concert I'd ever been to, but there was tens of thousands of people crammed into Civic Park that day and we were way back. This was more a fun, celebrating concert as opposed to a real concert, so this is why I claim this 2000 concert as my first proper one. It was a good show, promoting their 'Best Of' kinda cd, so it had all the crowds favourites in it. That being said, every time I have seen them since, they also always play the crowd favourites ..! - 3rd March 2000, Raffles Hotel (Perth)

The Bon Scott Celebration Concert. This was to raise money to build and erect a statue of Bon Scott in Fremantle, and had artists such as Rose Tattoo, Screaming Jets, The Angels (minus Doc Neeson), Dave Evans (original singer of AC/DC before Bon), Alan Lancaster (from Status Quo), and Mark Evans (who is a former bass player for AC/DC). All the major artists / bands played a set of their own songs, then the 2nd half of the show was the singers taking turns doing Bon Scott era AC/DC songs. Bon's high school pipeband joined in for 'It's A Long Way To The Top'. - February 2007 at Claremont Showgrounds, Perth

Alice Cooper - June/July ish 2005, Burswood Theatre, Perth

The Ultimate Rock Symphony. A whole heap of singers who sung their own songs plus those of the likes of The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, ect, with the backing of a symphony orchestra. Singers and musicians such as Roger Daltrey (The Who), Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company, and in recent years, out front of Queen), Billy Thorpe, Alice Cooper, Gary Brooker (Procal Harum), Peter Frampton, Simon Townshend, plus a couple more I think. Jimmy Barnes also attended the eastern states shows, but didn't come across to WA. At the time, I was not even 19, so didn't really appreciate the awesome amount of talent before me for quite a few years. I was disappointed throughout the whole show because the adverts had said they performed songs by Queen (among other bands), and they didn't even do one! The best part of the whole show -for me- was the last bit. This was where Billy Thorpe came on and literally demanded everyone get up out of their seats and dance around and have fun! He got the place going, and from memory ended the night with 'Most People I Know'. I don't have much memory of the concert for some reason, but I remember this. Dad tells me (he and I went) he believes Paul Rodgers was the best artist this particular night. I just have to take his word for it! - 23rd February 2000, Burswood Dome, Perth.

AC/DC - I haven't seen them yet, but I have my ticket for one of their Perth shows next year, so that should be a cracker!

---

I suppose the worst concert / show I have seen would probably have to be the Countdown Arena Spectacular 2, which was only about 2-3 years ago. The show itself was good, but the venue (Perth's Burswood Dome) is a sh*t venue with really bad acoustics. Unless you're right in front (like I was for the Ultimate Rock Symphony), it's just bad. Unfortunately, this was the case for this particular show (we were off to the right of stage, some 30m away). It was this show's first show in Australia, and like I said, the show itself wasn't bad, it was just really spoiled by a bad venue. I must admit to feeling annoyed by Joe Dolce too. He had one song to do (I suppose a one-hit-wonder would only have one song to do!), which should be a real crowd pleaser with a lot of crowd participation, however he piss-farted about with Molly Meldrum through most of the song and pretty much ruined his 3mins back in the spotlight!
