Your hypothetical side once we can't reach the finals

So, let's say it's Round 22 and we are officially mathematically unable to make the top 8.

A) would you continue to pick a side aimed solely at winning each individual match, or would you have one eye on 2011?

and B) If you would experiment a little, what side would you name?

Mine:

1. Gidley - not a halfback
2. Uate - no passing game equals not a modern fullback. Great running game can't compensate for a lack of link up play with outside backs. It's too important to attacking structure. Slater, Hayne, Stewart, Patten, Bowen, Boyd, Coote, Hohaia, Dugan... how many of those cannot throw a good pass and set up outside men?
3. Rogers - worth a look at least. Probably too slow and marking the game's best centres I don't know, but wouldn't it be nice to see some creative service provided to our wingers, especially Uate? A lot depends on if we've signed a halback. If we haven't then I think Rogers/Mullen should be playing as much as possible together in the halves. If they could actually fire consistently I'd be happy.
4. Williams - worth a look. I'm fed up with Sau.
5. McManus - with Vuna gone he's obviously next in line, so let's get his confidence back up now.
6. Mullen
7. Roberts - loads of potential. Can he convert it to first grade? Let's find out now.
8. Cross
9. De Gois
10. Simpson - only chance to earn another contract is to prove front row is a good fit.
11. Taia
12. Paterson
13. Hilder - not providing any impact at the moment. His best asset is his massive motor and I thought his form was much better last year in this role, moving to dummy half only every now and then.

14. Mata'utia - ease him in off the bench. Can cover a few positions and a good coach will find a way to use him effectively.
15. Mika - being groomed for a permanent bench spot next year.
16. Fa'aoso
17. Taufua
18. Edwards/Tovo/Tolar

Leaving out:

McDonnell - not a long term first grade fullback. Back up at best.
Mad Dog - love the guy and he walks into my best team, but I'm making the assumption that if we are out of the finals race he will probably be "injured", plus it's unlikely he will go another year.
Sau - needs a serious rocket. Try him at right centre in NSW Cup and tell him to develop a passing game or start playing every match like it's a Test for NZ.
Lulia - decent back up. Pretty much know what he can and can't do by now.
Naiqama - no explanation required I assume. Won't be here next year anyway.
Vuna - this is a bit harsh, he's been in great form. But it's with a view to next season.
Dureau - obviously.
Ciraldo - mediocre and defensively pretty soft and useless lately. Not the worst back-up going around, but nothing more.
Tolar - probably a bit harsh considering he's contracted and will almost certainly be a part of the first grade squad for the next few years.
Ndaira - no point bothering with him

Was thinking of coming in here and saying "what a pointless negative thread" but this hypothetical post of yours is pretty good! :)

Just on Ciraldo - he makes more tackles than just about anyone, and really doesn't miss too many given how many ones he attempts. He's no Simpson, but certainly ok enough.

Williams seemed to have a fairly good game on the Centurions game that was televised last week too - hope he seriously comes into consideration if Sau keeps up his nothing form of late.

Yeah it's not supposed to be negative mate. Just want to see what people WOULD do if it came to that...

The guys i'd like to see get a run in firstgrade by the end of the season are Edwards, Williams, Kev Naiquama, Tetevano, Mata'utia and maybe Lucas Miller if his legs are good enough for him to play 50 minutes.

A long shot would be Matt Croker.

I wouldn't be going too stupid with the line up, but would certainly hope to blood Peter MataUtia and Tyrone Roberts.

Pete probably on Vuna's wing ( or as a Ben Barba impact player off the bench ) and Roberts starting alongside Mullen in the halves.

I'd be making sure Joel Edwards was getting a run for at least half the game, ditto Mika ( and encouraging to play bigger minutes ).

I'd be leaving out Alomai at this stage until he shows he is fit enough to keep up with the speed of a NYC game. Talent isn't his problem, fitness is, and he isn't anywhere near ready for first grade on that alone.

I know there's a few people around here who blow over game day statistics and stuff ( like those of Ciraldo or Tolar ), but just because stats look good on a page doesn't mean that they were quality. A bloke can make 35 tackles where they lose the ruck everytime, or make 35 tackles and have 20+ dominant ones.

There are lies, damn lies and statistics, and we have some very ordinary footballers out there who ' stat wise ' come across way better than they really are.

I honestly don't remember any game this season, when everyone has been fit enough to play their correct position and not cover for anyone, and it seems it's getting worst. Until all regulars are fit, it's hard to pick form. Most people are back filling positions. If things don't get better soon the Spoon is there for the taking.

Guys, as good an idea it is, and god knows we could do with salvaging something from this year.

Simply, it won't happen, don't forget that Stone is fighting for his professional life as well.

If things don't improve markedly, he's going to be under more pressure than the players and that will make him even more risk adverse.

For the record, I'd like to see:

Williams,
Roberts,
Pete,
Edwards

and more Mika, to see whether he's got it.

McManus needs an extended run to see whether he's back to his best and whether his performance was class or good form.

Years not over yet Nuffy - I think you need to read the first post again ;-)

Mate, I read the post but I think Stone will want as many wins as possible and won't blood players just because the season is shot.

He's coaching for his career right now, he's not a high profile former player with a lot of NRL cred, he's likely got the balance of the year to convince people he knows what he's doing.

If things turn to custard, he's going to get more risk adverse, not less.

That said, I'd love to see some of the young blokes get a run.

you make some great points, however i disagree with the bold.

people on here keeping saying uate can't pass. he may not be able to, but wing doesnt exactly give you opportunites to pass. Everytime he has had the opportunity to pass he has hit his man on the chest. passing games can be developed. i wouldnt play him at fullback just yet, give him the pre-season training at fullback, play him at fullback in the trials, start him on the wing in fg for the first 6 rounds, provided he is still playing good give him the no. 1 jersey.

as for rogers i agree about giving him a spot in the centres, thats where i see his future is. he is plenty quick enough is all i disagree with. has a great step, and a good passing game, with a decent short kicking game, very sound defense.

other than that agree with everything you said. this would be mine

1.Mcdonell
2.Uate
3.Rogers
4.Williams
5.Kaquima
6.Mullen
7.Gidley
8.Cross
9.De Gois
10.Faaso
11.Patterson
12.Taia
13.Cook

14.Roberts
15.Mika
16.Simpson
17.Tolar

hopefully turn that side mid way into the 2011 season

1.Uate
2.Kaquima
3.Gasnier
4.Sau (in form and passing)
5.Nulla winger (whats his name again?)
6.Mullen
7.Kidley
8.Cross
9.De Gois
10.Simpson
11.Taia
12.Patterson
13.Taufua

14.Cook
15.Mika
16.Faaso
17.Roberts
